Just bought 12 mags from sportsmans guide. Appear to be all new but covered in cosmoline. What's the best way to clean these up?

Couldn't beat $13 a piece... Found them from a link somewhere in the Ak forum.

Take them apart, soak in mineral spirits for a couple hours to soften the cosmo, clean and dry.

Disassemble.
Heat to 170 degrees.
Cosmoline will turn to thin liquid.
Wipe off residue.

The military method was to use a large vat of hot water.
Most folks don't want to mess with that.

Thanks folks. Never had to mess with cosmoline. Will try mineral spirits first.

WD-40 works as well as mineral spirits.

It still helps a lot to warm-up the mags before you mess with any of it.

Step 1: disassemble and clean with rags and toothbrush

Step 2: buy an aluminum cooking pan ($4 at Walmart) about the size that you would cook a turkey in

Step 3: boil hot water, leave for 30 minutes, remove from bath, wipe clean and allow them to dry

Step 4: light coat of CLP and reassemble

If there's rust here's what I've done:

Step 3A: get a 5 gallon bucket from Home Depot, get enough white wine vinegar to submerge the rusted parts
Step 3B: check on them every 12 hours - remove when rust (and paint) is gone
Step 3C: Hot water bath to clean off the vinegar - boil for 30 minutes
Step 3D: Remove from water bath, quick dry with a rag, submerge in paint thinner in order to deactivate the vinegar so it doesn't continue to eat the metal
Step 3E: Wait 15-30 minutes, quick dip in water to displace the paint thinner - let dry
Step 3F: A light coat of rust will hit immediately, buff off with 0000 Steel wool
Step 3D: Paint and wait

oven cleaner and warm water works well too if you've got it handy.

APEX was selling 10 for 90$ over the weekend

Dawn dish detergent and hot water. Scrubs right off.

Spray Goo Gone over parts after disassembly, let sit for five to ten minutes and wipe. Minimal elbow grease.

Break cleaner works very well and it's easy to just run to walmart or the auto store and grab a can.

This is the answer. 2 minutes, & its done. No oven, no dishwasher, just $3 & 2 minutes per mag including dis/reassembly.  GARY

That's what I've used (and on the same SG Yugo mags OP bought, too). Just spray and wipe with rags inside and out. Then I coat everything with CLP and reassemble.

I got an old aluminum pan and filled it with enough mineral spirits to cover the mags.  Let it sit in the hot sun for about 30 minutes and then wiped off with some old rags and a old paintbrush.

Came right off no problem.

I went with aluminum pan and mineral spirits. Pain in the a**. Finished off with wd40 and rags....

The cosmoline was very thick on the mags....

For those of you who went the oven route, did it smell up your oven/house?

Seems like the best route, but I don't want to contaminate the oven or piss off the wife unit.

Anxious to get these puppies prepped!

Those are not surplus and thus not cosmolined.  They should have light oil so are GTG after a wipe down of the heavy areas.

wait for a 100 degree day, let them roast in the sun, wipe the vast majority of the gunk off, then use brake cleaner, gas, whatever you have laying around.
