I know Century is hit and miss (at best), but I have been interested in getting an Uzi carbine for some reason and I see it is widely available.  Anyone have any experience?

Thanks!

I looked at few of them at the shop I work at and was very tempted. However, it has been hit or miss with most people and these kit guns. A few customers had some firing pin issues that broke and sent them back to century for repair. A few others have had issues with the magazines working and feeding correctly.

Check out the UZI forums and you will see some people think they are great while others have had bad luck.

I passed on it.

Just get a norinco 320. They can be found cheap on gunbroker plus they are preban if you live in a ban state

I have yet to see a decent thread anywhere detailing the quality of the Century Uzis with detailed photographs.  I really like Uzis.  I wanted to buy a Century in November when they were $599 with 7 mags, but since I couldn't find a decent review thread I bought a Vector.  It was awesome fit and finish but it came with a .45 extractor and failed to extract.  A quick call to vector fixed that problem.

I liked it so much, I sent a Form 1 to SBR it.  I also have a full size pistol build in the works.

Here is a pic of my Christmas morning:

I have one.  I believe I bought it sometime last year for about 700 dollars, but I can't recall.  It has been super reliable, no jams or miss feeds.  It groups really well for me, but for some reason it is always about 6 inches below my point of aim at 20 yards.  I had a couple other people shoot it and they were on target with slightly larger groups so I just assume it is something with me and my sight picture.  Aside from it weighting way more than I thought it would, it has been a great gun and I nearly always bring it along with me to the indoor range.  I hate loading it, so I may end up getting a lula for it one of these days.  Is there any detailed pictures that you want of it?  I'm not a professional photographer but I can take whatever photo you would like of it.

I'd just like to see some general pictures.  All the pics I have been able to find are stock photos.  I'm not (yet) very experienced with Uzis, but I would like to be.

Well like I said, I'm not a great photographer, but here are some photos I snapped.  If you need anything specific, let me know.  Mine is in the 700 serial number range.  The only other uzi I have ever handled was a full auto one and to be honest I couldn't really tell a huge difference between the two other than his was way more fun.

Thanks for the pics. Does the bolt have a fully supported lip, or is the bottom of the bolt face milled away?

It's been ground down.  There is still a little bit of a lip there, but nothing like how a full auto bolt is.

I bought one last March, sbr'd it. Waited for Gemtech to get Uzi mounts back in stock(first week of January). Shot it yesterday for the first time, very disappointed. Had multiple ftf, light pimer strikes, just all around pain in the ass. Now, I get to become an Uzi gunsmith...

Anybody know if you can replace the wood stocks on these Centurions w/ an original folding stock? Any technical or legal (parts count) reasons why you couldn't?

I picked up this Century UC-9 "UZI" Carbine (mid-1200 serial) the day before yesterday and took it to my range this last morning.

First off I got it lightly used from a friend in a trade so I was able to examine it 1st hand. I used to have a Norinco UZI but I could never get used to the retarded way it looked with a folding stock and long barrel. At least this one looks a bit better in my eyes with a wood stock. It feels much better against the shoulder too. I don't plan on a SBR so that's important to me.

Sadly my friend decided it would be a good idea to paint the grip/fore-end a crappy gloss forest green. Rather than try to get the paint off I just repainted them satin brown to sorta-kinda match the stock.

Any-hoo I loaded up the four mags I got with it with 30 rounds each, one mag of brass-cased 115gr Geco and three mags of steel-cased 115gr Wolf Military Classic and headed to the range.

I ran the brass-cased Geco first and it ran fine with one FTF about mid-mag. It ate the Wolf like candy no matter how fast I pulled the trigger. The last mag of Wolf I used to shoot it for accuracy at 50 yards. Not bad but I guess I'll have to invest in a UZI Type-A sight tool to move it over a bit.

When I cleaned it I did not note any issues. I'm pretty pleased with it so far.

I'm glad there are some good posts in this thread as it seems every time someone mentions the UC-9 on the more UZI oriented forums you hear grand-standing from non-UC-9 owners about how they should have bought UZI brand X or Y instead of the UC-9. Then there are the "Century builds crap" posts. It's good to hear from other owners of the UC-9 good or bad. Back-seaters are a dime a dozen.

Save your pennies and get one. I originally wanted a Kel Tec, but it seems that they were made out of pure unobtainium as I could not find one for sale in PA or any of the big distributors. It's always best to have a fall back position, So I bought an Uzi. Century was quoting me $999, and Vector was quoting $850. With the extra money I saved I bought a LOT of magazines for it.

They're nice guns, but a bit heavy for what they are. Also the sights are some what crude, but not out of line for a military weapon. Now I just need to get the paperwork back on it. I submitted my form 1 on September 4, 2011. Sadly nothing so far, just "PENDING".

J&G and other distributors have them (wood stocked) for $759.00 and that has been the price for quite some time unless they were on special. $60.00 less for a folder.

Those pictures show exactly what I saw when I handled one.  The "pawl" that holds the barrel nut on is loose.  On a IMI Uzi that piece is captive.  On a century you can easily lose that piece.  Then you can lose the headspacing or have a loose barrel.

Its only loose when you take the barrel out, how often you removing your barrel?   When I SBRed my Century Uzi I threaded the barrel to 1/2 x 28 and leave the barrel in place.

Well I guess you could "lose" the barrel and nut too if you were that careless as the paw and spring is not exactly a small part.

Not wanting to go the SBR route (much less spring for a can) I just got a fake IDF-style two-stage can to cover-up the 16" barrel.

For what they are it's a top-notch product. It's made of solid nylon except for the embedded UZI barrel nut and only weighs a half pound or so.  They look pretty good as is but you could paint it if you want. Odd but in-hand it does not look to be made of nylon at all.

There is a guy over in UZI-Talk's for-sale forum making and selling them. No reports of melting issues and he's been making them since 2005. Free replacement guarantee.

Well, I bought one of these a couple of days ago off of GB.  It should be in my FFL's hands in a couple of days.  When I get back from this deployment and go on post-deployment block leave in April I will get it out and see how it does.  When I do I will leave a post here with my impressions.  I did have a IMI MOD B UZI that I traded about 20yrs ago.  I have wanted a replacement every since I traded it off.  Finally getting around to getting one.  I will see how this compares the my memories of that long gone MOD B.

You always hear 10 time more bad reports than good ones, that's just the way people are.  I have a IMI model A and it has never let me down. If the builder will fix any problems you have GO FOR IT. The only difference I can see is cost. But if I wanted a group, vecter or what ever and it was in my price range it would'nt stop me !!!!  But an IMI will hold it's value. Trying to post a positive post even tho I am an IMI snob. I have seen a Group at a gun show for $1600.00 (I think he won't have any takers on that one)

Cyclic,

I too agree that the stock sights kind of suck. It would be nice to put a RDS on it, but right now, I'm looking for a can for it. I saw one from Gemtech that simply replaces the barrel nut. I doubt it'll be as quiet as the can on yours, though. Just out of curiosity, how quiet are those cans? I'd like to bust some bunnies in the back yard, but don't want to piss off the neighbors doing it. Now if I can just figure out a way to mount the bayonet with the can, things will be golden.

Link Posted: 4/8/2012 4:49:16 PM EDT

Not really sure just how quiet it is, I'm having a hard time finding some sub-sonics in 9mm. The Bowers cans are good performers for the price. They are also a little big, but they definitely work well. I used to run it on my M11/9 subgun, but I figured the Uzi platform will work better me.

I just got back and had a chance to inspect my Century UC9.  I have not had a chance to get any range time with it, yet.  During my inspection I found one issue with it.  The safety selector will go a little ways past fire.  This results in the striker not dropping when the trigger is pulled.  I have contacted Century and they are sending me a return slip as I am typing this.  Hopefully they will get it fixed in a timely manner.  I must add that the lady I spoke to at Century was VERY helpful and friendly.

I went with a similar setup from a vendor I knew a little better (m60joe)

http://users.zoominternet.net/~m60/uzi_top_cover_optic_rails.htm

Get ready to be really excited, its a great addition to one of  thegreatest SBR's ever.

I went with a short rail on a new top cover that co-witnesses with my model A sights. The mounting point on the top cover  isn'tan issue in teh slightest, it holds zero perfectly, every time.

Then what I did after disabling the ratchet since mines is a semi, was ordered a second set of rear aps. (I have a very low serial number and even though I shoot it I try to keep whatever is original and can be fitted with a spare off the gun. The best setup fo me was to keep teh 100m apeture and then drill out the 200m a little bit to make use of the red dot easier. The thing shoots like a dream, like your playing a video game.

double taps 32 rounds long all in a tight group COM is no problem, its addicting as hell.

I've been kicking around the idea of buying an Uzi and SBR'ing it or buying a dedicated 9mm AR and SBR'ing it.
The Uzi will be cheaper than the AR, (DDLES Glock Mag lower) but I've got ALOT of familiarity with AR platform.
Between the Marines and being the Department AR15 armorer, I'm very comfortable with the AR platform, the Uzi, not so much.
I have actually held one once...never fired one though.

The purpose behind the gun would be two-fold:

1..Fun to shoot
2..Possible HD gun if the wife is comfortable with it.

It will be SBR'd..
Both are blowback so that isnt a deciding factor.....

One of the main things IMO is whether or not Century or Vector Uzi's are worth SBR'ing. I dont want to spend the money to SBR what basically amounts to being a Vulcan or a Hesse AR with regards to a Century or Vector and I know the supply of IMI Uzi's is beginning to dry up......

Hope that all makes sense....

Just for fun here is the 10.5" AR and 10.2" Uzi
ETA: cans are Gemtech Multimount on the AR and Gemtech Trinity on the Uzi
The Gemtect cans use the same adapters so I picked up Uzi and 3 lug mounts,1/2X28 .1/2X36 endcaps and LID boosters for each over the years as gemtech had various sales. The Uzi is more quiet but I shoot the AR a little better;Just decide which one you want FIRST.

Yes it is,
I think that's why I took the pic of them together to show the difference in stocks.
The Uzi is a Vector on Group industries Rec .
Whatever you get, always 1 Function test 2 engrave and 3 file form one with batfe.
The Uzi started as a pistol and then I just added the 15.00 stock when my form 1 came back approved.

cyclic, did you happen to get a chance to do the jb-weld/saran wrap improvement as well yet? If not,  you should. It takes about 2 minutes and is incredibly easy and really sets the cover up to be rock solid. I'm getting absolutely no loss of zero after repeated removal of teh cover and reatachment at 100 yards with the same fastfire. Whether the cover is really a lot less of a stability issue than people assume or whether its the 'custom seat' you can creat for it using the epoxy, somethign is keeping my incredibly reliable.

also the fastfire is a truly awesome optic for the price.

ATTN: Century owners.

I just bought a carbine today off a member local to me, took it home and as I suspected would be the case I was having failures to feed from the first few rounds in the magazine.

So since I have a metric shit ton of Uzi parts I tore into it and I found some interesting things.

1. The extractor on my IMI semi bolt is ten times as beefy as the Century UC-9 extractor.  I also noticed that the century extractor is weaker. So I replaced that.
2. The semi sear feet are digging into the receiver somehow. I replaced the lower with a German DES lower, and smoothed over the rough areas.
3. The bolt is drastically different from the IMI semi bolt. to the extent that an IMI pattern bolt will not fit in the Century gun. the biggest difference is on the rear where the firing pin channel is. On an IMI there's a spring loaded wedge, on the Century there's two bars welded in.
4. The feed ramp out of the box was gritty, and seemed to be over coated in whatever they're putting on these guns. I polished that just in case it might be causing problems.

After I replaced the extractor, lower, and polished the feed ramp the gun runs like a top.

That is in keeping with what Century did to mine when I sent it in.
