I just picked up my first piston gun, and the safety is extremely difficult to engage and disengage. This is the first time I have ever had this issue. Is there an easy fix for this?
Last night I sent an email to PWS but I thought I would ask here if anyone else has had this issue or knows how to improve/fix the problem.  I have to admit I am surprised to encounter this kind of an issue on a new gun that has such a great rep. I am sure PWS would make it right but even if they tell me to send it back in I hate to do that with a new gun that I have not yet even fired.

I would take the upper off, then cock the hammer and cycle the safety multiple times. It should break in after 20-30 flips. The safety will not engage unless the hammer is cocked. Try this and see if it loosens up.

I'm not sure how comfortable you are working on your gun.  But the best way to fix it is to remove your grip (unscrew the screw inside the grip when you remove the Magpul grip cover on the bottom).  Then the selector spring and small detent will come out.  Then remove the selector switch and dab a small amount of grease (using a pick or toothpick or something like that) in the cut out area for the detent.  Then reassemble it.

If you didn't know, the pointy part of the detent fits into the cut out area in the selector switch.  That's where the clicking comes from when you click it on and off.

I can't remember, but I think your hammer may have to be cocked, or the selector switch won't come out of or go in to the lower receiver.

I snipped a couple rings off my spring because it was so tight with the safety.

Once the tip of the pin wears a bit, you will have a loose, mushy feeling safety.

If there is a problem, it is a simple fix. Just remove your grip and the spring and detent will come right out. If the problem persists, just replace those 2 parts. No need to send back to the factory for something so minor.

Thanks for your help. I think the safety is working better yet it is still a little too stiff for my liking but I will continue to work it and see if it loosens up to the level of my others.
Perhaps I was a little hasty in sending my email to PWS customer service. PWS did respond quickly and assured me they would handle it if it did not loosen up. Thanks to all of you for your advice. It is nice to be part of a forum where you can depend on members to help out with advice when needed.

Grease works well, as does oil.
Get some lube on the pin and the safety, they sit on the couch and work the safety selector 100 or so cycles

Although I dont have a PWS, my safety selector and bolt release were hard to actuate when fresh out the box. The release felt like I needed Thor's hammer to get the paddle to disengage for the first 30 or so times.

New gun. Many friction surfaces are still going to need some run-in time. A drop or two of lube and some patience goes a long way.

Remember, these weapons are built with parts that come from the supplier with a spec'd range of acceptable tolerances - sometimes it's a bit looser/easier, sometimes tighter/harder to actuate or run once put together.

Match grade builds or fully smithed tuned weapons this is when you should expect silky smooth operation from every functional component you engage with from the point you're handed the weapon.
