So, I picked up a 556 off Armslist, Hogue grip, chrome bolt carrier, but blued bolt. Has the Ruger proprietary handguard, can't tell if the barrel is chrome lined or not. Looks like it may be a CLA, but appears the muzzle brake is screw on. Thoughts? Did I get a bastardized E model semi pimped to look like a non E model? Is there an easy way to tell?

The barrel is also not fluted. Looking more and more like a pimped E model. Not a happy camper.

You can call Ruger. They can tell you what you have using the serial number.

Winner winner, I sometimes forget how awesome Ruger customer service is. It left thier facility as an E model. Wonder how I get a chrome carrier instead of blued? Yay for me I guess!!!!

There seems to have been a short transition period where some rifles had a blued bolt and chromed carrier but newer production 556E's are shipping with a chromed bolt carrier and chromed bolt.  I guess Ruger decided it was easier to inventory one bolt carrier for all models instead of maintaining a parts supply just for the "E."

I have a SR556E that I bought from ImpactGuns that came to me with a chromed carrier and a blued bolt, the barrel is non-chrome lined either. Honestly though if you got a good deal then there's nothing to worry about. My rifles great.

That's the thing, I gave up in trade what a Non-E version would go for. The guy had a reciept showing what he paid (full retail) right after the panic started. I should have known that it was an E model just from that aspect alone. But, I wanted the 762's little brother enough to forge ahead without full knowledge.

I still love it, it shoots GREAT! Who needs a chrome lined barrel anyway (although I would have still liked it to come with one, lol)?
