Recommendations on a good plane to learn DCS? So far, my wish list is F-14 (when available), F-18, AV-8B, and A-10. The F-5 also looks fun.

Can't help you on pedals, but the T.16000M Stick and Throttle has been very very good for me. I grew up on an old sidewinder which got replaced with a cheap Saitek. I finally stepped up to the T.16000 and I'm happy with that. My only complaint is that the throttle is sticky and I'll open it up at some point to remedy that. But if it's any indication of the quality, I think the pedals would be a good option to look at on a budget.

I got a set of these a few weeks ago and couldn’t take the stickiness of the throttle. Looking around everyone recommended the nyogel 767a.
It was a bit pricey but holy crap did it make a world of difference. Much smoother and easier to control for fine movements now!

I’m saving up for the warthog tho. Or begging for it from my GF for a whole year gift. Lol

I had two of my cougars hotas modded. One with the FSSB mod (falcon times) and the other one with a NNDAN mode, to which I added hall sensors rather than potentiometers, to both the FLCS and TQS.

My 1st warthog has been modded in the sense that it now sits in a center position in my home pit, with a 10cm extension and I have completely taken it apart, polished everything, regreased it with a proper grease. Butter smooth now. The original grease tends to get sticky very quickly.

My other warthogs has been similarly taken apart, polished, greased, and fit with a green main spring (less tension) and remains a side stick. Both my throttle have been fitted with a push through Afterburner part.

Holy hell.  I upgraded my shitty low end system a little, and I can actually do shit way better.  The hornet is flyable and fightable now!

I was getting crashes a lot with the hornet (A10 was fine except in really busy environments) pretty frequently.  It's running off an SSD now, kicked up the ram a good bit, and made a modest graphics card improvement.  I'll probably build a ground up new system some time over the next year.

If you are planning on using a headset with Multi Player, I cant stress enough how great the Pro Clip is for the TrackIR.   It clips on to your headset.  I barely even notice it is there.   For around $20 bucks more, you can get the TrackIP Pro series that has both the reflective hat clip and the LED Pro tracker.   Its well worth it imho.

I did velcro wrap the cables to the TrackIR and the Headset together, the TrackIR wire ran between the cup and mic boom and have it tucked in tight on the left ear cup.   Hell, Im using a mono Logitech C590 (I think thats the model) headset that is light as anything else I have run.   I only use the headset for Radio comms on SRS/Discord though.

Well it is. But yeah its not its primary role, but given how long thats been a problem is pretty sad and indicative of razbams lack of fixing stuff.

The harrier is fucked 8 ways from sunday, and very little has been fixed/implemented in 14 months. The basic CCRP bomb modes have not worked right from day 1.

And now their mig 19 has been delayed by ED cuz its not up to snuff.

That right there is a "pattern" IMO.

All I can say about their "plans" for their plane set at this point is "fuck I wish some other dev were doing it"

I thought the DMT was waiting on the IR rebuild that ED is horribly overdue to make correctly.

DMT is the dual mode tracker, so daylight TV and laser spot tracking. The IRL DMT can track moving targets, the raz version can't. So nothing to do with IR.

The IR rebuild I assume you mean FLIR. The Harrier Navflir is fucked up in the sense its currently offset from the HUD view. So mainly this means you cant dumb bomb using CCIP at night. IRL you need to align it by boresighting, but that functionality is also missing. And im not sure what the ED rebuild of the FLIR functionality would have to do with that.

The state the harrier is in is pretty sad, and the worse part is that its not being fixed. All their bugfixes are mostly trivial bullshit.

Got you.  I thought you were talking about the ability of the DMT to identify hot spots automatically.

But if those details make the game literally unplayable for you then... well even the Black Shark is having issues with the beacon light showing up inside the cockpit so I don’t know what to suggest.

No, I didn't bring up those "Details"

The AV8BNA is a Day/Night capable strike aircraft that can't currently do either mission very well. Thats pretty far from "small details", and yeah I get that its EA, but with EA you expect some sort of progress, which hasn't been happening.

Bombing for the most part is broken entirely, thats a "Big Detail" and the fact it hasn't been fixed in 1+ years is a pretty major "fuck you suckers, we gots our Cuy eatin money" notice to the community.

My list of "minor details"

1. CCRP mode is totally borked with the ASL line leading you away from the target (thats the "fixed" version, it was worse before, where the ASL had literally no relationship to anything, not the plane, not the fucking target, it was just a random ass line on the screen with some random symbol) I dunno, if eating Cuy makes you retarded but the fact that CCRP doesn't work on any Razbam plane makes a compelling argument.

2. CCIP 'ish works but lacks various symbology, and functionality, or symbology is wrong, plus relatively straightforward featuers like CCIP/CCRP conversion modes don't fucking work.

3. The various ways the harrier FC/ARBS "solves" the bombing triangle problem is all fucked up or more likely totally unimplemented so you get "arcade mode" bombing, totally unacceptable for DCS. Look at it this way, if Heatblur didn't bother to model the AWG9 radar on the F14 you'd thing that was a problem right?

4. Can't use CCIP at night is fucked (see Navflir above)

5. Sidearms variously bugged though at least they seem to be trying to fix those

6. Shitloads of other missing functionality (DMT/sidewinder slave, various waypoint bombing things, the nav system being semi functional etc etc.) You start reading the NATOOPS or the TacManual on it and you left scratching your head as to why the hell did they half ass implment feature XYZ or why didn't they finish this other important feature.

And yes you can use the TPOD to guide LMAV's or use FLIR mavs (still missing some functionality, and variously bugged), and maybe if you are lucky LGB's (but see CCRP being fucked above) but the harrier was in service from 1987, and didn't get TPOD functionality till the mid 2000's where it was used to drop LGB's onto mud huts for the most part. IF I want to say "simulate" a GW1 mission, or some of the strikes from the mid 90's in Yugoslavia I'm left holding my dick in my hand.

So, not really small issues, the plane can't be used to do even a fraction of the missions it was designed to do and really it should never have been released in the sad state it was. I mainly wish Heatblur would re-do it, because they seem like a good dev team.

I personally think ED put Razbam in timeout over the harrier and told em no more early access until you unfuck it, hence the mig19 being "released complete" but again it also had major issues so its on delay. I'm fairly sad that they are doing the Mig23, which I really want, and the Mudhen (which, given the harrier issues, probably won't be able to drop bombs on day 1 either, not to mention its a vastly more complicated airframe and avionics than the harrier and multicrew). Razbam's strength is making nice looking 3D models, comprehending and programming systems accurately seems to be a major issue for em.

I mostly fly other modules, and I can live with bugs and EA as other Devs do them. The Hornet, yup its got bugs, and its missing functionality, But hey its CCRP mode actually works!  I also see ED fixing bugs and adding functionality on regular basis so, hey all good. Mig 21, yup, has bugs, but mostly complete and it looks like L3 is working on fixing the major issues (frame rates/ASP), and it was released for version 1.5 and most of the issues are due to the "upgrade". As for heatblur, I think the F14 is probably the most overhyped module ever, but it looks like they aim to release it as complete as possible, and from what I can tell it will be able to most of its AA mission on day 1, and from what I can tell it will have a good portion of the bombcat capability too.

Also, if you know any harrier guys that could explain to me the correct way the CCRP ASL line is "supposed" to work I'd appreciate it. There is a 15 page thread about on the ED forums thats nearly a year old. And there is alot of unsubstantiated it should work like X in there (the tac manual is no help because its contradictory).

Honestly look at the aircraft you are flying and make your own. At least if you are into the sim experience. I've got a warthog, and tried pre-made profiles for other planes, but they were mostly lame. My philosphy is map what the real world hotas has (aside from FC3 planes) and the click the rest in the pit. But I have VR, which either makes that easier or harder to do based on your perspective.

I've got a well below average system (5 year old gaming laptop) and I can at least run a RIFT. Its not "pretty" but I can get decent frames and its crazy immersive, I literally can't fly in pancake mode anymore. I don't mind bugs. I mind planes with literally their core functionality missing and the Dev's not giving a rotten shit in 1+ years into EA and choosing to focus on bullshit like a "re-texture" or a 3d pilot. Dear Cuy eaters, your plane be broke yo, fix that shit...

My buddy's is taped back together as well.  It's like ten bucks more for a DelanClip that's made out of metal.  But hey, you do you.

I only used the hat clip for TIR. But now I just do VR, no going back.

A while back we got on the discussion of "running out of USB ports for peripherals" in one of my threads.  I'm finally looking into that stuff now.

Are these some of the options you guys were talking about?  (Planning Warthog HOTAS, pedals, TrackIR, and headset to start...keyboard, mouse, printer as well)

USB 2.0 adapter plate

or

Amazon Basics 7-port USB hub

I use a lot out of USB ports and have that riser, a USB 3 riser, a USB 3 pci card and a powered hub.

That said I also have a hub on my flight sim chair so I don’t have to have four things go all the way back to the PC or the other hub.

this one is a tad more, but might "future proof" you
Oculus seems to recommend this one.  itll provide more power to the things that need it down the road.

If you have the PCI express slots for it then it's a good card, it's the one I have.  But the plate he linked uses the extra headers on the motherboard and just needs a blank place on the case.

Look at an anker 7 port hub. I use 2 on my laptop for a rift, warthog, tracir, mouse, other stuff. Rift needs power, preferably its own usb 3 port. Other VR devices may vary. Id reccomend something other than a rift at this point, its older tech. This year may see the introducion of 20ish ppd vr, which would be a big upgrade.

Good recommendations, guys. Not sure when I'll do VR. Probably won't be till this summer at least (bday present), so I've got some time for that.

I thought I had my motherboard all picked out, but now I'm second guessing myself and looking all of them over again to see what has the best options, ports, etc.  This USB thing popped into my head again as some of these boards have only a few USB ports. The PCI cards would be a nice option for sure.

Once I can do it subsonic I plan to try a supersonic run... Then I'll have to bitch to Mag3 about getting those mach effects modeled...

Actually VR wise, the smart money right now is to wait a bit. I'm building a new system in a few months myself, and I'm holding off on the rift upgrade.

Basically there are 3 things to wait for:

1. the reference 2160x2160 displays, HP is teasing one right now. IF the manufacturers aren't retards, they will keep a ~100 degree FOV, which will basically get you into the mid 20's Pixel Per Degree range. Current gen stuff is in the low to mid teens PPD wise. Once the tech hits the 30's its golden. Your retinal resolution is ~70ppd, but its hard to tell 30's from anything higher, but its very easy to see that the teens look like shit relatively speaking. Otherwise the Odessey + will hopefully get a bit better support in the next few months and I'd call it gen 1.5.

2. A GFX card that can actually push enough pixels fast enough, the 2080ti's were a bit dissapointing in this regard. But it may be just enough to run the 2160 displays.

3. DCS worlds "VR optimizations" and "Vulkan"

I'm betting they happen exactly in the order I posted too... I expect to see the next gen cards in 2020 before ED actually manages to do anything about VR/vulkan. I could be wrong though.

That's my thoughts now on VR as well - to wait.  I had been planning to build something to do VR now, but then I got to see some DCS videos of a guy recording exactly what he sees in VR.  I think he was showing the Rift and Odyssey.  Bleh.  Now, I know everyone is crazy over the immersion and that "once you try it, you'll never go back," and I completely get that, but I feel like I want to wait a while.  I mean, I'm still gonna need to learn how to fly all of these friggin' airplanes anyway, so maybe once I've mastered them the next generation will be out.

With those thoughts in mind, now on to your other points.

- GFX card.  We've beat this to death, and you guys have given me an awful lot of useful info.  Since I've started asking questions here, my initial thoughts and expectations have evolved, and are probably a bit more "realistic" now. I've gone from my initial 1070 Ti > 2070 > 2080 > now 2080 Ti in my build lists.  I was going to do the 2080 Ti specifically for VR multiplayer.  Now that I'm gonna wait a bit (VR isn't "that" much, so I'll still probably get a current-gen this Summer anyway), I feel like I might be better off with a faster 2080 card, or the low-end EVGA Black 2080 Ti @ $999, and save that $500 or so Ti money for other stuff.  The Black is not a beast by any means, but gets me more VRAM.  Ultimately, the most important thing I'm after is smooth displays at really good detail (1080-1440p, don't need 4k) with the ability to look around (TrackIR), and after talking with another guy that recently settled on a 2080, he sounds very happy with it...but hasn't done any MP flying yet, which still keeps me uneasy.  So I'm still nervous regarding a 2080 or 2080 Ti for general multiplayer non-VR experience.

- Vulkan, etc.  One reason I'm going with the i5-9600k.  Cheap @ ~$260, and my system should still be solid enough to throw at least a 9900k in there once the prices aren't retarded.  Just hope Vulkan is implemented while a Z390 board and these CPUs are still good enough.  lol

6 days.  SIX. DAYS, guys, and I can start ordering stuff (tho I may still be figuring it out and undecided).  You're almost rid of me.

Looking at VR recordings isn't great, and even through the lens you pretty much miss what VR is about. They are helpful to VR guys, because we know the sorts of things to look for that important. And I say this, having watched all the videos before getting my Rift a month ago. IMO, the 1:1 head tracking alone is worth it. I can't stand using a TIR at this point due to its shitty tracking and non proportional head movment. VR has one drawback (resolution, which gen 1.5/2.0 will hopefully solve), and is amazing once you do it.

Honestly I'm building a 9700k + 2070 system myself in a few months, kind of as a hedge for vulkan. I doubt that hyperhreading is gonna be a big deal for vulkan, and really its not a big deal for most things.

GFX wise, its all about the dollars, for me a 2070 is the sweet spot price vs performance wise. I'm gona take a lets try this first approach. Though if prices drop I might go for a 2080. But I think with the current state of DCS and high end cards, its the proc thats holding it back, not the card.

I should point out, I had/have 0 issues running DCS using 980m (mobile, with a shitty passmark score ~5k) at 1080p "pancake mode" at mostly high settings. And that card still runs VR "ok" in the sense I'm not using absolutely bottom of the barrel settings. That being said, the thing that amazes me about DCS is that dudes with 2080ti's (14k+ passmark) aren't running that much higher settings than me in VR. But if you get the Ti, you don't have to worry about upgrading it for 2 years.

For the most part its the 0 latency that makes SSD's "fast" not the total throughput which for most read/writes you will almost never see. NVMe is great if you are doing phtoshop on a 30gigapixel photo. But for most day to day stuff, you will barely notice a difference between SATA and NVMe.

I fired up my Rift on my new build only to find out that the Hornet MFDs are unreadable in it.  They are the thick lines that show up when you export the MFDs to an external monitor.

Using the JHMCS with the Rift is pretty sweet though.
