I know its preferred, but why not just put it in a vice and be careful not to mar the rail and torque it slowly off?

I dont even think my local smiths with remove the barrel - i called two and they just walk it around back and vice the gun rail and all. I'd feel better using my builders kit and carefully doing that myself.

Would it hurt the gun at all? 1st time trying.

Its a daniel defense ddm4 mk18 10.3 inch upper and a ddm4 mk12 18 inch upper. So one doesnt have barrel to hold onto and the other is an spr so barrel harm would be a major drag.

Thanks

Put the exposed bbl in the vice.  Is your bbl 14.5" or 16"?

A picture of your upper would help.  Clamping down the end of the barrel would be best.

You could break the indexing pin or upper receiver trying to wrench it off with the upper receiver in a vise.

I have two uppers. A 10.3 inch with no ability to grab the barrel.

Then an 18 inch barrel.

The exact uppers are the mk18 and mk12 uppers on daniel defense ddm4's. And much appreciation for your help guys - I cant thank you enough as i havent done work on them before.

The 10.3" you'll want to remove the rail, so the bbl can go into the vise.  The bbl is steel.  Your upper is aluminum.  On which part to you wish to apply torque?

Take the rail off and do it correctly, or you may wind up making a very expensive mistake, all it takes is a slip in the wrong way and you will ruin the rail.

Will do. I'll take your advice.

A lot of bad things can happen. You can unscrew the barrel from the extension. You can bend the barrel. You can bend or damage your upper or rail, depending on how you are going to clamp it. I learned the hard way, now I buy the right tools and do it right.

Barrel in vise always for muzzle device install/uninstall.  The amount of exposed barrel will dictate if you need to remove handguard or not.

Pro-tip: http://www.instructables.com/id/AR-15M16-barrell-vise-block/?ALLSTEPS  I lined mine with gaffers tape and it works like an absolute charm.
