Recommendations on a good plane to learn DCS? So far, my wish list is F-14 (when available), F-18, AV-8B, and A-10. The F-5 also looks fun. |

They lead long streams of countermeasures because the programming in them is able to tell flares/chaff vs jet. But pulsing your countermeasures will help confuse them, especially older models. Newer SAMs like the S-300 are extremely hard to defeat, for them it's better to play a game of chicken until they expend all their munitions. It's a really nice sim for the F-16, and dirt cheap if you don't have it. That could tide you over until DCS releases it.

If you want complete the A-10C is great. It does have quite the learning curve.
The Harrier is almost complete and a good jet. The Hornet is the newest hotness and will be amazing when it’s finally done. Helicopters are fun to try learning if you are a masochist.

I'm trying to get the custom arfcom livery but its not working. I made a livery folder in my saved game folder and put it in there but its not working...I followed this format: Go to c:\users\\Saved Games\DCS (or DCS.Openbeta, DCS Openalpha). Create the folder "Liveries" Under "Liveries", create the folder "uh-1h" Extract the contents of "UH-1H_USN_HAL-3_Seawolves_v1_3.7z" to Liveries\uh-1h. You should see the following path: c:\users\\Saved Games\DCS\Liveries\uh-1h\USN HAL-3 Seawolves. |

Hey, what HOTAS are you guys using, and/or which do you like? Counting down the days till I start ordering stuff.
Right now I'm thinking I'll get the Warthog. The Virpil looks really slick, but it's not in stock and I heard shipping is quite a bit. Any advice on rudder pedals would also be welcomed. |

The warthog is a great stick though I can’t speak for the Vipril.
I just have Saitek pedals and they are good enough but not great. |

I have top end Warthogs and Cougars, all modded. MFD's and all that jazz.. yet I am using a Saitek combat pedal. Never saw the need for something better, even though the thrustmaster new pedals are tempting |

Unfortunately I have almost $1200 into my current HOTAS and Pedals
First bought an X55 4 years ago when I started playing, sold it to my buddy after a couple weeks and bought a Thrustmaster Warthog, made my own extension and used it like that for a couple years. Mostly good. Had a wire in the base break off from the stick connector a couple times, fixed that with a soldering iron. Then the rubber washer in the gimbal squeezed out, making the center of the stick lopsided, made my own replacement with some PTFE on the laser cutter at work. First bought CH pedals, they work well enough, tried a set of used Saitek Combat pedals, not really for me, ended up selling them for $250 ($100 more than I paid) because they're discontinued. Went back to the CH for a while that I modded to remove the center detent. Then I splurged for MFG Crosswinds. I made my own "combat" style pedals for them which I like a lot more than the stock ones and Milan has failed to deliver a Combat style pedal for them after years of saying it's coming. Then I bought a VKB Gunfighter Pro with the Warthog grip adapter, been using that coming up on two years, the pickle button in the Warthog grip started to crap out recently, replaced it with an OTTO mil-spec style button, had to clearance some ribs inside the metal housing a bit for it to fit and glued it in place, all is well again. A lot of people will bag on the Warthog stick base for it's inferior Gimbal compare to VKB or VPC, but after using both, it's really fine. I think a 3" extension suits it best, combined with replacing the rubber washer (a lot of people call it an o-ring, it's not) with a PTFE one. I have no complaint with the throttle except for the horrible slew control, but it's usable with some tuning and there's even an aftermarket replacement now. |
