Just finished putting together another rifle.  Tourqed the nut put the gas system on(mfr dimpled barrel).  Then I toss a bcg in it and I get a nice clang from the gas tube, but it has no issues seating.  The barrel nut is for a free float system that does not require it to be timed.  I'm pretty sure the tube is just rattling against the upper....it's not a big deal, but anyone got any ideas to quiet it down?

Sounds like your bolt carrier key is hitting the gas tube when going into battery.  Easy to check and easy to fix.

Break it open and slowly slide the carrier into the upper receiver.  If it goes all the way to bolt lock up and you felt nothing rubbing or hitting, it's not the gas tube hitting the key.

It goes in nicely...it's a rifle length gas tube so I think it's moving around in the slot in the upper

I have heard of a similar complaints of a "rattle" with barrel nuts that do not touch the gas tube. I have never used a handguard that uses that kind of barrel nut, but it makes sense to me that it could/would. I think your analogy is correct. To check you could remove the handguard and ligtly wedge a tapered punch between the gas tube and the upper, then check for rattle. If it's gone it was either the tube rattling or the handguard.

Some free float rails have a harmonic "ping" when you close the bolt and aren't touching the rail.

I have not run into what you are describing with my barrel nuts that don’t require indexing.
Which would incline me to suspect gas tube alignment.

maybe...but it is a mfr dimpled barrel and matching block and when you look down it it looks dead straight.  i doubt its a functional issue just annoying

No matter how straight it looks it is not unusual for gas tubes to need to be tweaked a little to get the least amount of contact with the key.

The gas tubes float.
Moving the carrier in and out should not cause the gas tube to move unless it is not aligned properly.
