It’s time for Hornady to recall this crap. I’ve got a couple hundred rounds of it and not quite sure what to,do with it. 1. hold on to it in case it is recalled. 2. shoot it with video documentation to sue Hornady when my rifle blows up. 3. dispose of it somehow. Maybe we need a poll? |

In class today, one of my students had a ka-boom with Frontier 5.56mm ammo. Upon further inspection, his YHM Turbo can was fucked up. |

It was 55 grain
Quoted:
Ammo was 55gr. Upper was factory LMT 10.5". Appears the only damage was to the bolt (no carrier damage observed) and the suppressor. I was physically standing beside the shooter watching the ejection port when it happened. Mag did not blow out. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/r9tXHs.jpg |

Yes I'd like to know as well.
![]() Now this supressor damage is very interesting. 1. It (like all the other evidence) demonstrates the bullshit claim from Hornady on OOB detonation. 2. It shows the bullet is not stable upon exit. This leads me to believe the real issue is with the projectiles. Lake city might be loading this for Hornady, but it is using a Hornady provided projectile. Since this bullet was not stable and impacted the suppressor baffles, it is likely that the bullet had a major defect when it was manufactured, or was somehow damaged while firing. I have suspected the bullet being the source of the pressure spike, and this almost confirms it. There will not be any easy way to tell if the bullet is getting damaged during the loading process, or there is a fundamental manufacturing flaw. I am not sure how you could damage a bullet enough in loading it to cause it to come apart while firing, unless you seriously damaged the jacket. Hornady 55gr FMJ bullets they sell at retail use the AMP jacket, which is normally thicker than M193 jackets and tends not to fragment easily. I wonder if they are using that bullet, or if they are using some other/new bullet as the projectile in Frontier 5.56. One of the other kabooms showed their target, which showed lead coming out of the core, likely due to jacket rupturing.

Quoted: So.. do you think I’m ok shooting my SMQ18H816-468 ? The lot I bought is SMQ18L868-016. Although I only shot 20 rounds out of a case I bought to put back, it functioned fine and there was nothing abnormal that I could see. Personally I'm not worried about my lot. You should shoot a little, snd check the spent cases for pressure signs, if you're concerned. |

I mean the bullet looks normal to me, but I've never sectioned one:
223 Loading: ![]() 223 Remington, 55gr FMJ Frontier by Hornady (FR100) Review 5.56 Loading. it has a pretty hefty charge. Lot #SMQ18A840-001 ![]() 5.56x45mm, 55gr FMJ. M193 (FR200) Frontier by Hornady |

ItalianStallion will be along to tell you how great of a purchase you made
How can people be so stupid to keep buying that shit Dude must work at hornady or has some motive in defending that stuff at all costs. The damage is piling up. Hornady says pound sand Buy at your own risk |
| Well fuck. I didn't know about any of the problems this ammo had. About a year ago i bought a bunch of it as my local shop was selling it for less then $5 a box and it was the first time i have ever seen any of this ammo. Haven't gotten to shoot any as i have been still shooting thru my other ammo. |
|
I went through a 500 round can in June 2018 with no issues at all. Lot was SMQ18D867-010. I reload and inspect all cases very carefully. Not a single sign of over pressure out of the entire batch. Only fired in 5.56 chambers of course.
After all the circus around the brand however, I've not purchased again. |

To those that have already bought this stuff.
Just buy a cheap Radical Firearms upper or barrel to shoot it with so you have the loose barrel nut safety relief going for you when it kabooms. Seriously though, never once had any desire to buy Frontier because when it was introduced it was waaaaaaaay too cheap for what it was supposed to be, which screamed 'cut corners' to me. |
| I was present for the incident linked in the OP and felt very bad for the shooter’s loss that day. With situations like this so common with this ammo, I still can’t fathom why people would take a chance to save just a few bucks. This is not a cheap hobby we are into and to skimp on ammo quality and risk very expensive damage to a gun, or in this case a stamped NFA item that is not easily or inexpensively replaced, just doesn’t make sense to me. |

This. The notion that it's not statistically likely is a non-starter. That's like saying "I don't carry all the time because statistically I live in a safe area" or "Forget that I'm standing here soaked; the weather gal said it was only a 30% chance of rain." It's a binary thing - it happens or it doesn't, and what if the first round out of your statistically "ok" 500 rounds is "the one." It's almost like someone is running an ELDEST SON routine with this ammo, lol. Not even in my beater plain-jane carbine, no thank you. Quoted:

But I heard it was nothing to worry about. Read it here on Arf. Guy even shot like 20 rds, pulled 10 or so bullets and eye fucked the powder/some spent casings. He's pretty sure the remaining ~970 rds are gtg. |

If I had some I would probably just stick it back as a potential barter item for tougher times against something unrelated in a trade with someone I don't care about. Quoted:
