Looking at a 06 GT0 manual, 23000 miles.  Its very clean from what I can tell.  No leaks, engine clean, etc.  Could someone run a carfax report for me on it.  If so please respond in this post or IM me. Any other info I might need to know would be appreciated.   I have to make a decision by tomorrow.

Thanks

is this a dealer or private owner?

how many owners?

does it look like it had been modded? This means it was ridden hard.

I am not a GTO man, but I have been told by others they have very weak rear ends.

Well atleast if you get it in a few months you can make posts and agreeing with me about all the problems.  I love company.

Try and have a dealer run the records too, might can find how many times it has been in for what GM calls "service"

Carfax is just one tool.  Explore ALL to include a full physical inspection by a professional paint guy who's job is TO POINT out what's wrong with the car.  Good luck, I think GTO's are one of the last great ones...

I'm going to share my all-time favorite TSB, which apllies to the car you're going to look at.

Taxman will appreciate me.

Apparently, noone has figured out what this means:
The back of the engine block is porous, and they want you to smear RTV silicone on it to fix it.
FWIW, if I had a tech do that, I'd fire them.

Condition

Some customers may comment on an engine oil leak.

Cause

Upon initial diagnosis, it may be determined that the leak is coming from the rear cover gasket. This condition may be caused by engine block porosity on the sealing surface. This issue pertains to aluminum block applications only.

Correction

Follow the steps for Oil Leak Diagnosis in SI to determine the source of the leak. If the leak has been diagnosed as coming from the engine rear cover assembly, refer to Engine Rear Cover Replacement in SI and remove the engine rear cover assembly. Inspect for engine block porosity where the engine rear cover mates to the engine block. If porosity is found anywhere on the sealing surface, use the following procedure to apply RTV to repair the engine block porosity. Refer to the illustration below.

Clean any residual oil from the block and cover before applying the sealant in the next step.

Wipe a small amount of RTV, P/N 12378521 (in Canada, use P/N 88901148), onto the surface using a plastic scraper to fill the porosity.

Remove any excess RTV material, especially from inside the high pressure oil passage. Refer to # 1 in the above illustration. The joint may be closed immediately after applying the RTV. Total joint time after the RTV has been applied must be under 20 minutes.

Refer to Engine Rear Cover Replacement in SI and follow the tightening specifications and sequence.

Reinstall the engine rear cover using a new gasket and a new crankshaft rear main seal. Refer to Engine Rear Cover Replacement in SI.

Check the inside of the tires to check if they are rubbing on the struts.  My friends did, but he fixed that with Pedders suspension.

Define common.

Customer service from them is what really pushed me over the edge.  Refusal to look at the car, accused of being "childish" by a dealer after I call corporate, accused of lieing.  Only just over 100 calls to GM warranty support (which is in India), before I gave up, some of these were due to a dealer refusing to speak with me directly.

Nearly all my vacation and sicktime for 2006 was used trying to get the car looked at by multiple dealers, when I didnt have time to take off work I had someone else take it in for me.

Everything on the car looks fine.  I know some are talking about a strut problems, but how do I check for that?

Thanks

Bill3508

Mine had, overheating problems, problems going into gear/staying in gear, stereo problems, rubber stripping¿ coming off, the strut problem, electronic demons, problems with speedometer freaking out, major problsm with staying in a line and shaking.  Also paint quality was very poor and the finish liked to come off the seats abit.  I know thats a fun list to check for.

I know Im missing something Im running at 50% today.

Not very common

Define common.

Customer service from them is what really pushed me over the edge.  Refusal to look at the car, accused of being "childish" by a dealer after I call corporate, accused of lieing.  Only just over 100 calls to GM warranty support (which is in India), before I gave up, some of these were due to a dealer refusing to speak with me directly.

Nearly all my vacation and sicktime for 2006 was used trying to get the car looked at by multiple dealers, when I didnt have time to take off work I had someone else take it in for me.

Not common, aka i have never seen one with all those problems.  I know atleast 20 gto owners and have never seen the problems.  One works for the local pontiac dealership, so warrenty work is a awesome.  Fuel line problem is because some of the frc run the rubber line, just need to trim part of the frc(fuel rail cover)

btw, i have a 2000 z28, so i know all about ls1's and ls2's

they are awesome and very reliable, easy to mod and tune

I'm kind of in a position of what the hell to buy.  I want some kind of sports car, American V8, but I'm not real fond of Mustangs or Ford in general.  The Camaro will be out in Feb-March 09 but I don't know if I will be able to afford one.  There is really nothing worth a crap out there as far as a true sports car.

Not American.
German, Japanese, English, Italian, sure.

Myself? I'd buy a 2003 M3 for that kind of money.

Mod in order to make it run right seems common with them, yes asinine.

My dealings with 4 dealers left me wanting to inflict grave bodily harm after a few months.

Mine had all of there, but I got rid it, got a Tacoma now which has twice the miles and none of the issues.  Only Tacoma "issue" was a low spare tire which the dealership topped off for me for free, they didnt insult me either.

My only problem with the Fuel line was that mine didnt have that, and didnt burn.

This is where I was, I got the GTO since it was about the only thing I found.  I regret it. alot.

Id either wait (not for a GM product though) or look at something like an M3.  Can always step back and think if you will use it enough to justify it as well, sometimes that money could be better used elsewhere.

You'll think I'm crazy then because I'm trading a 06 Toyota  4Runner on the GTO.  I've never had a sports car of any kind.  I've always driven truck/suv's and I'm tired of it.

But the dealer told me there were NO TSBs, yes its flawless, beyond perfect.  They didnt want to accept any of the TSBs I had gotten from GM over the phone and claimed to have never heard of any of my issues.

I got rid of it, it was borderline undriveable when I did.  I really wanted to take and have it crushed/cubed for scrap but it would have been an larger money loss.

If I had to keep it Id shoot it, burn it, cut it into small pieces aferwards, make nice metal points from them, then jam them into a few service managers hearts.

if you were close i'd let you drive mine.

i'm tired of the bitching about these cars because 99% of it is armchair assholes that somehow think that because it doesn't look fast it isn't.  i've addressed every one of taxman's bitches and every one of them had it's own TSB that should have been fixed by the dealer.  it sucks when you get a first year vehicle and get every damned glitch there was but it happens.  a shitty dealer does not = a shitty car.

some '06s had leaky front struts.  monroe made a batch using the wrong oil and some people got fucked.  i was one of them.  if you put a finger down in the cup you can feel whether or not there is oil in there.  my car was in this batch and did leak.  i took it to my dealer who told me they'd replace the one but not the other one.  instead of dealership shopping i just told them to go fuck themselves and redid my front suspension for performance since i was going to do it eventually anyway.

this car is completely capable of high 12s, low 13s from the factory and is comfortable as hell.  test drive the car and it will make the decision for you.

the only bitches i have about this car are as follows:

1.  the 6 speeds have an indirect shifter, it NEEDS to be replaced if you ever decide to drive the car in a spirited manner.  stock shifter sucks.

2.  the boatride from australia was a bitch for some of the cars and it collapsed the strut bushings.  this results in some 17" wheel models rubbing tires on the inside struts when underinflated or in spritied driving.  i replaced mine when i replaced my struts, mine were fine.

if you have any questions just ask.

*the rear end is not weak in these cars.  the factory subs will take 500rwhp.  wheel hop is an issue at launch as this is an IRS vehicle.  this can be fixed with drag bags or with drag springs.  this is not an issue unless dragracing the car.

WTF is this shit?  our cars don't have half of this shit and the other half is asinine...........tire pressure, this is somehow specific to GTO's?

i.e. we can't use E85, 93 octane is recommended.
enteraintment system-headphone.  impossible, not an option.
onstar. impossible, not an option.
navigation system. impossible, not an option.
vinyl roof problems. impossible, not an option.
etc.....

so basically........if you don't know what the fuck you're talking about, don't.

i'm tired of the bitching about these cars because 99% of it is armchair assholes that somehow think that because it doesn't look fast it isn't.  i've addressed every one of taxman's bitches and every one of them had it's own TSB that should have been fixed by the dealer.  it sucks when you get a first year vehicle and get every damned glitch there was but it happens.  a shitty dealer does not = a shitty car.

Dealers, as in 4, corporate support equally was lacking as well.  I work in the cust service business and I have never seen/heard of anything handeled that bad.  I have seen issues handeled badly for a few days or a week, but not over months like mine was.

I had problems, lots of problems, corporate and the dealers liked to ignore them and didnt want to deal with me.  Problems that were just annoying get worse.  Attitude from dealers gets worse.  They did a great job of turning me against them and pissing me off.

Mine didnt have the 1 glitch I wanted.  Atleast I only had to change the oil twice.

looks like someone is talking out of their ass.  the holden platform is a VERY good platform.  compared to the m3 the gto is almost equal.  high quality from the aussies count for quite a lot with the newer gto's.  you want more in depth research go to ls1tech.com or ls1gto.com.  not only are they great cars, theres a LOT you can do to tailor them to your liking.

some '06s had leaky front struts.  monroe made a batch using the wrong oil and some people got fucked.  i was one of them.  if you put a finger down in the cup you can feel whether or not there is oil in there.  my car was in this batch and did leak.  i took it to my dealer who told me they'd replace the one but not the other one.  instead of dealership shopping i just told them to go fuck themselves and redid my front suspension for performance since i was going to do it eventually anyway.

this car is completely capable of high 12s, low 13s from the factory and is comfortable as hell.  test drive the car and it will make the decision for you.

the only bitches i have about this car are as follows:

1.  the 6 speeds have an indirect shifter, it NEEDS to be replaced if you ever decide to drive the car in a spirited manner.  stock shifter sucks.

2.  the boatride from australia was a bitch for some of the cars and it collapsed the strut bushings.  this results in some 17" wheel models rubbing tires on the inside struts when underinflated or in spritied driving.  i replaced mine when i replaced my struts, mine were fine.

if you have any questions just ask.

*the rear end is not weak in these cars.  the factory subs will take 500rwhp.  wheel hop is an issue at launch as this is an IRS vehicle.  this can be fixed with drag bags or with drag springs.  this is not an issue unless dragracing the car
.

Maybe I was thinking CTS-V's

I was trying to give some general guidelines for buying any performance car used.

I like the GTO's.

so in summary:

YOUR car had issues with known TSBs.  YOUR dealers would not fix your TSB problems.  YOU gave up on the car when you could have easily fixed the problems yourself and YOU continue, to this fucking day, to rabidly interject your experience into any thread even slightly resembling a forum to do so. gotcha.

I appreciate the response.  I have the car in the driveway.  Dealer has let me keep it overnight.  On the strut issue, do I just put my hand down into the top of the strut through the wheel well to check for leaks?  The shifter feels fine to me but this is only my 2nd manual trans vehicle.  My other being a 99 Frontier I still have but its like driving a tractor its so loose.  I already had a stang rev its engine at me going by.  I'm not into racing and not real good at a manual trans even if I was.  I just want something fun to drive that sounds bad ass.

GTO's are awesome cars!  cant go wrong with them...

you could get a c5 z06 for the same price as 06 gto though...and c5's rock

The Vette just doesn't have enough room.  I've looked at a couple including one that supposedly was 1 owner, lightly driven.  But upon test driving the engine was knocking badly.  Dealer admitted nothing.

there will be a "cup" where the bottom of the front strut spring sits.  you can put a finger in there or use a flashlight to see if there is any visible oil.  if it just came from the dealer and it was in this batch there was a TSB on changing the struts so it may have already been done if it was subject.

the shifter is awful for a performance vehicle.  2nd to 3rd is sloppy and long.  if you change to a real shifter you WILL appreciate the difference.

don't worry about the stang, you've got a solid half a second on it in the 1/4 if you hit your shifts.

does sound good stock doesn't it?  i was pleasantly suprised but still immediately put straight through bullets and an X pipe on mine..........ls2gto.com has sound clips of every imaginable exhaust combination in the exhaust section

I hope this is not directed at me... I know how to look up TSBs, which apparently you don't.
Step 1: Get Alldata subscription.
Step 2: Enter 2006 Pontiac GTO.
Step 3: Click on "show all applicable TSBs".
Step 4: Cut-and-paste.

This is what Alldata shows for TSBs. Get over it. Some are bad (oil leakage) most aren't. TSBs are Technical Service Bulletins and are designed for information dissemination. They do not necessarily describe a problem, but rather answer questions someone might have about the car.

I made no judgement on whether it is good or bad, just pulled up the list.

FWIW, they're very fast, in a straight line.
