[ARCHIVED THREAD] - How much can they shield human from radiation? What about the fire fighters at nuke plant?

I heard on radio that the fire fighters currently pumping sea water and putting out fire at the Fukushima nuclear plant went in there knowing they would be exposed to lethal dose of radiation. How much lead would it take to protect humans from such radiation leak? or is that just no way to protect anyone from the radiation? I thought the modern AFVs were all NBC capable?
