Need to buy some 5.45 x 39mm magazines for my Sporter AK-74. They used to be dirt cheap but those days are gone.
I wanted to get Russian made magazines but they are a bit pricy. My question is - what brands should I buy and what brands should I stay away from? Can you recommend a reputable seller? I found Tapco mags for $15.99. Are they any good? I don't mind paying more for quality but $50 per mag is prohibitively expensive.

SGAmmo. $ 35 ish. Cheapest 5.45 reliable mags. You're welcome.
Edit: Cheap mags are cheap for a reason. Never forget that. Second edit: Russian plums are the best 5.45 mags you can get your hands on. Period. |

I have East German Bakelites, many colors of the Bulgarian steel lined poly mags, and a few all steel polish Tantal mags. The Bulgarians seem to be the best value for the money but, they aren't as cheap as they used to be. Look for double circle 10, 21, and 24 Mold marks. they came in black, and about three shades of red/brown

i've bought a few from Robertrtg.com and the $40 tula's were pretty nice. also bought some of the $30 izhmash that's out of stock and they were ok, surface rust on all metal reinforcements and lugs, but otherwise good shape.

I've always found the Tapco mags to be quite durable for all poly mags, and their pricepoint certainly makes them attractive. You can easily get 2-3 Tapcos for every surplus mag...and unless you plan on running super intense carbine courses or taking your rifle to war anytime soon, the Tapcos will be just fine.
