With all the Hornady Frontier threads and issues, I set out to compile all that information in one location.  Posted a partial list of my findings in another thread. Finally catalogued all my collected data, and figured I'd put it in a new, topic specific thread.

So, if anyone has examples to add to the list, or notices data I've missed, let me know. Hoping to keep this as a single reference to make things easier on anyone who's interested in this topic.

Note: New issues added to the list after the original thread date are called out in bold/italics

Known Issues with Links

Hornady Frontier Over Pressure: 62 gr SP, pressure signs and blown primers, Lot #SMQ18C844-002

Witnessed a Kaboom Today: 55 gr FMJ, kaboom and blown primers, Lot #SMQ18C844-003

My AR exploded in my face today: 62 gr BTHP, kaboom and potential jackets rupturing, Lot #SMQ18C847-001

Another Kaboom with Frontier 5.56 Ammo: 55 gr FMJ, kaboom with blown case, Lot #SMQ18C867-008

Hornady Frontier Blown Primers and Jacket Rupture: 55 gr M193, blown primers and potential ruptured jackets resulting in suppressor strikes, Lot # SMQ18C867-007 (Added 10/26)

Frontier 55gr boom & damaged extractor: 55 gr FMJ, blown case and damaged extractor; also had a 2nd poster in the thread discuss their friend having bulged cases, Lot # unknown

Hornady Frontier Possibly Loaded Hotter: Assuming 55 gr (poster said .223), pressure signs (blown primers, split cases, ejector smear), Lot # unknown

14.5 Mod 2 and Hornady 75 Frontier Blown Primers: 75 gr BTHP, blown primers in multiple rifles, Lot # unknown

Hornady Frontier Hot Loads = weapon failure: 62 gr and 68 gr, blown primers in multiple rifles, Lot # unknown

Catastrophic Malfunction?: Frontier Ammo (no info on loading), kaboom, Lot # unknown

Academy Sports Reviews: 55 gr FMJ, blown primers and blown cases, Lot # unknown

Bass Pro/Cabelas Reviews: 62 gr FMJ, Kaboom and damaged extractor from case separation, plus blown primers, Lot # unknown

Cheaper than Dirt Reviews: 68 gr BTHP, blown primers in multiple rifles, Lot # unknown

I've also compiled the above into a spreadsheet. An image of which will have to suffice for now...

I'm particularly interested in this topic, as I purchased a bunch of the Frontier ammo; wanting to do accuracy testing. It's pretty economical, and their ammo usually is pretty solid. Then, these threads about issues started popping up. So, I've not fired any of the ammo I bought. Just waiting a while for all of this to play out.

Kind of glad I haven't, as the 62 gr SP I have is the same Lot # as one of the above linked threads. Below are the lots/loading I have on-hand that I'd hoped to test. Think I have 3-4 boxes of each. If I ever do shoot the stuff, I'll log and share my findings.

Hope this helps anyone also trying to follow the Frontier saga!

Appreciate you compiling all of this. I knew there was a 75gr T2 KB/over-pressure posted but couldn't find the link.

It's important that we acknowledge the KBs across different bullets/loadings. I've seen conjecture here that 'just' the M193 was having issues, but we can see clearly that-that is not the case.

Be careful out there Arfcom...

You’re welcome! If you find that thread/info, post it up here. Although, if it’s not from the Frontier line, I may just note it. Trying to keep this specific to the Frontier line.

Part of the reason I started this thread is because I also saw a lot of comments suggesting the issues were limited to only their m193. The 55gr might be the most prevalent. But it’s certainly not the only loading producing issues.

For those just discovering this.  To date Hornady's official response has been that the ammunition is not defective, and at least once responded the Kaboom must have been due to an OOB explosion.  It doesn't take a master statistician to have doubt about that.  But in any event, point being: to date none of those lot numbers have been recalled, so if you have one - you're on your own.

Yeah I’ll stick with Federal LC XM193.

Now before someone says they are made in the same place I think it’s obvious that they are not the same. You don’t see thread after thread of LC XM193 KB, actually none at all. The problem is clearly with something going on with Hornady’s Frontier ammo.

That’s a very good call out. If one goes through each of those threads, Hornady’s responses are the most troubling part. The majority from them is, “it must have fired OOB”. Which is compete bs.

In another, their response amounted to blaming it on the guy’s rifle being too dirty. Maybe not quite as bad as the OOB statements; if we ignore that (IIRC) the guy had cleaned it less than 200 rounds prior to the incident. But then they doubled-down on stupid and asserted the AR platform should be cleaned essentially every few magazines. WTF!?!?

When it comes to a recall, my hunch is that they may not actually know how many lots they’d need to recall. Especially seeing that the lot numbers and loadings all vary. So instead of doing the right thing, as it may be REALLY costly, they’re just going to ride each out as a unique instance and hope for the best. Again, that’s 100% my own opinion on what’s happening with their responses. Which, if close to accurate, is pretty shitty of them to do to the customers who’ve bought this stuff.

That’s the million dollar question. Federal hasn’t, and doesn’t, seem to have had these issues with their ammo. So, what’s different about the Frontier loadings? Very perplexing.

This exchange got me thinking about adding some info in the OP about how Hornady Frontier ammo is made. Not wanting to post bad info, I went verify its provenance. Ended up finding some interesting info in the Q&A section of a product page on Lucky Gunner’s site...

According to them, Hornady does the loading. And all Federal does is make the cases. That seemed contrary to what I thought about the ammo’s production.

Hopefully someone can verify; as I thought it was Federal doing the loading, and all Hornady did was supply the projectiles.

If what’s on Lucky Gunner’s site is true, that really changes things.

Correction:

I have 2x150ct M193 that say mfg by contractor at LC.

I have 2x150ct .223 55gr (that lists the same velocity as M193) that say they were mfg in Nebraska.

Honestly its all in an ammo can and will probably remain there forever.  Got plenty of cases of Wolf Gold and IMI M193.

Seeing a report of an issue with the 5.56 75gr T2 is concerning as I have a decent amount but I've also had no issues when I've used it.

The only issue that I have seen with the FR320, one report, was a "blown" primer.
I have had dropped primers on IMI MK262 clone, resolved by changing from an H2 to a H3 buffer
I have shot about 1,500 rounds of the Frontier FR320 in multiple rifles without any signs of overpressure.

I didn’t even think to look on the boxes for mfg details. Will have to check out those I have on hand. My 62gr SPs are from the same Lot as one in a problem thread. Will be interesting to see where that lot came from.

A Nebraska origin would indicate Hornady may be loading some of the Frontier ammo. If both Federal and Hornady are doing the actual manufacturing, that piece of info would have been important to determine with each problem thread. Too bad it wasn’t on anyone’s radar. As I think most, myself included, believed LC was doing all the loading.

Reading is fundamental and I didn't zoom in well enough to read it well with my phone.  Blowing primers isn't all that uncommon from batch to batch of hot 5.56.

I've blow some primers with Magtech CBC 77gr before, it was a hot day and a primer into the fire control group is a pain.

Wish everyone would keep up with their boxes/lot #s, it sure would help narrow down problem lots

There is also no NATO cross on the 5.56 headstamped brass, nor the .223.

Both varieties list 3240fps as velocity, Hornady American Gunner 55gr BTHP also lists this as the velocity.  If that's accurate then they likely have the same pressure which is concerning

Maybe I should update the OP to clarify that not all issues resulted in a KB. But instead include instances that indicate potentially excessive pressures.

Either way, I felt it was worth including them. While a blown primer may not be the same as a KB. It still should be cause for concern. Guys who reload aren’t going to shrug it off if they experience that sort of issue. Same is true for those of us running factory ammo. Might not destroy my rifle. But a primer locking up a rifle can make for a bad day.

Agree in that I wish more would have kept info on their lot numbers. Also checked my boxes on hand and all have the Nebraska address. Same goes for all the linked threads where we know the lot number.

Any signs of excessive pressure are a concern, blown primers are usually a sign the ammo needs to be trashed or used only for cooler weather/range use.  I mostly shoot my SBR with a can, with an adjustable gas block I can actually see stuff on fired brass again

I reloaded all of my .223 ammo from 06-13 or so when ammo showed back up on the shelves.  Blown primer with a reload is a big alarm!

Even now I mostly use wolf gold for fun stuff out to 300yrds, and 75/77gr reloads beyond that.  Pretty much shooting steel entirely these days.

Thanks for noting that. However, I don't think them listing the MV identical (although it's wrong) is a signficant issue, other than an indicator of attention to detail & that 'something' is going on. The 3240 is a common SAAMI (24" bbl) spec for 55gr 223. M193 spec is 3165 for a 20" bbl measured 78 feet from the muzzle. Once that's taken or extrapolated to an actual MV the difference is negligible in terms of acceptable +/-, even for the M193.  (If you can't fire 55gr running 3280 or so your rifle has a problem.)

Mis-labelling is an indicator, but something else is going on.  Thoughts?

And thanks to the OP for wrangling this all into a single thread.  The crickets from Hornady are deafening.

Unfortunately, that really is the only semblance of a common denominator we have. That, and the problem lots all have Hornady’s Nebraska info listed on the back of the box. Not something that seemed important in each of the linked threads. But, thanks to Freakinout, it appears there are other boxes out there that instead say “Mfg by contractor at LC”.

To many variables that are unknown to blame the ammo. No recalls by Hornady and this ammo is being sold by the boxcars. If Sam at SGA had any question about the safety of the ammo he would not be selling it.

It only takes a single boo boo to kaboom a rifle when you load ammo as hot as Frontier is.  Wish they aimed a hair lower on velocity and we've be raving the MOA capable blasting ammo

That's one of the points I was trying to make in the other Frontier Threads.

When you load on the hotter side, there is less margin of error between hot, overpressure and or kaboom.

If their equipment was throwing heavier powder charges during the time of manufacturing the Kaboom lots; that would explain it.

Great idea to centralize the Frontier issues.

I would suggest you alter the title to reflect / add / include the kaboom aspect.... so others, when Google searching can find your thread.

Thanks! Started with just taking some notes for myself. But figured others would be interested in having the data combined in one place. I like the idea about the slight thread title edit. Will do that now.

Side note...I was the guy who sent you a random PM on TOS; shortly after you decided to (rightfully) abandon that sinking ship. Not sure that you’ll remember our brief exchange, but glad to have taken your advice to start spending more time here.

I wonder if this issue with Frontier is the same issue that IMI--which a lot of us think is the gold standard--was having when it first came online. I have shot M193 exclusively through a CMMG WASP barrel for the last 3,000 rounds (mixed 233/556 for first few thousand), clean it every time I shoot, typically 2-300 rounds at a time.

Anyway, haven't shot yet, but just googled and found all this bad info and am slightly concerned, but think it's equally possible it's out of spec guns, oil left in barrel creating excessive pressure, etc.  Consider the experience below from 2017 or so.

See below:

Here's the SGammo statement on blown primers and IMI if interested. From their industry forum.

IMI has and continues to load all their ammo to conform with mil-spec for that particular load, (M855, M193, etc), however some time ago we found that in the US commercial market there is a lot of diversity of firearms including some variations and combinations or attributes that cause problems, mostly non-standard AR15s have problems with ammo loaded at the higher end of the pressure spec, so we are having the ammo loaded at the lower end of the pressure spec to reduce the primer blowouts from the guns that cannot handle the stuff loaded to the top end of the pressure spec, while still conforming to mil-spec. Pressure problems from lots imported in 2015 and early 2016 most commonly have occurred with 18" barrels or guns that have non-standard gas systems or customizations that throw off the pressure curve that is normally expected. Until early 2016 IMI had been loading all their ammo to the upper end of the pressure spec with NATO standard AR15 / M16 16" and 20" systems in mind, and the USA commercial market is just so diverse with different AR15 variations that this causes problems for some users with non-standard guns, and since they tend to blame the ammo rather than the gun based on the logic that other types of ammo work fine we had to make adjustments to the pressure levels to insure that people do not go around telling everyone the ammo is bad when if fact its their gun that just cannot handle ammo built on the upper end of the pressure spec

I posted about my positive experience with Frontier here.

I have paused because I have been testing different loadings in my 14.5 but I absolutely intend to shoot all 500 rounds through my AR pistol.  Thus far it has been great; soft points, more accurate than M193 and at the same price.

If this controversy doesn’t kill the entire line and if don’t have any kabooms I will buy more.  It’s a truck gun afterall.

Interesting as my stuff is SMQ19B8.  Maybe I am in the clear.  Although I do have a few mags of 62gr BTHP from the offending lot number that I was going to get rid of.  Now I am nervous to shoot it.

Great.  I didn't hear about these problems until right after I received my order for them.  Even better, I have the same lot # as one of these kabooms.  SMQ18C847-001.  Stressed/10.  Only 3 boxes of 20.  Could be worse.

Hornady projectiles are superb compared to any bulk mfgs.  Their 55gr fmj is moa capable without issue

I'm not a knee jerk reaction type of person. That being said, I wouldn't shoot that ammunition.

Can you return it? I assume since it's only 3 boxes, you bought it locally?

You may want to call who you ordered it from & candidly explain the situation, lot #, etc. Small amount but perhaps they'd exchange it.

I bought it online.  I only have/used XM855's and was hoping these would be a good for a couple of self defense mags because it had "hollow point" and Hornady in the name.  After a bit more research, it seems that soft points might be the way to go.
Anyway I'm pretty sure the seller (site called Wholesalehunter) would charge me a restocking fee for a refund.

I sent them a message saying I had concerns with this ammo.  I included a link to the particular thread with the lot # in question.  This is their response:

"Being that these posts were put out there no issues from Hornady that have been found. The last recall that Hornady had was in 2014 on some 470 NE ammunition. There may had been an underlining issue with this persons firearm also but who knows for sure. If this concerns you please contact Hornady about this possible issue. Contact Hornady at 800-338-3220 and speak to a representative there. If they have a doubt they can take care of this issue.

Thanks"

If they were to accept a return, they'd probably charge me a restocking fee and I'd probably have to ship it out on my own dime.  I also opened two of the boxes before I heard about all this.  I'll label the ammo as suspect and sit on em for now I guess.

Eh, worth a shot. By his phrasing it's clear he didn't read the whole thread indicating multiple issues with multiple weapons.  But it's really up to Hornady to do something.

I’ve shot ~3k of the 224 55gr fmj loading over the summer through my 3gun rifle. No issues with it on my end.

I have to say, it was crazy accurate! Only shot 3 groups from the bench but they were all sub moa (.84, .77 and .64) five shot groups. Really want to know what load they are using. I’m loading what I believe to be the same bullet (hornady 55gr fmj) and even tried some new LC brass and lapua brass but can’t get it consistently better than sub 2 MOA.

Is it the powder? I’m using h335. Getting similar velocity’s....

I had a much longer response written up but as a new poster I'm limited to 2,000 characters. Very long story short... I purchased a 500rd case of Hornady 55gr Frontier M193 Lot # SMQ18C867-007. I made it through about 200 rounds before having a catastrophic problem. Several blown primers and it also appears that the jackets were separating/rupturing. Several end cap strikes on a Surefire 300 SPS mounted to a KAC SR-15. Hornady's response has been that they have never heard of any issues with the ammo, that jacket separations are extremely rare and that most likely there is something wrong with my rifle and/or the way I mounted the silencer. I currently have an RMA number and am in the process of shipping the ammunition back to them for "testing."

Interesting.  I've got 1,000 of the 68gr BTHP .223 load.  I haven't gotten out to test it yet.

I had thought the issues were limited to the 55gr M193 load, but it looks like it may be a bit more widespread.

Another lot # sequential to one already listed above in the roll-up.  Maybe add to the list at top...

There is a lot about this hobby that I don't understand but how can a rifle issue cause blown primers?   Or is that another way for them to deflect blame?

Having a tight chamber and short leade can cause issues with 5.56 pressure ammunition.... the resulting pressure spikes can pop primers.  As can a timing issue where the rifle unlocks way too early while the brass is still obturated and under pressure.

Maybe I'm wrong but I'm thinking a Wylde Chamber could contribute to this?
