Did Colt ever make them?  I just traded some hard-to-find AK mags for some steel 30-round mags without doing much homework.  No manufacturing date on mag bodies, generic looking springs, green follower and Colt stamp mag base.  I hope I didn't trade for "magic beans".

Sounds like beans to me man. Any pics? They sound like shitty old USA brand mags to me. Do they say colt ar15 on the floor plate?

I've owned Colt rifles for nearly thirty years, and been shooting them for forty, and I've never seen or heard of a steel Colt-branded magazine.

Colt never made/distributed steel AR mags (besides 9mm)

Do they look like the ones in this thread? this thread?

I'll get some pics up soon.  But the mag bodies are nicely parked gray.  Floor plates are a bit beat up but has Colt prancing pony 5.56 Hartford, Conn.  I think it's a gun-show "special" and I fell for it.

During the AWB, it was very common for unscrupulous shitbags to put Colt floorplates on defective Cooper mags with missing welds, and POS (USA brand?) steel mags.

If your mags are parked gray, they might be steel Brit SA-80 mags. Those were very popular toward the end of the ban. Most of the gray parked Brit mags came with a sticker with the word "England" on them. The sticker was about 1/4"x1/2" and resided on the bottom half of the mag. One telltale about those little stickers: when removed they left behind sticker residue that was difficult to remove. Do your mags have any sticker residue like that on them?

Yep.  There was a vendor at a local show that always displayed a basket of 'Colt' magazines (with missing welds), and RIGHT NEXT TO IT was a basket of 'Cooper' floor plates.

I contacted guy I traded with regarding feedback here regarding the authenticity of the "Colt steel 30's" and he said he paid a lot for them at a gun show recently and he claims he did NOT know if they were genuine Colts or not.  I told him since he listed them for trade as genuine Colts, he violated forum rules.  He told me he already turned around and traded the AK mags to his buddy (sure!)--so he can't unwind the trade.  I suggested he throw in some Glock or Sig hi-caps and he agreed, but I would have to pay the difference to reflect the market price.  Oh well, at least the guy tried to make it right.
