I set the adjustable gas block to setting 4 and tried two shots. Both failed to extract. I then went to turn the gas to setting three but I turned it the wrong way and the "X" came up. I tried turning it the other way, but it seems to be stuck. I know the instructions say you need to push it in and it'll freely turn on it's own.

That doesn't happen for me. In fact, I can't push it in at all. I didn't fire the gun when it was set to the "X" position, but I cant get it to move now at all.

How did I mess it up?

You didn't mess it up. It can be tough at times. Make sure the detent under the adjustment is pushed in as far as it can go. Turn it the direction to get it back to position #4 and don't be afraid to put some force behind it. Use the gas adjustment tool.

If all else fails, leave it on "X" and pull the the valve out by following the instructions in the manual. The gas block adjustment tool threads into gas block for extraction. The other end of the tool allows for a cleaning rod to be threaded into it. Do this and pull the gas valve out of the gas block by puling on the cleaning rod.

Thanks for the help.
I don't have a manual, just the card that came with the upper. The card doesn't explain how to get the block out.

How hard is it to get the spring and detent back in after removing the block? I read an old post here where the guy recommends removing the block as a last resort because of how hard it is to put back in. He said he had to remove his handguard to finally get his block re-installed.

How hard is it to take off the keymod handguard? Is it just the six screws and it lifts off?

Yes. Just take those screws out. The detent and spring just slide back in. You can download a PDF file of user manual.

According to the manual, you should only remove the gas valve from the gs block once per year for annual maintenance. It's not something you should do every cleaning. I removed mine once just because I was curious and I didn't have any issues. You screw on the gas adjustment tool onto a cleaning rod....you then screw the other end of the tool into the gas vale while it's on position "X". This whole process is so you don't have to remove the hardguard (you stick your cleaning rod w/ tool attached under the hardguard to reach the gas valve).

Thanks again.

It might be easier to take the handguard off. It's a  pretty tight space. The handguard screws are torqued to 60 inch pounds.

Back to the first part. They failed to extract? Were you shooting really light loads? Just messing around with mine that has never happened on any of my three different barrel lengths. And BTW with my key mod rail off I can remove the adjuster by hand.

I was using Wolf ammo, H4 buffer and it wasn't suppressed. I figured it wouldn't cycle, but wanted to see it for myself.

I somehow managed to mangle the detent. A local gunsmith was able to repair it for me and it works fine now.

Wish I knew how I boogered it up so I don't do it again.

Wolf ammo, H4 buffer (which is dedicated suppressor use only per PWS) and no suppressor attached......what the hell were you thinking?

I was starting at the end of the spectrum and working my way back. It was a learning experience.

I missed the "H4" buffer part. Would it cycle fine on the lower settings with that heavy pig in there? How did it feel?

It runs fine on the lower settings with all ammo. For settings 3 and 4 I was using Lake City green tip 556.

Setting 3 felt the best with a suppressor. It ran fine on setting 4, but there was a little too much buffer spring twang for me.

I'll be interested to use a JP SCS when they're available for the PWS.
