Hey guys

I'm building a rifle and this time I'm assembling the upper myself as well.

I purchased a barrel with a .223 Wylde chamber.

What go / no go gauges do I get for a .223 Wylde?

Thanks

I just went through the same thing. I ordered .223 Wylde headspace gauges from Midway. I also saw one of the reviews for them on Midway that was written by the man who made the .223 Wylde and he said there is no need to use anything other than .223 Remington headspace gauges. Just so happened when I ordered them from Midway all that was available was the .223 Wylde gauges. Everything worked fine for me.

The way the chamber is cut at the leade / throat has no basis on how headspace is measured. Which is from the bolt-face to the 0.330" datum line of the case / chamber shoulder for 223 REM / 5.56 MM.

If you are using a Wylde Chamber, my recommendation is a 1.4636" Go Gauge, and a 1.4666" No-Go Gauge.

1.4636" is the minimum headspace SAAMI specifies, and 1.4666" is the maximum length SAAMI specifies for cartridges from the bolt-face to the 0.330" datum line on the case's shoulder.

It's hard to screw up really. However my first build I used a .223 Wylde from Rainier Arms and took it to my local smith and he checked it and it was fine.

I use a SAAMI .223 Remington Go and a Colt 5.56 NATO field.

No special headspace gauges are necessary for the Wylde chamber.   Common .223 Remington gauges will suffice.

I noted yesterday that one reamer manufacturer has made minor changes to my original chamber design, but is calling what they manufacture a Wylde .223 reamer..  That being the case, why didn't they attach their own name to it?  It is all about money today and the name attachment is all you are getting.  My name should have never cost the builder/owner/shooter an extra dime, as it was my gift to the shooting world.

Talk about "the final word".
Thank you Mr. Wylde for all that you do.

Wow! Thanks for responding?  I read while researching that your in IL.  Since I'm also in IL, I was wondering how a guy could reach you in regards to questions concering headspace on a 223 wylde barrel I bought....and here you are.  Thanks!

I have another question for you if you read this thread again...

How much of a difference should their be in the gauge measurments?  From what I've seen online is not everyones no-go gauges is the same.  What is the minimum and maximum safe range?  I used a 1.4636 Go gauge and a 1.4666 no go gauge and the bolt closed on the no-go gauge. I tried two different bolts.

Thanks again!

I'm afraid I can't be much help with the headspace situation.  If the barrel has excessive headspace, you can return it.  There is not much you can do personally without proper knowledge and lots of equipment.  If the problem is that you don't trust your headspace gauges, return them to the maker and have them checked.

Building ARs has, in recent years, become a table top operation.  If your intention is to build your own rifles, make sure your basic tools and hardware are of known quality.

Sorry that I cannot be of more help.
