When you say USGI, keep in mind that most of the guns were purchased outside normal channels, and were subject to Colt's mix and match practices.
There are several pictures of Squeals using 727's, both with 603/M16A1 and M16A2 lower receiver designs, but with S-S-F fire control groups. M16A2 lower

i wonder if there was such a thing as a a2 lower with a a1 upper and m4 barrel?
