I'm sure, at some point, we've all had warm hands (support hand barehanded or gloved) while rapid firing our AR's. Yes, wearing (thicker) gloves and utilizing polymer hand guards/rail panels (on your MLok/Keymod handguard) may decrease some heat transfer, especially near the gas block and muzzle.

I have a thought though:

Why not utilize high temp (engine) paint internally and/or externally on your handguard? And/Or even the barrel itself?

It may provide some additional protection from heat transfer to your hands. Any thoughts? Has someone done this here yet?

I appreciate any insight.

Hi temp paint only withstands...wait for it...hi temps.  It doesn't prevent the transfer of the heat.

E.g. you can put it on a charcoal grill to make the paint job last longer, but the metal surface still gets just as hot as before.

High temp paint also tends to flake off of plastic.

This is because the paint usually has some form of ceramic hardener and the plastic under it will flex while the paint does not.

You know what doesn't get all that hot?
Plastic handguards with heat shields...

Even if you could insulate the barrel effectively, you'd be trading comfort for the well being of the barrel. Hot barrels shoot worse and wear faster.

He's sort of on to something here. If you were to paint the inside of the hand guard with a silver or white ceramic based paint it would reduce the amount of heat transferred into the hand guard. ceramic on the outside of the guard would reduce the transfer from the inside to the outside.
wrapping the portion you hold with something like DEI header wrap would work as well, not the entire length of the guard or you'd never cool off the barrel.if you were going to be in a situation where you couldn't sit it down for a while and had to keep firing, carbine course type situation i guess.

my 10.5" w/ 11" vtac takes a while to heat up. i grab that bitch right around the gas block bare handed too.....

Flame Resistant gloves work very well if worn.

A vertical grip and/or a bipod seem to keep the heat away from my hand pretty well.

It doesn't appear to be. (I was a distributor for them for YEARS)

Never had any issues with the 30's, now the 20's were a different story.

The 30's were designed and developed by Matt Cammenga. His father sold the business, the new owner decided he no longer needed Matt or John III.

At that point I dropped them.

The Cammenga family is now operating as "The White River Knifes" and "Cammo Brothers". They are GOOD people.

Interesting, thanks.  Don;t see too many curved metal 20rders which is why I wondered.
I only have one 20rd Cammenga but it has always worked fine.

Just ensure the ventilation is the same, the barrel will not get hotter than normal.

The primary method of heat removal is convection, heavy insulation will prevent heat transfer due to radiation, but that is a minor mode of heat transfer from the barrel.

If you want to really keep things cool figure a way to improve air flow over the barrel, the Lewis LMG had a very good method....

Just grab a pot holder out of the kitchen, call it a Tactical Heat Mitigating Device and you will be fine.

Thanks for all the interesting ideas and insight. I'm glad we could have a well thought out, informative, and intelligent conversation about this.
