I think you stumbled into the retro forum by mistake but for my 2 cents if you want to learn the AR i'd go with a DI rifle for starters and then you have a good starting base from there

The tried and true DI system has been in use since day one on AR's.

Right now with prices being what they are and this being your first...Colt 6920
Can't go wrong and you can always sell it if need be and prices will probably go back up so you might even get what you paid for it if worse comes to worse. |

Agreed. "Quality Makes It a Colt" CDNN has been offering Colt's for way less than OP's $1200 price point. 6920's for 899.89 and the lightweight CSR-1516 for 699.88. There may be better deals out there, but that's the only ones I know of. I think that offer expired today but it wouldn't hurt to call them. |

Piston systems are also proprietary, so whatever brand yours is only parts of that brand will work.
I agree with the 6920. |

DI all the way. 99% + of the US mil uses these. If you can get a colt for $800 I'd say go for it. The other $400 you can spend on things like ammo, optic, etc. Piston guns are spendy and the quality and reliability varies from brand to brand, also proprietary parts. I own 10 DI guns (I think) and used them for 23 years in army special ops. FWIW, I have a work issued piston gun. It works fine, but I never would have bought it with my $. Buy some military manuals on the gun, learn all you can.

DI system all the way. Don't buy into the anti-hype. Many of us on this board and across the country ( and, indeed, in many third world places we have evacuated ) have used the AR-15 platform for over half a century and the DI system served us well. Buy from a reputable mfg and you'll be good to go.
Colts are at a great low right now....go out and get a Pony...you won't regret it. |

If you are dead set on a piston rifle in 5.56 I'd highly recommend the tavor :-)
But as I stated before If you want an ar and to learn about them then di is the way forward for your first one. |
