Legit? I'm just starting this and have read of the slings.

Legit.  They were actually made by one of the companies who made american automobile seatbelts.  Used to know the name but you should be able to google it if really interested.  Hence the seatbelt reference name. Very late 60's early 70's mfg.

How long were the OD nylon slings in service for? I'm guessing the black slings I recall on the M16A2s were a product of the mid-1980s?

The 1st contract for the seatbelt nylon sling was 1969,so if your rifle is supposed to represent a pre 1969 vintage rifle, then these seatbelt slings would not be correct,,,,,if you're anal about details.

I just received mine from him yesterday.

The one I ordered is a "been there and back, twice" version & it still looks really nice. I was really hoping for more "been there & back" for my battlefield pickup M16A1 but it is the one of the worst ones he said he had & he sent me pictures of 3 different ones to pick from. Really good buying experience.

I don't agree, but maybe the purists do, that an early rifle shouldn't have a seatbelt on it. Anything and everything could and did happen with parts changes, repair, replacements, etc, etc. I have an xm16e1 1967 build and a 74 n16a1 that. Both h ave seatbelt slings. Yea, I like them that much.

Remember that a certain date rifle got used years and years later.

Not my point. If your display is supposed to represent pre 1969, then a post 1969 item would not have been made yet. This is why I said "if anal".
I will CERTAINLY agree that over time, parts and accessories got switched and swapped,,but again,if anal and representing a PRE 1969 timeline,,then the seatbelt slings did not exist yet.

I'm with you. I just really love the seatbelt sling on them. But I find myself getting more anal all the time.

That's how it happens. At first you don't care then next thing you know you have a 601 and are building a 602!

But that'll NEVER happen to me! I can quit anytime I want!

I see that point of view on the anal particular display thing. So, any old cotton sling works for the 67?  I might get one for it, but will keep a seatbelt on the 74.

Yes,cotton is definite for 67. In fact, the cotton ones were still being made even after the seatbelt slings started being made.
