Been slowly increasing my Afrika Corps mobilized infantry stock. Towed 37MM with half tracks (so crucify me if I don't use the proper designation).

Those half been running from Tamiya about $8 for the cannons and $18 for the half tracks.

Was in the store yesterday for something else and glanced, since I have plenty now as it is, at them. Cannons are now $18 and halftracks are now $77.

Glad I bought when I did. The only thing I can guess is that what I was buying was an older model version that they wanted to clear out. I don't think it was the cost of oil for such a jump in price since Tamiya has never really known to be cheap and those before prices were really under cost compared to other Tamiya models.

Thoughts?

Yeah models have gotten very expensive. I think the quality has gone up on some of  them, but many are the same old molds in new boxes.

Adults can pay for a more expensive hobby, but it has got to be tough on a kid to come up with 20-30 dollars for even a basic model.

I was just thinking the other day that I hadn't built a model since I was a kid. I almost stopped into Hobbytown the other day to snag one, for fun. It's a shame they've gotten so pricey.

Yes, I don't think I've built any since 1989, and probably not since 1984 when I did a Mk III and Mk IV, a half track, armored car, and an Opel truck with flak 20....and I've been dreaming of increasing that "unit" for decades. Those are still around me, somewhat the worse for wear but repairable, having followed me around for years.

Isn't that the equation, though. Have the money.....but not the time.

Afraid not and as it stands now, it looks something more like the day after the battle was lost, hatches blown, accessories and MG's detached, soldiers broken pieces on the ground.

This is the gun (think I said above a 37 cm, sorry) that I've bought up:

Think I tried building one for my first halftrack

decades ago, but it didn't turn out well.

As it is, the above is the types I've been buying up but I have a few versions sitting around, one built, one partially built......that was something of a disaster because the treads were piece by piece plastic to be assembled, and maybe some from years ago unbuilt (more on those later).

Think I built the IV

as a long barrel

and the III

with a short barrel......may have them confused.

The armored car is this one: (this is not my model)

The Opel truck with the flak 20 didn't turn out well, it was the poor woman's attempt to create something like this,

(again, not my model)
to add some more firepower to the column.

The unbuilts include an Airwolf, a Walker Bulldog

an F-105G Wild Weasel, an MBB-105 that I was planning to do with a Marine TOW team for an insertion.......just never got around for it.

They sit, waiting, in a closet or two.

I have a hard time spending that kind of money for 1/18 scale assembled stuff, let alone smaller scale unassembled.

I like it, but not that much.

Some repaints:

My North African contingent:

PaK40 w/ crew:

Unfinished attempt to turn a Sdkfz 251 Ausf D into an Ausf C:

Poor attempt at weathering:

My North Africa armor:

I also have a 1/18 scale 88mm Flak that I negelected to photograph.

When these were available in Walmart, the PaK (and most vehicles not including tanks) went for $25. The Panzer IVs were RC once upon a time and went for ~$40 IIRC. Troops were $5 each. Got a good number on clearance.

Whoops. Almost forgot the aircraft.

Fun builds, but nothing compared to their newer kits, which are phenomenal.

While the models have increased in price, so have the quality of the kits. The overall mold design and details are lightyears beyond what they were in the early 80s with a few exceptions.  The mold lines are crisper and the fit on most requires little to no gap filling.  Now throw in the mutimedia parts such as metal/photo-etch/resin  and super high quality decals and you have a expensive from the box kit.  I remember years ago if you wanted to build a model to the same as today's average kit, you would have to spend just as much on after-market parts and decals.

I think the industry has done itself in by this as we now have a generation of kids who will never get into the hobby because who really wants to spend $50 for your 5 year old to build a model airplane.

When oil was at it's peak a couple years back, models jumped way up in price, and haven't come back down to adjust for the decrease in the price of petroleum, not to mention, Tamiya and Hasegawa are absurdly expensive anyways, and unfortunately there are limited choices for certain subjects, in regards to other manuf.

True enough but as with most things, there's an end problem as well as problems up front. Where to put them, once done? When I first got out of the Navy, I didn't have much, and could put them on top of my book shelf, first at mid level then at high level. There were moments when a cat might get up there and run licky split the opposite of the coloum direction as I'm saying "No!" and firing a squirt gun.

Sigh.....that was years ago. Now, my world has the shelves stacked to the ceiling with books and things and currently, there is no place to make a coloum........or a tank screen ambush. I have thought about getting some pine and making "shelves" like cross beams at near ceiling level. It's workable, take a little time, but also, really puts them out of appreciable view, close up, unless one sticks their head up there.

That an interesting....and probably an unpleasantly accurate appraisal.

What do you think we might be losing because of that? What does building models give us? On one side, I'd say the ability to picture, dream, and create. To have something that we can live in another world with. It might also teach us how to follow detailed directions, perhaps even to the point that we can write our own (instead, we get stuck with those who can't write). It might also have something to do with my work in deception since I have an apprection of how to make representations of what people expect, but that's just a quick guess.

Was in Hobby Lobby yesterday looking for stencils, and I always drop by the model section to see what they have.  A few Tamiya kits, in particular a King Tiger and a Panther.  I think they were about 40 bucks each.  I have been out of model building for a good while, so it was kinda surprising.

Also saw a Revell kit of the USS Missouri, I forget the scale, but it was a pretty long box, so I imagine the model will be a couple feet long, maybe more.  Sticker shock, though....$99.95.

Would love to be able to get back into it, but between my guns, a Jeep CJ and now a Deuce and a half, I don't think I can afford any more hobbies.

As I remember it, way back when the prices skyrocketed in the 70's I was told, or somehow assumed, that since the plastic industry was dominated by dino oil at the time, oil prices drove model prices...

This may not be true, but it seemed logical.

I very much enjoyed the hobby and have had thoughts on getting back into it. I still have my old air brushes, compressor and most of my tools.

I used to visit Valley Plaza hobby shop in North Hollywood, Cali and gaze at the exhibition quality models in the big windows. I got into the figurines and 1/72 scale armor kits back then too.

Do you guys buy most of your kits online, and could you post some good links to your favorite online dealers?

I haven't built a model since maybe 1979 or 80. Back then a Tamiya kit was a high dollar kit. They were the best, most realistic, most detailed. I don't know if that is still the case, but when you want the best, you pay a high price. Revell or Monogram kits were cheap and you needed real skill to make them look good.

Did you go into Hobbytown, OP??

I recently got back into modeling (1/48 WWII aircraft). There are a couple of hobby shops as well as Hobby Lobby close by. The model prices were pretty close to where they were when I was a kid in the late 80's early 90's, even for Tamiya. However, I went into Hobbytown the other day for the first time and the prices were extremely high. I don't know if it was markup, rarity or what but they looked some 2-3 times higher than similar models at my usual stops.

I bought my first model in 20ish years a couple of months ago. A Tamiya 1/48 F-51 (P-51 with different markings, confirmed) for 15.00.

ETA: Now some of the rare Hasegawa kits can be pricey.

I wonder about the "weathering". Could dropping the parts in a case tumbler produce a realistic effect?

That's an interesting idea, but I have no idea if it would work. My only attempt was on the anti-tank gun. I decided to leave well enough alone after that.

Those that can weather are artists in my opinion.

My only attempt at painting was miniature lead figurines. I did some "washes" and dry brushing, and that produced some cool effects. For example, black primer and a silver dry brush makes a pretty neat looking gun metal effect on miniature rifles.
