The A-1 is open all the way around. The A-2 is closed at the bottom, hence the need to be timed.
Having used both from the prone, I never noticed a difference. Given a choice, I'd take an A-1.

I time them so flats are at 3 and 9.

The Military did not time them, so I don't either.
