Thank you for your feedback

I do like the idea of the UBR gen II being a single unit/tube.  I'm sure it firms up the slop some, but how heavy, relative to other stocks are they?  It seems I hear those UBR stocks are heavy and many people swap them out, but maybe those are not Gen II.   Those are Gen I rigs.....the new Gen II is 40 percent lighter.  To me, it doesn't matter about the weight because the UBR is just an awesome stock.  I am willing to pay the penalty.

Well it seems you are confirming my findings that muzzle breaks are not friendly unless suppressed.  Guess I need some more research and thought.  Thinking that if I was hunting, I wouldn't want/need the use of the suppressor due to added length and weight.  But at the range, well I guess I could run it suppressed most/all of the time.

I am sure this has been answered already, but I was unable to find it looking through LOTS of the previous post.

So...I just order a Maten set with the extended, 16" hand guard and am wanting to use a 16" barrel. Will a 16" barrel be flush with the hand guard, or will the hand guard extend past the end of the barrel?

I will be good if it is flush, as I will be using a brake. But if it actually extends past a 16" barrel, then I guess I will have to go with a 18" barrel.

Thanks in advance.

[#3]
The 16" measurement of the barrel is from the bolt face to the end of the muzzle. You may lose a little bit from what's in the receiver, but not much. It will be pretty close to the same as your handguard.

Also, keep in mind that your brake threads on to the end of the barrel and extends forward from there probably AT LEAST an inch, if not 1.5".

Thanks. Do you own a Maten with the extended hand guard? I only ask because I have a 15 1/2" Hand guard on my SCR build and with a 16" JP barrel, the threaded portion of the barrel is actually inside the hand guard. See attached picture.

So that is why I am wondering about the Maten upper with the extended (not the extended rifle length which is 14") 16" HG and a 16" barrel will work. Looking at the pictures of the upper it seems the barrel extension sits back inside the received before the HG area starts. Looks like it might actually "add" an inch or so to the overall length of the HG if that makes sense?

Tried search but could not find the answer and did not have time to go through 99 pages so forgive me if it has been asked before:

Will Maten lowers mate to an AR-10 upper and vice versa or are they different cuts?

The extended handguard will be just slightly short of flush with the barrel.

I just spoke with Mega and they told me the extended (16") hand guard will be 3/4" LONGER then a 16" barrel. Or from the other direction, the barrel will end 3/4" befor the end of the extended hand guard.

So I guess I will go with a 18" barrel. Kinda bummed as I had my heart set on on a 16" barrel setup.

That looks like the extended RIFLE length (14") HG and not the "mega extended" which is 16"

if you're running the suppressor on and off, why did you choose the seekins AGB over others that are easier to dial in settings for suppressed/not suppressed?

I'm trying to decide on gas blocks right now so asking all questions to help me decide on which one to go with.  I don't see any of the models that had multiple settings on the gas block for suppressed/unsupp./off.  So I'm eyeing the SLR gentry 7 as it at least has positive clicks for adjustment that I may be able to manually adjust in the field.

The SLR is without a doubt the best adjustable gas block you can get in my mind.  I have it on every one of my builds and I run those all suppressed as well.  As for having to constantly adjust it in the field, what I did was took the round and load I knew I would primarily shoot through each rifle and found the minimal adjustment to make the rifle cycle.  That way when I put on the can, the back pressure increases but not to gross extent and I know everything will work without having to take out the small tool and adjust on the fly.

The SLR is easily one of the best adjustable gas blocks on the market.  But if you want the ability to adjust on the fly, the MicroMOA is what you want.

Thanks for all the help guys!  I've updated my list with parts I've ordered and things still to be ordered, mainly the stock and on which AAC to go with, blackout, brakeout, or muzzle break.  I think I'm a little afraid of the muzzle break to be used when running non suppressed.  Thinking about a brakeout 2...

I pretty much did what he said above.I adjusted my gas block to work with a wide range of ammo while still being reliable. You could easily turn it down enough to make it barely cycle anything but then its likely you would run into issues if you get a light load.I set it and then set the lock screw so I don't have to worry about it again

the brakeout is pretty much good at nothing. Its loud and doesn't cut much recoil while still keeping plenty of flash since its got a set of big ports.Either pick the full brake or the flash hider depending on which you need more

Noob question and probably obvious.

I'm (starting out with) a Magpul CTR collapsible stock on my Maten. Will I need to get a buffer tube assembly that includes a castle nut so as to properly orient the channel on the bottom of the buffer tube?

Yes. The end plate will orient the receiver extension properly and the caste nut with tighten it down.

Hey All:

Just wanted to update this thread with some new info that others will find helpful, and maybe upsetting...

The Armalite magazine catch is NO LONGER available to purchase, or at least by itself.  In fact, no Armalite parts are available for purchase.  The only way you are gonna get any part is to buy a complete parts kit.

Not willing to pay 60 bucks for the whole parts kit just for this one part, nor do I want to give them any business..

Sorry if this is common knowledge to all, but it sure wasn't to me.

Yeah...Armalite has been difficult since before the acquisition.  I love ArmaLite but they are, in some ways, a serious pain in the ass.  Colt, too.

I've been contacting the few Armalite vendors and asking them if they can confirm, and none of them seem to have a clue.  It appears Armalite hasn't told any of them.  They are just not fulfilling their orders.  I've spoken to a few so far and they did comment that it's been awhile since they've received anything from them.  I suppose some vendors might just buy the complete LPK's and break them up to sell parts individually, but as of now that's not happening.  I sure would be PIST if I had an Armalite AR10 and broke a spring or any part and they told me I would have to buy the complete LPK to get it.

I am glad now that I chose the DPMS route to build my MaTen, even though I hear a lot of gripe about DPMS quality.  I don't like supporting companies that treat customers like crap.

I just hope the DPMS magazine catch that I had to order functions well...

UPDATE:  I spoke to someone at DSG and they checked into this, and said that they were told this is not the case, and they should be receiving parts soon.  Hopefully this is true and I was told wrong.

Hey All:

I know this thread is pretty non active, but I'm hoping that from all of you who have built these Matens, that maybe someone could help me find a Panther Claw to buy used, rent, or something.  I couldn't find one on the EE.  Heck I can't find them available new.  I really hate to buy one new as I know I won't be ever using it again.  Anyone know of where I can find one?  If anyone has one and willing to let me borrow/rent it, please contact me.  From what I gather I need the .308 claw, not the AR15 claw, correct?

Anyways bummed I'm stuck in my build with no way to safely tighten my barrel nut..

So, the standard bolt catch and mag release from an AR15 lower kit will work?

I read conflicting things.  Also, if I go the DPMS bolt catch patch, do I need the DPMS bolt catch screw?

Sorry if it was covered and thanks!

the mag catch is standard ar15 and you will need to supply.  The bolt catch, i believe, depends on what you buy from mega.  I, for instance, bought a matching upper lower, the ambi version, along with a MML handguard.  Mine came with the bolt catch installed.  So if you don't have your upper yet, you should buy this first to see if it comes with the bolt catch.

I bought my lower from j&g and my upper from jse and the lower came with the bolt catch installed. As far as I can tell the lowers all come with everything needed installed except for the fire control components, magazine catch/spring/detent and the safety spring and detent.

No bother. That is what we are here for...gathering information. If you search, there is a very large thread on the SCR here in the site.

The upper is a Gibbz Arms with the matching extra long (15 1/2") hand guard.

I think I've got a build list for my Form 1'd MATEN lower.

Please let me know if there's been any personal experience with these working or not.

Rainer 12.5" ultra match barrel and BCG

Carbine length gas tube and Seekins low profile adjustable gas block

PSA MOE AR10 build kit: http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-pa10-moe-plus-black-lower-build-kit.html

I'll top it off with a 51T brake mount for my SDN-6.

Still trying to find a rail that will work with the gas block and suppressor, any recommendations?

Thanks

The only change j would make is switch to a SLR or Syrac gas block. They have locking detents so no screws to back out. Also, when you adjust, it's just one screw to turn.

As for the handguard, I would think any 11"-12" handguard would work.

fortis makes a 12" switch that actually measures 12.42" that might work.It will be really close if you use the deep socket style 51t mount and sdn6.I have the 14" version on mine with the seekins gas block and a 16" barrel and sdn6 its a pretty close fit overall. There aren't many options for short 308 rails so you might be forced to cut  a small amount off one

SLR makes some great rail options for short 308s. I used one of their standard offerings for mine and I love it. I  would also second their gas blocks. They are the buy once, cry once offering for adjustable gas blocks.
