I was admiring my 602/SP1 clone today while I did a trigger job on it,  While I was doing it,  I dug some stuff out of the safe and found my box of AR mags.  I began counting and found I had over 30 "legally possessed by me in California prior to 1-1-2000" high capacity mags (all GI 20s and 30s).  Considering it had a bullet button on it, they were lanquishing while I used my GIs converted to 10 rounds to be Kalifornication compliant in the rifle.

I got twitchy and decided to make it "featureless" so I could use all those mags.  Wilson Combat comp brake, and a kydex paddle.  My Saiga AK is featureless, as are my PTR91 HK clone and USGI M1 Carbine.  I have high caps for all, and it seemed ridiculous to neuter the 602 and not use the mags....
Here is my retro AR SP1/602 clone (on Nodak Spud 601 lower)

Op looks cool i guess, for being in cali. I think id take the reduced cap without the featureless features.

But honestly, it just makes me sad. Id never live in cali for that reason. And if all my kit is suddenly not legal, id have to at least consider some civil disobedience. Rock the vote, be proactive in trying to restore your rights as those features dont make that weapon any safer.

Im sure there would be some interest though by others if youd explain some of the options you have to own a retro there...

I hate the fact you guys have to go through so much BS. It actually doesn't look that bad for a Kalifornistan build.

ETA: The only time I've ever been to Cali, I was carrying a featureless A2 with a happy switch . I decided Ft Irwin sucked....It was kinda neat at night to see the glow of LA's lights to the southwest and Las Vegas to the northeast.

Your Kydex paddle has a finger bump...

In all seriousness, you did quite well jumping through the flaming hoops the liberals have set up.  Excellent foresight on your part to buy all those magazines.  I initially didn't even notice the paddle, looked @ the front of the rifle and saw you had some sort of funky pistol grip going on.

Thanks.  I trimed about 3/4"  to 1" off the back of the fin.  It was just WAY too big!  It is actually not too bad looking, and handles fairly normal.

SOme of muy mags go back to the 70s when I was in the Army and the USAF reserve.  the rest are either from 20 years as an LEO or 25 years as an FFL (up to 2005).  I had cases of mags for different weapons that I sold at gunshows and in Shotgun News in the late 80s and all through the 90s.  I have high caps for my HK, AR, AK, M1 Carbine, and all my pistols (S&W 59, Glock 19).  Being old has its advantages... I've been shooting for 55 years!

You have to do what you have to.

Having said that, I really hate it for you guys in Cali.  The fact you have to alter the "appearance" that no way affects the function of a firearm to be compliant with the "law" is insane.

We should put out the rumor that large Hello Kitty stickers completely negate the usefulness of firearms for tactical purposes.

Bernie,  Pretty cool for a Cali. AR.  10 rds not enough?  I find myself switching stocks (furniture) ,  barrels,  BCG's etc depending on the mood on an almost regular basis.

Think last count I had 171 mags total including 10, 20 and 30's mostly post 93.  Sold the 75 round drums without ever loading or firing one.

Grip hasn't quite grown on me yet but if I was in Cali I'd probably own 10 of them.  Guess you can't modify them with a holesaw or such? Just checked that was 4800 posts.

I had a 90 round snail drum mag but sold it before ever loading it as well, they are too cumbersome and take too long to reload to be of much use to me. I just recently hit 2000 posts last week, and we both joined 6 months apart in 2008.

Yep, the material is easy to cut/shape/sand.  The one on my PTR91 HK clone is heavily modified.  I have something like 120 high-caps for my four semi auto long guns (AR15, M1 carbine, Saiga AK, and 308 PTR91)  and probably 15 for my two high cap 9mm pistols (Glock 19 and S&W 59).  All are pre-2000 and most are pre-1990.   had an FFL for 25 years, and in the late 80s and 90s, I would have cases of different assault rifle and SMG mags I sold at gun shows and in shotgun news.  Both the Glock and S&W I carried as duty weapons  in the period of 1977 to 2000
