I was just thinking the other day that I hadn't built a model since I was a kid. I almost stopped into Hobbytown the other day to snag one, for fun.

Oddly enough, I did the same thing.

I thought damn, I should put this OCD to good use.

Too many memories in this thread...Warhammer, Tamiya kits...damn. I was just checking out prices on HLJ the other day, got an itch to build another Panzer I or II.

That's the main reason I got out of it..............too expensive

Well, it seems that people on this list partake in expensive hobbies, one way or another, doesn't it?

My father briefly owned a hobby shop.  I used to go to his supplier, now defunct, and buy myself stuff, then pay him for them.  (MUCH nicer buying wholesale).  Verlinden's resin kits were awesome, the M114 with the Vulcan gun (air defense version) was a GREAT kit, with lots of photo-etched brass parts.  I gave that to a friend as a going away gift.

The Hanomag half-track was always one of my favorites.  Tamiya has one version with the Panzergrenadiers exiting, jumping over the side, etc.  Sweet kit.

AFV Club has some nice kits, too.  Even the German division of Revell had some sweet Bundeswehr (modern) kits, like the Fuchs 6-wheel transport.

My current project is from a British war gaming company called "Games Workshop".  The "Reaver Titan" stands about 18" tall, and at the conversion rate the day I bought it, came to about $750.  I figure at the rate I build (SLOW), I'm looking at about a year to complete it.  Now they sell the body only, you select the arms and carapace weapon station.  Price seems to have come down, I might have to buy another one...

Here's it's page in the catalog...

I've collected Warhammer stuff for almost 15 years now (sporadically, and not in massive quantities), and I certainly know how models can drain the old wallet!

I feel your pain.  With the exchange rate, they're rather spendy over here.  I've got a LOAD of Space Marines, and the Forge World stuff is killing me, but I love them.  Death Korps of Krieg!!

With weathering, a little goes a long way.

On airplanes, I used water soluble ink on the panel lines - after you hit the model with a gloss coat so you can wipe off the excess and then a dull coat afterwards to seal it.

The important thing is to simulate depth, that's where the realism comes from.

EBay - you will be amazed at some of the deals you can get on models there.

If you want more than the ones listed above shoot me an IM and I can empty my bookmarked folder. I have TONS of sites with tips, tricks, reviews, etc. The hobby is very big and well represented on the internet.

Does anyone produce scale models of firearms? I would love to build a 1/4 scale M-14

When I was stationed on Okinawa in 1980 I found 1:1 scale plastic firearm kits being sold on the local economy. I bought & built a S&W Mod 29 6-1/2", a Broomhandle Mauser and a 1873 Colt SAA. Nice models, I wish I could remember the manufacturer. They were in a black box with gold logo.

Missinglynx.com is an excellent source for armor models and related ground equipment. I use them often for reference.

I used to enjoy model building as well, bu the sticker shock (as others here posted) for even a 'cheap' kit made me blanch.

I'll stick to other ways of wasting money.

I've been thinking about assembling airplane models lately...don't know why.  Used to do them as a kid.  Where are these new "better" kits at?  We have a "Hobby Lobby" here with stuff like that - but the last time I was in there, it looked like they had the same models I remembered as a kid.

This may be a dumb question, but do you airbrush instead of the "brush on" paints I remember when I was a kid?  I don't know how you'd get the textures on some of the kits I've seen otherwise.

Even the figures are getting really expensive......kits like these are now going for 30 to 80 bucks.
