I have one of these and it will not cycle (consistently short-strokes) with every type of ammo I have tried. (Federal 55gr .223, Federal AE 55gr & 62gr 5.56, Hornady Z-Max .223 55gr, Tula 55gr. 223-knew this wouldn't cycle but I had to try, etc.) I sent the rifle back to LWRC about a month ago and they stated  that they had fixed it to fire all types of factory ammo INCLUDING Tula. Well I am just now getting around to test fire it and it is still short-stroking. Anyone have any experience with these?

Do you know ammo they tried? I think some of the stuff you listed is a little low on the pressure side, try some Prvi or IMI and see how it goes. Only gun I've had that short stroked only like mil pressure stuff. Just a thought.

For your new run of tests, what ammo have you tried? Is there any that it won't short stroke on? Also, does the UCIW come with the short buffer or is it a milspec length?

It is their proprietary flat-coil spring. I believe it is a little shorter than a standard carbine tube/spring set up.

The UCIW buffer has 2 tungsten weights in it, so it's heavier than a standard carbine buffer. Pop out the roll pin remove the weights, replace the tip, and see if it still short-strokes. If not, try 2 steel weights or 1 steel and 1 tungsten.

If it still short-strokes with no weights in the buffer, you will need to open up the gas port.

This is on a factory piston gun?  What gas port setting are you on - or is it non-adustable?

I have not had any issues cycling in my SBR's, but they are all DI frankenguns.

Tried the weight removal/changing in the buffer already too.

It is a factory LWRC UCIW with a non-adjustable gas block. I am glad you haven't had any issues with your DI frankenguns (seriously) .........but what does that have to do with my question?

What magazines have you tried? Does it happen for all?

Reducing the buffer weight didn't help at all?

ETA: Have you removed your top cover to inspect your spring/op rod? I know it is a more obvious thing but sometimes we forget the obvious and go for more complex solutions.

Did you try removing the buffer weights completely? Have you verified nothing in the action is sticking or binding?

If so, your only options are to verify the gas block is properly aligned to the gas port on the barrel, and if that is good, drill out the gas port until it cycles properly.

For a gun costing that  much, it should work with types of ammo right off the bat. I would send it back and get a replacement or get a PWS

Very few don't function and have problems like what the OP is experiencing.. Lemons happen, have for PWS even. We are attempting to figure out the issue not simply tell him to buy another rifle.

I have tried a buffer with no weights, steel weights, tungsten weights and every combo of steel/tungsten weights combined. I have also experimented with other ammo....it seems it will only function with 62gr 5.56 pressure stuff. I guess that's acceptable, but I would have thought for the $2200 price tag they would have either specified that or made sure it functioned with other ammo. I appreciate everyone's help though.

Call LWRC CS.  They'll take care of you.  I know it's not what you want to hear, but sometimes these things happen.
