I have the YHM-9383 gas block. Do I need to dimple the barrel?

And its simple to do. You need a drill, the appropriate size drill bit and modicum of skill.

I dimpled mine. Here is my mechanical thinking for my decision to do it. If the gas block comes loose a little, the dimpling will most likely keep the gas block in place if I notice it soon enough.  Having the set screw in a small recess will not allow the gas block to rotate or slide forward.

I've seen dimple kits out there too, I think Rainier had them.

Ive never dimpled one..........and have used about 6 or so, set-screw type gas blocks without issues...........I red Loctite them and that's it...........

I sent an email to Mas Defense asking if their barrels were dimpled and if not , did they offer that service. They quickly replied that they do not dimple the hundreds of uppers they assemble each month.

If the setscrews for your block are hard and sharp enough, it's not needed to secure the block.  But it does help with getting the block aligned in the first place.  My last upper build uses a setscrew gas block and the barrel was already dimpled - it went together really easily and without any of the fumbling I had with my last (clamped) gas block build.  In the future, if the barrel I use for a setscrew block isn't dimpled, I WILL dimple it.

Have the gas block pinned & you wont have to worry about it

Is it necessary?  Not if failure is an option.  I'm sure there are more out there NOT dimpled than are. If its not fully covered and protected by the handguard or you may ever have to trust your life to it, then absolutely.  Better option is to pin it.  Otherwise, it may or may not slip and may or may not work.

I've watched some cool 1,000 round torture tests on YouTube. The weakest links become evident. Yes 1,000 consecutively fired rounds is overkill in order to prove reliability for most people's recreational AR. Pinned + set screws + dimpled gas blocks don't move. Dimpled would probably be 2nd best. Set screws alone would probably be 3rd. Clamp on blocks would probably be 4th.

Just do what you feel is right for you.
