Pre-runners are starting to go 4wd, as it's entirely possible to get 15"+ of wheel travel out of a Ranger front end and retain driven front axles.

As a piece of advice - the steering rack on Rangers and Explorers sucks. So do the incredibly weak inner tie rods.
Replace the tie-rods with a good dual-shear/heim-joint set up, and buy a rack with a lifetime warranty. You'll be using it.
