Now I have the optic on I think it might be 1/4” too far forward , but it’s staying where it’s at because that would mean repainting as I painted the mount / optic / rings all at once. So many little gizmos came out of machine shops in the 90s and early 2000s to try and bring capabilities to the M16/M4. Thanks. |

i def like the painted look. I think im gonna rattle can them since they are small and easy. the alum black is ok but that looks decent. i have paint + primer krylon and Ill check satin vs flat to see. I have 1 set of spare caps so ill do them so i have a set ready. Brit |

Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File So I did a thing. After a lot of trial and error I ended up machining the proper radius on the bottom of a #36 weaver base. I also machined a steel backing plate so everything is solid once the screws are torqued. I made the pencil grinder go brrrrr to make everything sit perfect

Into_the_Void did a bunch of delta style gangster grips a few years ago, but they used the aluminum ring and rail grabber. Direct mounting a grip to plastic handguards should be pretty simple, though I’ve never done one. Saw off part of the top so it sits at the correct angle, radius it a bit so it fits snugly on the outside of the little ridges that runs perpendicular to the vent holes. Get a shorter grip screw and run it through the grip and through a vent hole, washer, nut, tighten. If there is room I’d drill a second hole in the grip to prevent potential rotation. Chicago screws might work for that as well. |

Attached File Attached File Here's the one I did for a fellow member awhile back. I cnc cut his. Just made a simple backing plate and a 1/4-20 socket head screw and nut. A dremel would've been easier but my OCD tends to complicate things

Another Weaver #36 base but this one is cut on a 1 degree taper so your light runs parallel to the barrel instead of pointing upwards. Slot is also cut to picatinny specs so the mounting options are endless  Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Turns out it’s a red field base. Just picked another one up on eBay for $10. The radius is pretty close when mounting on the round side of the handguards.

I machined it at work today. The holes line up and put the slot as far forward as possible. I machine a backing plate and use special extended length weaver screws to keep it as retro as possible. You're absolutely right. Here's a well known photo of Dan Schilling with his rotated handguards. I heard it was to keep the heat dissipation to the sides so it doesn't affect aiming but don't quote me on that. Attached File |
