This is the one I was talking about earlier... what gives on the finish?
USGI in the back...  Chrome chipped on corners?  Is it possible this was bead blasted? |

I think that's dried out storage preservative. Oil or grease cosmoline. -W
Yes, you can chip the chrome if you drop them or let them bang around in a tool box, or shipping with other metal parts. |

I have buffed a small section with a dremel and buffing wheel thinking the same thing...it got a little bit brighter but certainly nothing like the top one.

try something like carb cleaner,acetone , or lacquer thinner. just wipe, see what happens.

Flitz might do it, or some other automotive chrome polish. Also it looks like you're a handloader, maybe a few minutes in the brass tumbler might fix it up.

Maybe it's nickel or tin coated and not chrome? It kind of has that rainbow corrosion thing going on... That or someone used some sort of natural (animal based) grease on it and got it really hot...

Here it is in the middle:
 Left side..note chip in the finish   On left..parked in middle...note chipped finish and in pic in first post.  Any chance it went through a "rebuild" and they blasted it and parked it? And all they did was dull the finish? |

That is a parked carrier with 90+ % of the finish work off or dipped off in a solution.

Parkerizing doesn't chip off like that though. That looks like some type of coating.

Use a dremel tool with a buffer wheel on slow speed and if it is chrome, it will polish up like an old penny. |
