As a Texan that is stationed right down the road from Spearfish I would say yes. The only thing you might not like is the winters. I don't find them too bad but you might. I would come up for a week or two during winter and see for yourself. Besides that I think you would like it.

I will not move back to Texas. I like it up here. Less people and the politics are pretty good and should stay that way for the foreseeable future. Its gun friendly and you can pretty much go shooting anywhere and carry concealed or open anywhere with a few exceptions.

Again wintertime might be rough on you but they are not really that bad.

Yes. Snowfall is higher in the Hills than other parts of the state but winter temps are usually higher as well. Absolutely gorgeous area.

gun law basics? I I have a Texas CHL. I know it's AR Friendly. Mag restrictions?

switch blades legal?

black powder hunting? or do I need a 45/70, or 303/30.06/308?

RENT looks expensive for apartments, come winter,, will I die in a pull behind camper with all the amenities as I'd rather buy something than pay rent?

Your chl is good up here but if you are a perment resident you need to get a SD chl. It costs $10 and you receive it within a few weeks. You can open carry too and the usual places are off limits, schools, bars/casinos and gov buildings and there are no real weapon restrictions on mags. It's like TX.  I'm not into NFA so hopefully somone will chime in on that but I do know you can have them.

I don't BP hunt and hunt with an AR. I sometimes use my 06 when it's windy which is a lot.

And I would not want to live in a camper in the winter. It's warmer in the hills but it will still get below zero.

Auto knives are gtg ballistic knives no.

SD is good to go on any NFA items. I believe that we even passed one of those "preemption" laws on SBRs and cans, but there is no way in hell I would want to test it out. As far as guns go we are one of the best states in the union.

Spearfish is very pretty but it is very steep country and being at the north end of the hills it catches a lot of snow Custer would be my first choice.  Always seems to be warmer there also in the winter.  When we are in Custer for our week of vacation in June it will be hotter then heck in rapid city and cool there.  As a plus it is mot as steep there either and a lot more roads to travel on and land to hunt.

The Hills as we call them enjoy a nicer winter than the state's east side. There can easily be 20, 30 degrees or more warmer than the east during winter. Because of that its known as The Banana Belt...lucky dogs. The Chinook winds will come thru during winter bringing warmth and melt some snow.

I prefer the south part of The Hills. Think that area is prettier. Also its on the opposite end from Sturgis so you don't get as many bikers during Rally Week.

If I can't move to Arizona then next choice would be moving from eastern SD to The Hills.
