is that a rail height gas block your using with the SL handguard?
if so, how the hell did you get the handguard on!?
i did a budget Christmas build for my dad and couldn't for the life of me get it to work, so I gave up and got a low pro railed gas block, and it was still a pain.

Yes, it's a rail height gas block.  I had to do a little fine trimming on the handguard.  I started with a sanding drum on the Dremel and finished with a fine hand file.  It's not perfect, but it's not meant to be a safe queen.

Hi there, a little back story on this build, it's the only one i have pictures of at the moment, I'm from alaska and all of my other rifles are there still, been in missouri for almost a year, with the previous 2 before that in Boston MA. 8 months ago I started piecing together parts to build a rifle, bought a lower and started collecting parts as I found them at a decent price, with black friday finishing it off for me under 400$ without mags or the scope. Aero lower, CMMG BCG, anderson charging handle, ptac slick side upper/stainless heavy barrel 16", troy backup rear iron sight. "custom" extended hand rail on mid length gas system. magpul ACS stock, Firefield 1.5-5 scope. and 5 Lancer 30 round mags.

Buttstock is a Tactical Intent TI-7, sold as a Damage Industries E.C.S., in SHTF Brown. I love the stock, but I kinda regret the color now.  I bought it because the idea of having a stock that was basically called 'shit brown' tickled me, but now that I have the whole gun together, I kinda wish I'd gone with an OD or Foliage green color.  Of course, I'm planning on rattlecanning the whole thing, maybe I'll be lazy and rattlecan just the stock instead

Light is a Fenix E12.  The electrical tape and cable ties don't work very well, so will probably get replace either with a couple hose clamps or a proper 3/4" mount.
I did indeed swap out the DD 1.5 rear sight for a UTG A2 style.  That may seem like a step backwards, but I really prefer having elevation adjustment at the rear.  Especially since I am using a HIVIZ fiber optic front sight, which I don't recommend.  It's really no improvement in terms of visibility over a standard front post.
VTAC sling is kludged on there pending drilling and pinning the FSB and installation of the front sling swivel.  It does work though.
I also remembered to install the port door while I had the barrel nut off this time

dumped 3 mags thru it, didn't even get hot. I know that's not a lot, but I'm sure it will handle anything I can muster. Plus if it melts, it will give the stick character . But @ $35 shipped, who cares lol. I'll buy a few extra

I gave it a shot and built it myself.
The lower is from a local gun shop. CMMG lower parts kit, generic 6 position stock. Upper is a Palmetto State blemished. Without magazines I am in it for just under $450. Still got a few things to pick up but I'm pleased and I learned a lot.

Just finished my stripped Anderson lower assembly. Went pretty easy. Don't have any punches, so used a pair of well taped pliers to install the rollpins. A little CLP and they went in fairly easy. Found that a "Pilot G2 07" ink pin cartridge is the perfect size for retaining the front pivot spring and detent pin in their proper place while inserting the pivot pin in, just pushes it back out the other side.

Overall the instructions here helped out a bunch. I was a little nervous about it, but it went easier then I thought. This is my first AR15 since I had, and sold, a Bushmaster many years ago. Figured I'd get another while the getting is good. Originally total cost was right below $500 shipped for the upper and lower, and the transfer fee for the lower, but the Magpul SL handguard pushed it slightly over that amount. Already had the Grip and stock on my 15-22, but swapped it's furniture back to factory stuff. So now I have a cheap grip, stock, and quad rail from the upper kit sitting around for the next one.

Got to the range to try it out about an hour ago. Went with a 50/200 zero using the large aperture...My old eyes need more light. Rear sight just needed one right click off center to get windage, and two clicks up on the front sight for elevation, not too bad in my opinion. Went through 100rnds of Federal FMJ (Wally World bulk pack). Only malfunction was on the last mag (PMags), last round...a grain of sand was stuck in a little grove on the follower not allowing it to move freely to the top of the mag. Disassembled the mag, found the piece of sand (small pebble), removed it and put it back together and it worked fine. The trigger is nothing to write home about, but its OK for a HD/hiking/field gun.

For what I will use this for, the basic sights and setup will serve me fine. After leaving the short rifle line (100yd) after sight in, I went down to the long range area to see if I could hit anything at distance. The steel targets start out at 300yds, so I shot some old clays at 100, then tried the steel at 300. Had to aim at the head of the silhouette, but I made hits. I'm used to loudly smacking steel with 168gr bullets, so the fairly quiet hits of the small rounds were weird. Without a spotter, or magnified optic it would have been a waste to try further ranges, the ground was wet and still had spots of snow so the only way I knew I was hitting at 300 was due to the sound, couldn't see impacts.
