Someone replied to one of my posts suggesting I put the pictures in the build it yourself, mega build.  This one looks like a good place.  I'll put all of the different post together here.

Here's a couple shots of the first build. I love it.

Superior Barrel 18" Terabatus, and flash hider
Mega Billet upper/lower
BCM, BGC
Brownels? low pro gas block and stainless gas tube
YHM Smooth hand guard and end cap
YHM front and rear BUS
MIAD. Not real happy with the fit. May have to do some carving on it.
Bill Springfield LPK 3 lb. Awesome Thanks Bill
EMOD stock

It seems to be a shooter too. Won't really know until I get optics. 10" steel plates at 300 yards don't stand a chance though

It doesn't seems to care what I feed it either. Ran great with 53, 55, & 62 grain NATO stuff, good groups with iron sights.  Loading up some heavier stuff today to see how it does.  Can't wait to see what it will really do.

Does anyone have any experience with Valdada optics?? I'm thinking of their 2-12 tactical.

I think Larue QD mounts and something for long work and something for short work, probably aimpoint not sure which one.

Enjoy

Finally mounted a scope.  Put a Nikon 4 x 16 mildot on it for now until I come up with the coin for the Valada I want.  I went with the American Defense QD Recon X mount and rings due to the fact that I can swap out the rings for 35mm when I change scopes.

With the new scope I was able to put some rounds down range and see what this baby could do.  It will definitely out shoot me!!  I might have been able to tighten up the groups if I wasn't shivering.  It was 25 degrees.  The results are below.  The targets have 1" squares.

I have put 500 rounds through it so far and it hasn't missed a lick.  Love it.

Well hello, my name is Chris Mace and I want to take the time to introduce myself here. I live in south Louisiana and this isn't my first AR, but it is the first one that I built... SO this ONE is mine. It's a S&W lower, and then I bought the M4CAR kit from BlackThorn Products... I cannot tell you how impressed I am with their service. The parts were a little "rough" but they got here fast and they fit. I will perform some upgrades over the next few weeks, but then after that there will be another build. So anyway, thanks for listening to me ramble!

Blackthorne is the absolute worst kit companies in the industry. I hope yours works & works safely. Many others have not had the same luxury using their parts.

If you are going to get a DD Lite Rail then don't get a Sun Devil Upper rec(or vice versa) you will notice the steel coloured screw in the left side view.. that is because it would not fit against the side of the upper rec, or the top for that matter.  I had to file the screw down until the diam of the head was small enough.  I still need to do the top screws.  I expect some would run into this problem with a VLTOR upper rec as well, but I cannot verify this.

Dont take this as a complaint, it is not DD's job to make sure their rails fit on every AR variant known to man.. it is just something someone will have to look out for.

Could you have milled a pocket in the upper to clear the bolt head instead? (just the bolt head, and install the bolt before  you put the plate on)  Never played with DD rails, just wondering if you could assemble it with the bolt already in place.

Thanks Cansler.

Blaster:  Yeah I thought about returning my dd rail, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.  I like the look of both the SD upper and the DD rail.. ah well, the more work I put into the weapon the more I appreciate it.  What did you replace it with?

RDTCU:  Yes you could have milled into the upper.  Would not even have to go in that far, the spacing is off by less then 1mm on the side(the top is off by more then the side)  You could taper the mill work in, or you could just cut in for the head of the screw to fit perfectly (in which case you would need to put the screws in before installing the barrel nut). Also, the Problem is only on the top 2 screws and the left middle screw. The right side has the cut out for the dust cover pin.  Shaving one side of the screw wouldn't work because you need to turn it since the threading is in the rail.  The funny thing is that if they had threaded both sides of all 6 holes I could have ignored the left side screw, and it would have been fine, more then adequate for recreational shooting, or commie sniping

Gotta pic up my Leupold 1.5-5X, but otherwise this is done...for now.

Upper:
Vltor VIS-3 monolithic chassis
Denny's Super-Duty M16 BCG
Vltor GunFighter charging handle
Noveske 18" stainless, SPR barrel, Ion-Bonded
Noveske lo-pro gas block and tube, Ion-Bonded
Titan low-profile BUIS
AAC Miter-Blackout flash-hider
BOBRO gen-III bipod
Tango-Down QD-VFG

Lower:
Noveske N4 lower
Ergo tacky grip
Magpul UBR
Tubbs flat wire recoil spring
H2 buffer
Magpul enhanced buttpad
Timney 3# drop-in trigger group
Brownell's trigger-loop
Aluminum extended bolt release
hand-picked lower small parts
Magpul 20-round PMag

Did the barrel break-in and cleaning.
bathroom digital scale says...9.5lbs.

It assembled with absolutely no problems, and went bang for the 20 shots to break it in. The AAC piece seemed to take the "crack" outta the report, and the Tubbs recoil spring is quiet. It felt very tight and smooth. The upper to lower fit is super close and snug. I'm itchin' to get the optics on it.

Hi all!

I'm a new ar15.com member who's nursing a pretty bad case of black-rifleitis. Thank you to all who have provided so much good info.

I just got done building my first ar-15
Kaiser Defense stripped lower
dpms lpk
Ergo ambi Suregrip
Magpul CTR on a milspec 6 pos receiver extension
BCM upper
BCM BCG
BCM Gunfighter CH
YHM 16" 1:7 chromed carbine barrel
YHM Diamond series FF forearm
YHM lo-pro gas blocik
YHM 5C2 FH/comp
CA required neutering (bullet button)

A set of Magpul MBUS, ERGO rail ladders and a 30 rd PMag (blocked to 10rd , again for CA compliance ), and armorers wrench to snug things up are enroute.
After the budget recovers, I'll be getting an aimpoint ML2 or ML3 to complete things.

Undecided if I'll go with a VFG or not. Also eventually want to get a tac flashlight, but since this will mainly be a range/plinking gun that's not a priority.

Hi guys. new to arfcom. love the site. found a lot of info that I used to build my first (and second) ar's.

I built a 16" carbine and had so much fun doing that it made me want to build my second rifle. I put a few round through the carbine and it was a blast. waiting for my membership to go through the local gun club to get a chance to shoot the 2nd rifle ;-)

here they are together:

both have mega machine lowers. carbine is a LMT upper. the stainless barrel is a 26" krieger DCM match 0.920" @ muzzel. it has a giessel DCM match two stage trigger in it (which i love). 3.5 lbs lead weight in the stock. with the bipod and night force benchrest 12-42x50 scope on it total weight comes into something around 17.5 lbs

Thought I would show off my collection of AR's.

I'm lucky enough to have 8 of them...

From Left to Right, they are as follows:

1)  Double Star Lower, Del-Ton 11.5" 1-9 Chrome lined upper with CAA Stock and MagPul Hand Guard, Houge Grip, Detachable Carry Handle Sight. This is my SBR.
2)  Double Star Lower, Del-Ton 16" 1-9 Mid Length Chrome lined Upper, MagPul Stock and UTG 4 Rail Hand Guard, Cheapo Red Dot. Vertical Grip, Houge Grip, Matech Rear Sight
3)  Anvil Arms Lower, Del-Ton 16" 1-9 Mid Length Chrome Molly Upper with Yankee Hill Folding SIght/Gas Block, 6 Pos Stock, Matech Rear Sight, Standard Grip
4)  Bushmaster, 16" A2 Carbine, 6 Pos Stock, Houge Grip, Vertical Grip, UTG 4 Rail Hand Guard, Yankee Hill Flash Hider,
5)  Double Star Lower, Del-Ton 16" 1-9 Mid Length Chrome Molly Upper, 6 Pos Stock, Matech Rear Sight, Houge Grip
6)  Colt SP1, completely stock, Made in the late 1970's.  Previous owner had it a s "Safe Queen" Beautifull condition. Originally had M16 FCG and a SP1 Carrier.
7)  Double Star Lower, Del-Ton 20" A2 Upper, A2 Stock. Round Handguards, Houge Grip.
8)  DPMS Lower, Eagle Arms 20" Flat-top Upper, Harris Bipod, A2 Stock, 4-16X50 Leapers Scope (Yeah, Cheesy Scope)

None are overly spectacular, but they were fun to build and I do enjoy taking them out to shoot. Each has its own shooting characteristics and nuances. I do plan on building a couple of more and one of them will be the BEST of every part made. And much better optics (Eotech, ACOG, and Nightfiorce Scopes).

Well, new to the site, and it's my first build.  I enjoyed everything so much, I now want to build another....already.

RRA Stripped Lower (local guy so no transfer fee, no shipping, half tax)
RRA LPK
BCM Upper
BCM BCG
DD chrome-lined 5.56 NATO 1:7 MPI
MI 12" Free Float
Magpul MBUS
Eotech 512 (bought used and painted tan, did a poor job painting it back to black)

I got some paint to fill in the FIRE and SAFE, and decide while working on my artistic skills to paint the RRA logo as well.  I'm looking for opinions as I can easily get rid of it.  I kind of like it b/c it helps it to stand out a bit.

Picked up the last 2 of my custom lowers today and got 1 put together. Now I have to wait a bit to build up the last one

From L-R in the pic I built up #1,3,5,6,7. I still need some optics for the 9mm and to get it SBR'd and I hope to get another MIAD for the middle one tomorrow. Then.................... It never really ends does it

L-R
Mega made custom lower with GA state seal/Delton upper, YHM diamond rail
Bushmaster factory 20" A2
Anvil Arms lower, deticated TacSol .22 upper, X200B, DD BUIS, ADM mount/Tasco reddot it works
GA lower, RRA L/W Midy upper, X200B, RRA tact handle/Tasco again
Doublestar lower, DelTon 16" C/L HB upper, UBR, PEPR/Bushnell 10X40 mildot, DD Lite 12.0 (temp. optics)
Superior lower, Saber defence 18" upper, DD lite rail, ADM/Burris XTR14, UBR, Primary Arms light (killed a deer this year)
RRA 9mm deticated lower, DD Lite 7.0 SSR, ADM/????????, X200B, Tros 5" 3 lug barrel, Trident9
The only one I don't like is the Superior lower only B/C Pmags don't drop free.

Just got the charging handle today. It's a fairly standard rifle on this site, but I'm very happy with it and am now aware of all the hype. For now, I am swapping my only sling and light/mount between this and my Stag, but each will have their own eventually. I will probably pick up a KAC VFG for it, too.

Kool-Aid Alert!

(that's just oil smudging near the mag well)

ETA Specs:
Spike's Lower
Stag/CMT LPK
Noveske QD endplate
Magpul MOE grip
Magpul CTR stock
BCM mid-length upper (standard)
DD Omega 9 handguard

BCM Upper

I kind of like it b/c it helps it to stand out a bit.

welcome to the site Bucks13
that's a nice rifle you built I've been thinking of changing my BCM midlengh to that set up
How do you like that MI rail?  How does the rifle balance with the MOE stock? What gas block did you use?

I really should have posted this here and not started a thread about it. This site has provided me with a wealth of information on this platform and as a result greatly influenced the choice of components. I regret that I don't have the space to put together a workbench. I had to have the rail and barrel assembled onto the receiver by a local gunsmith, but I installed the parts kits on the lower and upper and believe that I could assemble the barrel and rail completely given the proper tools. (perhaps the next one...)

Note to self: it is not cheaper to build.

MEGA M4 receiver stripped $115
MEGA no logo stripped lower $135
RRA LPK $70
CMT upper parts kit $25
Ergo grip $20
Spike's Tactical Pistol Buffer tube kit $45
BCM standard 11.5" barrel 5.56 1:7 $240
LaRue BCG $140
PRI gasbuster $95
YHM 5C1 FH $30
LaRue gas block $74
carbine gas tube $12
LaRue 9" handguard $290
TROY rear folding sight $120
TROY tritium front sight $155
LaRue index clip/handstop combo $45
MagPul MS2 sling $50
Aimpoint ML3 $350
LaRue 129 cantilever mount $130
LaRue Po' Boy combo $200
Surefire/LT mount $150

Legally owning a kick-ass, evil-looking, black pistol: priceless

thanks for the welcome and the compliment.

i actually really like the rail, it seemed to go on with a smooth, snug fit.  it has a "tension ring" and a set screw to secure it, which seem to do the trick.  there was just a bit of space between the rail and the upper, which from other's AR pictures i can tell is normal, but i didn't like it.  so i took a dremel to it and shaved it down just enough to get it to touch on the last rotation.  being my first build, i have no experience with other equipment, (troy, larue, etc.) but it seems to be fairly light and well balanced.  i guess i could say it's a bit front heavy (barely?), but it feels very comfortable in my hands.

oh, and i just used a yhm low profile gas block (~20 from BCM) with the set screw.  this isn't a duty rifle, plus it's covered by the rail, so i'm not too worried about it falling off (plenty of loctite on the set screws.)  i only have 100 rounds through it so far but i think the gas block is funtioning properly, although i did have some FTFeed with some brown bear ammo...not sure if i was short stroking b/c of gas loss from the block, or due to not lubing enough before my first session.  the federal stuff i bought from wally-world all fired flawlessly so who knows.  i'm going to a friend's place tuesday to put a bunch more of the brown bear through it, now that i've lubed it down well, to make sure the rifle is ok.

pm me if you would like some more pictures of the rail or stock.

Man, that was easy!  I should have been "building" these years ago. Heck of a lot easier than the AKs I used to build.

Aero Precision lower - Fine quality. All of the LPK parts fit just right. Finish is nice and consistent but could be a little tougher.
Stag LPK - Excellent finishing and machining. Fit just right into lower.
Stag Buffer Tube - Only complaint is the finish. It looks like flat-black spray paint but seems to be somewhat durable, though. MOE stock fits snug with no wobble.
Magpul MOE stock - Well made. Fit and function is excellent. Snug fit on buffer tube.

Crappy pic I just took:

Now I just need to get a Magpul BAD, shop some different pistol grips and decide on an upper.
