I'm thinking of doing a x39 build. Using a 16" carbine length barrel.
What parts would be recommended, such as gas block/tube, handguard, BCG and mags. I understand the rest of the parts are the same or work and I understand the problems or possible problems with feed ramps, but really need advice on the gas block and tube and matching with a free float/keymod type handguard.

Go with a lower that accepts AK mags, like cmmg or a PSA lower. It will save you a lot in sweat and blood.

I've read about the problems or non problems with the x39 mags that are out there. I'd rather not get an x39 specific lower since it's easier to mill out a standard 80%.
I'll look into that type lower though and give it some thought.

I am getting a Faxon 16" barrel (midlength though) from AIM that is set up for the included pinned on Faxon low profile gas block. (ordered last Friday)

Then I am planning on a UTG Pro Super Slim handguard. (ordering this Friday)

The Faxon has a low profile gas block and the UTG says it is for a low profile gas block so I am thinking in theory that should be good to go.

I have a generic CMMG midlength gas tube.

C Products mags are supposed to the be the way to go, I have a couple of them for the big day when I get this thing together.

My first 7.62x39 build was made using a Model 1 Sales barrel and an MGI super bolt and firing pin. Everything else was standard AR stuff and it ran like a raped ape. I had the USA 20 rd franken mags. This a few years before C Products made their x39 mags.

ok. Thank you guys.
That Aim barrel looks pretty good. I'll have to go through figuring out how I want it to look and what I want to use.
A modular receiver would be awesome but it's a bit pricey. I think I'd rather do some work on feedramps and mags rather than go that route.
Or if I go 5.45 since I have a few cans of that sitting around, how does 5.45 fit and feed from standard 5.56 mags?

My dad has a CMMG Mutant. It only has 595 rounds through it (he has documented every round) and he now has 21 (most different) mags he is testing with the gun. Long story short, my home brew x39 AR-15 seems a bit more reliable with CPD mags than the Mutant so far. This is only a sample size of one so your mileage may vary.

For a 7.62x39 build, I'll differ from others and say:
Go with Faxon mid length (gas) 16" barrel, Anderson stripped upper
Have it F2 pinned by "Top notch top ends" ($60/which includes F2 FSB/cap/delta ring)
Aim 7.62x39 Nitride BCG
and use CPD 28 (or 30) round mags.
There's absolutely NO reason to use AK mags (unless you have a crap load of them already), since they are a problem of themselves (too much variance of fit, etc).
I'd HUGELY prefer a mag well (which an AR47 will provide) vs the sloppy AK mag fit style.
AK mags = sloppy fit, no LRHO, etc. AR47 (CPD) mags = consistent fit, LRBHO, etc and the ability to use any mil spec AR lower. That's a "no brainer" for me.

I was on the fence about a KS47 lower (uses AK mags) until I realized how frustrated I was with the variance of AK mag fit and realized how well an AR mag well stabilizes just about any mag. Now I have ZERO interest in anything that uses AK mags.

If you don't already have that barrel, don't get it...go with a mid-length Faxon, ARP, or Black Rifle Arms (made by Ballistic Advantage)...the mid-length uppers I have built have been easier to tune for proper function than the carbines I've tried.

Thats been my limited experience (a dozen or so) but I won't build an x39 in a carbine length unless its a pistol or SBR.

I'm assuming easier for the gas system.
No, I have no parts for this one yet. Still need to do a little reading on building a 5.45 and decide which route to go. Probably 7.62x39.
I do appreciate the recommendations.

If you're not going to go the NFA route then get a 16" mid.  If you're going to build a pistol or SBR then get a 7-8" barrel.  That's what I'm doing for one of my BRS-47 lowers.

I think I'd enjoy a 7.62 x 39 more. So, I'll go with that and start looking at parts. Mid length gas system.
I have a lower receiver ready to go but need to finish up an AK63D first. Thanks for the advice.

Cycles snap caps like a dream.  I want to check headspace before I shoot it yet but it is flawless so far.

Hey 85-Ranger,
How about a range report on that 762X39 upper?

I have a LMT bolt for a pistol. They are supposed to be the best for longevity with X39, but also the most expensive.
Also have a Buffalo bolt, but haven't tried it yet so the jury is still out.

Using a PSA bolt and extended firing pin, here. No issues as of yet.
