They're apparently hated. Those and the Altimas the NYPD gets. My brother was telling me they beat the shit out of them when they get assigned them because they're beyond uncomfortable.

It saves the taxpayers money.

Cops patrolling in heavy city traffic don't need a V8.

Personally, I don't want a hybrid, but for all the slow speed patrolling, etc, I bet those work just fine.

Now, a cop in a more rural setting needs something with some get up and go, but for a big city, not so much.

I can see using them in big cities where traffic congestion is the norm but not so much in rural areas.

someone mentioned lack of comfort if that is true then the Prius should not be an option, LEOs spend long hours in their patrol cars comfort should be priority one IMO.

Fuck that I want my government wasting as much money as possible on gas for the meter maids as possible. Sizing a vehicle for it's intended use is completely stupid and shows how far our government has fallen. We all drive V-8 SUVs for a reason and so should government.

Neither of those are patrol units. For patrol, it would be a pathetic excuse for a car.

Now the crime scene unit? Seems like it would be pretty pathetic there, too. The crime scene guys I know have Suburbans or full-size trucks and getting everything that they use for scenes into those things is still a bit of trickery.

In both cases presented, it gives the agency a chance to "green" a portion of the fleet without affecting the patrol division.

Unfortunately we are looking at greening the patrol divisions fleet by going to propane. I am not a fan of the concept.

THe first one, I can understand; Berkley is a cesspool of politically correct, tree-hugging, hippie Communists.

The scond one is NYPD Traffic enforcement - overglorified "Meter Maids", so I guess i can understand as well, since it seems, they got rid of their little funky looking trikes and got something with 4 wheels and a more comfortable seat.

Meh! Give me my Hemi powered Charger and we are good to go...

We have hybrid ford escapes for peremeter patrol vehicles. They are biggest peices of shit ever. Everyone hates em the break left and fuckin right. The brass has decided to replace them, with MORE escape hyrbids. Ugh

The city I live in uses hybrids for the building department and other non-emergency functions. Makes sense to me, they are just putting around town. Its not like they need a 400hp Crown Vic for building inspections.

My understanding is that they use horses to give them better visibility. Sitting on horseback they can see over crowds. And I'd imagine it's easier to move through a crowd on a big animal.

I've seen an unmarked police Escape Hybrid down here. It belongs to a police department in a city with a lot of rich residents, so the Escape isn't chasing down gangbangers and murderers. Looked to me like it was mostly a traffic unit.
