I got this from a high up at colt. I'm trying to find information on it. I read some old post and see there is not much known about it. I've seen it called the white unicorn and that Reed Knight has the only factory ones. We'll here is a factory 656 upper it's on an sp1 lower  but the it is the real deal upper. What do you think?

What is the lower marked as?  It looks like a SP1 lower but the roll marks could be interesting.  Also, what kind of pin is holding the upper to the lower?  Is it a large hole upper?  If so, is the (large) hole anodized?

That is SWEET! Any way you could get some detailed shots of the rear sight assembly? I'm trying to build a 656, I need to fabricate that part, and those are the most detailed shots I've seen yet. I'm using an A1 upper that had the carry handle cut off and a weaver rail attached as the base upper.

Lower is an sp1 marked colt ar-15 as for hole bare with me I'm pretty new to the whole ar thing. Do you want to know front pivot hole size or rear and what would be anodized?

We were wondering if the front pivot pin hole in the upper was the large SP1 size. All the other 656 uppers that have come out of the woodwork had milspec 0.250" holes.

Would it please be possible to post close up shots of the rear sight from the rear and top and also some pics of the barrel without the handguards. Thank you.

Congratulations on finding and purchasing this rare find.

This.   And maybe the scope mount if possible. Hope we aren't asking too much but the opportunity
To request 656 pics never happens.
And 44echo is right, some barrel pics would be nice.
We appreciate it

That's a pretty good shot. I would greatly appreciate any others of that area that you can take. I have not been able to find any detailed pics of this area before, so I GREATLY appreciate you taking the time to put some up for me/us.

I'll take more pics when I get home from work. You guys make me feel like I found something you should not be able to. Can you put some type of value on it for me. Thanks

Hard to say on value. I've never heard of one being for sale.
I've seen DOE 9mm upper and M231 uppers go for 1200 to 1500$.
Colt long machine gun uppers go for more, and all of those are considered rare.
But you have a unicorn.... You can ask whatever you want, but the problem is
It's not a very well known model.

Wow!  Thank you for the pictures.  I can see how the hood for the front sight goes on, does that square block hold the front sight itself in or just the hood?  I can't tell from the pictures how the front sight itself is mounted.  Is it part of the FSB or set on top somehow?

As for value?  You get to make that number up and chances are someone will buy it, you really do have a unicorn.  There is no comparison for it.

I wish NDS would make them too, but probably never going to happen, like the 605 upper, they made them and stopped because they didn't sell well. The set-ups on a new part are astronomical.  I forgot to "quote" the message above about NDS on this

You found a Unicorn Egg.  Good work!
Up til now, I don't think any of us had seen pictures of one taken after the 70's, other than a few dirty shots of a couple behind glass at museums or the Knight collection.

Luckily, your photography skills are also up to snuff, so these are, by far, the best and most detailed pics I've ever seen of a 656.

Now take those handguards off!

And the 605 could at least use the same forgings they already had. 656 wouldn't.

I want to see what's under her dress also. My guess is a 606
Type heavy barrel.

There are members who have 656 reproductions,,, not many.
The problem isn't the upper, it's the scope and mount.
Finding a realist ART at a fair price is tough . There have been
Four on e bay for years, and for the price they want that's probably where
They will stay .the next problem is the mount. I talked to a guy at Knights a few
Years ago and basically they only made a handful , meaning
They didn't make any more than they needed for the rifles they had.
So if you can get someone to make the upper, and you find a scope,
You will have to have a mount made.

So I'm thinking of putting my 656 on gunbroker what would be a good reserve ?

There probably hasn't ever been one for sale so you'll set the value on them.

I hope not. Sometimes people have lives outside the retro forum.

I was really wanting to see some more detailed pics though. Maybe Mr Reed Knight will someday publish a book with detailed pictures of his fantastic collection or even start his own super groovy retro website.

Ha, I forget that not everybody makes it to our nightly meetings.

OP and I traded a couple of E mails about some more detailed pics
Of the scope mount and maybe the barrel under the hand guard. He said he would do hopefully he makes it back.
Not everyday that you have a chance to request 656 pics.

A couple of years ago I talked to a guy at knights who was helping
Me with 656 info , and I asked him about the possibility of a book in the future.
He said no... But they did plan to digitize the whole collection.
Some one would be able to click the model they were interested in
On a virtual wall and then see 3d images of the rifle and get
It's history.  Who knows when though
