Doing some cutting/milling/filing/sanding to turn a modern 80% lower into a slabside.  I used an endmill chucked in my drill press to remove most of the fence.  I "pecked" it away with the endmill since I didn't want to put a lot of lateral stress on a drill press.  When I got close, I switched to a file.  I still have a lot of shaping to do around the buffer tube reinforcement, and I still have to remove the reinforcement under the front pin.

Not necessarily trying to clone a particular model, just wanted to make a slabside carbine with triangular handguards and a 2-position aluminum stock.

Still a work in progress.  I know NoDak makes one far better than I can hope to make, but I wanted to try it myself.

Good job, especially on the curve around the mag button, that part was tough for me to get right. Are you going to re-profile the pivot pin area as well?

Really impressed by that, nice job OP.

Posts like this make me really miss my dad...he was an Industrial Arts teacher and loved working with Aluminum. I could just see him digging into 80%’s, modifying and having fun milling them out.

He passed away right after I made my first Mattel lower…and we had plans to have him join me on the next…

OP – nice job and I realize my post was a bit off topic, but it brought back good memories of my dad. (Korean war combat vet)

Looks like you are working with a Colt 9mm upper, I noticed as that is one of my current builds....

Yes, I'm planning to do the pivot pin area.  And I still have a lot of work to do on the rear.  The curve around the mag button isn't perfect, but I'm at the point where continuing to mess with it will make it worse, not better.

To answer other posts:

Fastswift, I'm glad you have good memories of your Dad, it's good to think of those who are close to us after they are gone.

Getchasum, the upper is a Fulton.  I thought about using a Colt 9mm and drilling a gas tube hole.  How common is it to go that route?

It could be done no problem but also would need to milled for cam pin...

This is showing the patience and attention to detail I would expect from someone who also builds his own guitars!

Really nice.
I really like to see builders go the DIY route.
If this is just your first receiver mod, looks like you have the skills for it.
The next one will go much easier.

That looks really nice, OP.  What twist is your bbl?

1x9 twist.

This is my first receiver mod.  I may do a couple more.  Maybe a partial fence.

nice job I did one about 8 months ago when I did my ColtGuard Clone .....can I ask what 80 % blank did you use, I tried it with a Vision and the front detent and spring channel was still very evident after milling off the fence....I just got some of the tactical machining 80%'s and was gonna give it another try, but upon looking the same detent channel is still cut too close to the frame side and I didn't wanna get into the mag well wall anymore...how about a pic from the top of the receiver looking down the mag well
.

I have several 80s lying around from different companies and I just chose the one that looked like it had the most shallow detent channel.  At this point, I'm not absolutely positive which manufacturer this one came from, but I'm about 90% confident that it is an Ares blem.

And that is how the game should be played, gentlemen.  Well done, OP.
