Anyone have a Wilton 6" Shop Vise? Shopping around and considering this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004XPVO?tag=wmtogr-20&th=1

Concerned about some of the stuff I've read that if you don't by an American Made Wilton it'll be crap. I'd love to buy an American made Vise but their way out of my range unless someone has another recommendation?

Thanks

I have an US made vise similar to that. It has  had 15 years of abuse.  I would save up for the US made version. Chinese steel is still Chinese steel. You can give your kids a good vice when your gone. I have a Chas Parker vise that is 35-40. My grandkids will get to use it when I'm gone.

Most of the Wilton's are now Chinese made --I think... I bought one a few years ago on eBay and what junk -returned it...

Might be better to just buy a good Chinese vise [I have some, they're around] and save the [phony] COST of the Wilton Brand Name.

OR, keep your eye's open on eBay and Craig's list for a quality USED AMERICAN made vise ---ANY brand...

Even the big old Craftsman's were good...

Parts are available for many American vices, jaws, etc...

Found this: http://www.yostvises.com/6-1-2-multi-purpose-reversible-combination-vise-swivel-base.html

Yost 865-DI's are apparently made in the USA and about $265.00 when looking around... too good to be true?

I have that same one. I have had no problems with it but I only paid $40 new with brass jaw inserts off of craiglist.

There are a couple old Craftsman vises on Craigslist in my area. I'd only really need one for the occasional gunsmithing duty. Should I get one?

Have some old Wiltons at work that are beat on daily. They are great.

I bought one of those Chinese Wiltons 10 or 12 years ago.It is till intact, even after some downright abuse.I just took it apart last week and cleaned/greased it.I believe I gave around $65 for it.

That'd be great!

Also thinking about the Yost 204: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Yost-4-in-Heavy-Duty-Machinists-Vises-Swivel-Base-204/202786316 (also made in the USA)

I have had my Craftsman for 35 years.  The older ones hold up well, and don't command the higher prices of the collector brands.

Truth.

I inherited this USA made 6" Craftsman in 1976.  It was already well-used.  The soft jaw inserts are the only thing Welton.

These old Chaftsman vices are widely available and inexpensive.  Why buy Chinese steel with these around?

I just bought a Snap On vise, which is really a Wilton. I own some Japanese, Chinese Craftsman, and US made Craftsman vises. The Wilton is really nice.

Most Wilton's are still made in the US. There are, however, some Wilton vises made in China. It will be obvious by the price and the big 'ol "Made in USA" cast into the vise.

If you can spend the $600+ on the Wilton you should go for it.
