http://www.scribd.com/doc/26236177/M16A1-Comic-Vietnam-Era#scribd

These were issued during Vietnam to help the soldiers maintain their rifles. Pretty much everything is still the same except CLP synthic oil has replaced mineral based LSA.
Scroll down and you can read the whole book.

I remember these like yesterday. They were laying around all the work area's when I was active duty, USMC 1978-82. Covered about anything from M16A1's to tank's. It was easier for the average solider/sailor/airman/marine to pick up a comic book than a boring TM manual for up to date information and spec changes.

There were 2 versions and they were slightly different from each other. The earlier version mention the waffle mag as being obsolete and warned not to use it.

I still have one or two I picked up in the service in 1974.  Really cool.  I forget whether mine is earlier or later one.  I'll have to check.

I would like to pick one of the originals up some day for my memorabilia collection. I have seen them on ebay, but I am apprehensive about buying one from there.

I just checked.  My dog-eared copy is the 1969 version, with no mention of waffle mags.  I did have the earlier one at one time, but I think I gave that to my kid when I built him a shorty.

ADDED: I picked up a box of them in the late 80s when I was doing gun shows and building and selling lots of ARS (made from PWAs, SGW, NESARD, EA J-15 cast lowers with surplus parts).  I gave those away as manuals for the guns I sold.  I think those were reprints, as they were not on as heavy a paper as the couple I had from the service.  I sent one to a nephew who was a Marine Infantry Sgt. while he was in Afghanistan.  He and his buddies got a kick out of it.

Somewhere I have the copy I raided out of the box of the brand new m16a1 that was given/loaned to my pd.   It was quite odd to handle a 1971 rifle without a scratch on it and all the accessories neat and boxed up, never having seen daylight.

The 1968 version has waffle mag reference.

Yep, that's the one I had!  Dang!  I gave the kid the wrong one.  Oh well, that was at least 6 years ago.
