When I first seen the Battle Arms PDW lower i knew i wanted to make a bad ass sbr out of it. I've always liked how the AK47 sbr's looked so my plan was to incorporate some of the wood features from the Ak's. This is still a work in progress . I have taken a Executive ordnance grip and i've made some new scales out of Zebra wood, although i should of chosen a easier wood to work with because this stuff is brittle in certain areas. It will all be resin reinforced when completed so i have to worries on strength. Enjoy

Scales without finish or drilled holes

Cheek rest prior to wood veneer, i made a new cheek rest out of stainless steel sheet metal because the stock was too thick. It would of interfered with the charging handle. Plus this came out way stronger.

Grip and cheek rest complete minus the finish on the wood.

I chopped up a Fortis Switch rail to 7.5" i still need to make the lower wood part that will attach to this rail and cover up the front cut portion. Machining to match the B.A.D. upper will also be done.

Thanks for the kind words! I've worked with metal for a long time and i'm just now getting into wood. It's a lot easier to shape so i was itching for a chance to play with it again.

Made some progress on the handguard today.

Milled part of the picatinny off and added m-lok, added the channel to match the B.A.D. upper and milled a small cut right above the Fortis logo to better match the lines on the upper. The upper is just a mock up from another build. I still need to order one, so hopefully they are the same. lol

The ar's with wood always looked retarded to me,, like putting wood or steel on a glock.. But this is the first AR with wood incorporated into it and it looks beautiful! Good job!

Old school Tag, I drooled over this thing since I saw the first pics of it, I didn't know you used a veneer instead of a solid piece of wood for the stock though.

Thank you, there's no room for a thick piece of wood there without causing interference with the charging handle when charging the weapon. This way allowed me to have a even stronger cheek rest and have the real wood. If i had veneered over the stock kydex plastic i would of also had interference with the charging handle.

I like how the upper and lower have the stamped metal look.  Combined with the wood, it looks like the offspring of an STG-44.

Damn, that's awesome looking.   Did you choose zebra wood for the looks of was there some other reason?

It was the sexiest wood that i saw at the lumber store that day.lol (pain in the ass wood to work with) Also the only one that i could find thick enough to make the handguard piece out of one piece. I am currently making another one with better wood and i'll be able to be more creative with the handguard piece which was my original intention but was restrained by the size of the wood.

Dang!  You did a real nice job with that one OP!

He made/modified these from stock parts, so unless you have a ton of skill or the OP wants to sell sets of it, nowhere.

This one is truly bad ass. The handguard has a whole Thompson-esque look about it. The gun would be sweet as it sits, the wood is the cherry. Hard to integrate wood and an AR, but this one nails it. Good work OP.

That is so stinking sweet! I might even go as far as calling it sexy.

The only bad thing about it is that seeing this makes me want to do something with some antler...... So many ideas, so little time.

Deer antler stinks so bad when working with it, and whatever grinding tools you use on it continue to stink every time you use them after that. Unless you change the wheels or belts. Other than that it looks great.

Antler can also smell terrible if it gets wet too.

I would rather keep it made of aluminum. All the parts i made can break and fall off and the rifle will keep running, the lower would be a disaster. It would need reinforcements made of metal in the buffer tube area and probably on all the pin holes depending on what wood species is used. Wood also like to break along the grain lines so certain areas like the magwell would probably be really weak or overly big to keep it strong.
