I am looking to get my first Glock, and I am not sure which caliber I want.
I already have Sigs in .40 S&W, but I also have a MAC-11 in 9mm, so I have both calibers on hand. I am more concerned about ergonomics and accuracy rather than the "stopping power argument" that could go on forever  Thanks!! |

The only Glock I'd trust would be one in 9mm.

Both the 40 and 9 are built on the same frame so gripwise they are identical. If you get a glock in 40, you could get an aftermarket 9 mm barrel too. That way you could shoot both from one gun.

Not really, he would have designed it for whatever caliber the Austrian Military was looking for, it just happen to be the 9mm. As stated, get the 40 and a 9mm converision barrel. Then if you want another caliber, just pick up a 357SIG barrel, 3 calibers 1 Glock. |

It is the most efficient round, balancing size of the round with mag capacity. 50 gazzillion police departements can't be wrong!

See if you can find a range that rents firearms and try them both. You can't go wrong with either.
ETA: Since the ergonomics question was answered (they are the same), that leaves accuracy as your chief concern. I would go with 9mm - given the softer recoil. |

What's the intended purpose?
Ergonomics: Glock 40's and 9mm's are virtually identical. Accuracy: Potato, Pot Tot O My IDPA Gun is a 17, (no recoil per se) My duty gun is a 22 Essentially the same frame. the 9mm is so darn cheap to shoot. You can buy Blazer for next to nothing, or winchester white box for nothing + $0.01 . I reload on a Dillon 550 and It's dirt cheap as well. You already know that though. I would buy my (first) glock in 9mm. However if you are looking for strictly a CCW gun. Look at the Glock 30. in 45ACP |

If you're looking at the 19...the Glock 23 is the same frame. If recoil bothers you...get the 23C. That will take care of it.

Borrow a 9mm and a .40.
Go shoot Steel Plates. Notice how the 9mm doesn't knock em down unless it's a perfect top hit on a plate? That should tell you which one to shoot. The .40 knocks em down if you hit em.... DOH! |

Now, now... I wouldn't go THAT far. But...
+1 After many years and many failed attempts, I recently finished whittling my full-sized semi-autos down to only 9mm and .45ACP & have only made one transgression since...
Or .45ACP. Or .45GAP (the aforementioned one transgression  ).As to the author's original question, 9mm IMHO.

Why would you want a pistol in 9mm if you had the option for .40? Bigger bullet, high velocity, flat trajectory--nuff said.

Lots of reasons not to go with a .40....... Most have less velocity than a 9mm Less capacity than a 9mm More expensive than a 9mm More recoil than a 9mm Slower followup shots than a 9mm Higher pressure than a 9mm Less room for bullet setback than a 9mm No more accurate than a 9mm And the list goes on. |

If the weapon is going to be used for steel plate shooting then the .40 would be better than the 9mm but for self defense a 9mm will get the job done just fine. I am sure the attacker will change his mind after two to the chest regardless of the caliber.

I am a big fan of the 45 ACP for self preservation so my CCW piece is a Glock 30... just the same, I also have a M11/9 as well as a UZI, M10/9, and AR-15 so 9mm ammo is something I like to stockpile and nothing goes with a stockpile of 9mm ammo better then a Glock 17!
I don't consider the Glock 17 to be a CCW piece but if the SHTF I would have no concerns about having the Glock 17 with a couple 19 and 33-rd mags with me... It is also my Home Defense gun these days as well..

The problem is I want a light and my Glock 30 or Glock 21 doesn't have a light rail... I am working to sell my Glock 21 as I want to later upgrade to a 3rd Gen Glock 21 with the light rail so this light as shown above can be mounted to it... Just one step at a time... I would prefer a 45 ACP Glock 21 with the light/laser for home defense over the G-17 but the G-17 with the light/laser is better then a Glock 21 or 30 without the light IMHO! Now, with that said... I do like the firepower the 9mm brings with a 19-rd mag and with the longer barrel of the full sized G-17 it will get the job done if I need it... I also have the Glock 30, Glock 21, 12-gauge loaded with #4 Buck and an AK with four loaded 30-rd mags in the bedroom too.... I am just still a little paranoid about home invasions anymore..... !!! I was simply answering the question of 9mm vs 40 and he already has 40 cal Sigs and while I like my Glocks I will never say a Glock is a better made gun then a Sig

I bought a Glock 19 (9mm) back in 1998 and wouldn’t give it up for the world. I love it. About two months ago I purchased a Glock 22 (.40), but have yet to shoot it. Anyone have a model 22?

Ive got a model 17 9mm, but I carry a model 21 .45 for duty

Not true. Both the 9mm and the 40 S&W typically have pressure in the 32000 to 34000 psi range. According to Speer reloading manual, 9mm loads that normally produce a chamber pressure of 28000 psi skyrocketed to 62000 psi with just .030" bullet setback.
Irrelevant.
Maybe.  BTW, I'm partial to the .45ACP and the G30. |

Hear, hear! I have a relative in the Border Patrol, and they give these guys tons of practice ammo. They're currently using Beretta's in .40 - double action only! Though I heard they would soon be replaced by H&K pistols. |

IMHO stick with military calibers. 9mm and .45ACP have been around about a 100 years and because they are military calibers there is lots and lots of surplus. My two carry guns are G19 & G30

I carry a G22 for my primary and a G23 for my back-up. Most of the officers here at LVPD carry the .40 and some the 45. I don't know of any that carry the 9mm. Maybe off duty?? But I live in Sin City .
