I have an AR pistol that I built from scratch as a cheaper training/truck gun alternative to my SBR. Because I was trying to keep costs down I went with a 10.5 faxon 1:8 twist barrel that I think I got on sale.
The downside is that this thing hates heavy stuff. Even 68gr BTHP is all the fuck over the place. The upside is that it shoots 55 grain stuff like a champ, even cheaper stuff. For example .223 55 gr Frontier spire points are doing very well. I have heard a lot of negative things about frontier but I am in love with this stuff. On a good day when I am doing my part this ammo/barrel combination is shooting 1.5 MOA. Even on days when I am shooting like shit it’s still giving me 3 MOA. At 28 cents a round I will take that all day long. As a bonus, the soft point is good piece of mind were I to need it defensively. Yeah yeah it’s not bonded. That’s not my intended purpose for this ammunition as I already have dedicated barrier blind ammo. But for a budget factory load that is relatively accurate and packs a soft point I am very impressed. Anyone else loving this stuff, or am I all alone in the night? |
| I shot a variety of 55 grain pointed soft point ammo for years and years.........long before I was told that only expensive solids, magical, mystical, chem bonded, electro bonded, interlokt, etc bullets of 190 grains or more were acceptable for use in any AR for home defense/self defense applications. Everything that was alive before I shot it was dead after I shot it. Accuracy was very good as well. And remember that for the better part of 40 years the bullet and the weight were considered to to be the state of the art for the times. Something to be said for a bullet that fragments leaving just parts and pieces, indicative of max energy transfer. |

I don't know about the 55 gr SP, but the 62 gr SP did well in this gel test on the AR15.com YouTube channel. I've got a bunch of that and would not hesitate to use it for SD/HD.

Maybe one of these days I'll go back to the 75gr T2 loading. At 50cpr, you can't do better than that for a match and HD round. |

With buying components in bulk it's costing 16 cents per round and delivers superior accuracy to other "stack it deep" ammo I have found, all with great terminal performance on anything short of barriers. OP, if you like the spire points, reload with them and you'll like them even more. |

I'd would advise everyone to steer clear of Frontier, but some are going to still use it. Maybe Hornady will fix it after someone gets hurt???
