Someone here, maybe Ameiro ? was asking about the Armalite Hollywood AR5.  Here she is, and for sale.  Not mine.

The rifle at auction is quite a bit different than the survival model.  The mag release seems to be an afterthought as compared to the one below.

Salesman sample, or ....
or back in 1965 someone pulled an action out of the Armalite dumpster and then later made a nice buttstock for it.

Nice looking little rifle, but without more doco a hard sell, for me anyway. The idea was a cheap, beat around survival rifle, with a bit of a punch. That Manlicher type stock in curly wood does not look like an Armalite exercise.

But don't let me stop you.

Where is Armiero ?

Personally I like the AR-7s I've seen installed in an M1 carbine stock. I think the AR-5 would be great in the same stock.

Depending on how the barrel looks at the muzzle, that AR5 is either a left over from when they changed the design and someone decided to put together a presentation or show off piece. Would like to know if it has the upgraded 2 lug bolt though.

The stock is too fancy as far as the stocking job goes and changes to the mag release.  Even looks like they ran the mag through a commercial polish and blue job.  Look at how precise the area around the bolt handle was inletted.  If you have ever handled a legit AR5 you know how critical that area is for a pain free bolt lift.

In my opinion, at the time frame Armalite designed the AR5 and finally gave up on the design, that style stock was very much in favor in the Western US and in Europe from the mid 1950s until the late 1960's.  More than likely someone salvaged a AR5 receiver and put it together as a bribe or show piece for possible gun rag article.  I will go through some of my old Guns And Ammo mags from the 1950s and 60s to see if that piece ever made it to press.

Price is a little exclusive/high without a pedigree, since a papered Armalite AR5a just sold with a spare barrel and receipt from Armalite in Costa Mesa for $2000 just last month privately out of a collection/estate in Indiana.  I would drop some cash on it, but I just found a smoking deal on some like new in box Colt 613's for about $5000 under what that major Florida Class3 has been offering + a minty Maremont M60 for under $30,000.

Happy Holidays!

Looks like the "salesman sample" AR5 had a mix of early and later features for the AR5/5a.  So lends itself to being a upscaled retail sales model to drum up possible over the counter sales or still maybe a cobbled up rifle as a proof of concept.

Mag release was basically a modification of the early M4 survival rifle mag release that was on the first AR5/MA-1 rifle.  The AR5a had the improved magazine release that was inside the trigger guard, and later found itself on the AR7 models.  Receiver markings are still consistant with all the AR-5's after the second prototype model.

Still would like to know if the salesman gun had the earlier single lug AR5 bolt with the single lug.

Still a viable rifle today, just wish it was made in 5.7 centerfire or even 22 hornet again.

Originaly,ArmaLite made two variations of the AR-5,the AR-5 and the AR-5A.

The AR-5 has revited sections and used the same M4 survival rifle magazine.

The AR-5A as a machined receiver with no revited sections, the magazine catch/release is front of the trigger,in the trigger guard, and it as the "Ronson Lighter" magazine.

The one in the image is a AR-5,the salesman sample question,if ArmaLite was using a salesman sample it would have a plastic stock as the use of plastic for the stock was one of the basis for ArmaLite technology (at the time),i have no idea of the works used for the magazine catch/release in the AR-15 (the AR-5 as it in fron of the trigger) but in the image there is a lever pice in front of the trigger guard, this was possibly made so the receiver could be used in this stock...?!?

This is the first AR-5 i have ever seen and if only the receiver is original it would be a nice collection pice to have...but for that price...?!?

I am not saying that it is not a original "salesman sample" as i am just speculating...good luck.

For 7k my guess is that it was researched pretty good by the buyer and maybe some documentation we are not seeing from seller.  Back in 54, it was probably a hard sell for the AR5.  Being space age, plastic and odd looking, the  buyers of the time were probably more inclined to buy a traditional wood and metal gun most hunters and sportsman were familiar with.  I could see if sales were slow that a one off might be made for a trade show, etc.

It would be nice if we could see the butstock to see if there is a ArmaLite logo.

AR-5

AR-5A

Why use a diferent magazine in the AR-5A if the USAF had magazines for the M4 (the same ones used in the AR-5)?
