Could someone please confirm that the 14" extended length Maten MKM rail will completely cover a standard gas block on a rifle length barrel?

I'm looking at using a .750 gas journal barrel and want to make sure the block will be covered and that I can get a Keymod rail piece mounted at the end of rail most likely right underneath gas block I suspect.

Thanks

Thank you. I have a MlOK rail on another set up and the gas block is at the end of rail and the MLOK mounting system intrudes too much to so for this one I will try Keymod. Appreciate your help. Do wish Mega made the Keymod version in 16" length like they do for the MlOK

I'm at the point in mine where I'm stuck between the SLR Solo 15" handguard and the Fortis Switch 15".

Anyone that's tried both have some pros and cons of each?

As of now, I'm leaning toward the Fortis since it's a bit lighter..

I've read segments of this thread over the last couple months and it's been a great resource!

WOO HOO!!!

Just ordered another JP barrel bolt and full mass .308 carrier.  SLOWLY getting this thing together!!!!!

Gonna run an 18 inch light profile JP, their bolt and carrier group.

Next up:  Griffin Flash Comp,  Slash Heavy Buffer w/ spring, AD Recon with some type of 1-4 or 1-7 scope...either Weaver or Leupold again......

Running an ALG QMS right now....it's ok for stock but will likely do an SSA on this one.  Probably another BAD ASS safety, too.  Good shtuff!!

It was the pictures of this gun that caused me to replace the old school cheese grater on my Noveske Afghan with that handguard.  Still doesn't have that cool little third hole, but I like the rifle a lot more now.

Slash's buffer and spring on the way.  Sights and Odin Works gas block, too!!!

Just gotta take the barrel and block to get them fixed to the barrel after I ensure the true position of the gas block port to the barrel port.

Here's mine about as it sits now. Mega 16" barrel, SLR adjustable gas block, 15" SLR ultralight rail, and Geiselle SSA.

The safety selector felt real mushy so replaced it with a VSeven titanium one which feels great.

I want to change out the muzzle device with something different.

Looking at the Precision Armament EFAB or SLR's comp though the latter would be even better in titanium.

I've only managed slightly over MOA with FGMM but I'm out of practice.

Hey, Nullogik...

How about a Griffin Flash comp?

Pretttty stylish and well received.  If you use something like a Surefire...WHEW, doggie...it will be LOUD!!!!

I have one on my 22 inch Mega and, Lordie goodness.....WHEW!  Works like a charm, though.

If you safety selector felt mushy, it was most likely a weak spring and/or a bad detent. I always use KNS detents for my builds, and springs from armalite, DD, or now BCM is getting their own stuff put out so i was gonna give them a shot next.

I had the Griffin flash/comp on my MaTen. Very awesome muzzle, very controllable. Was gonna get it again, but got a deal on the BCM comp and I'm glad i took the chance as i love this muzzle. Enough to replace everything i have with one, even the 556 which doesn't need it, but they work that good.

Of course, different shooting styles/techniques may not mesh well, but is great shooting off hand, off the knee, or propped up by bipod or something else. Straight back, sharp, stays on target for quick double or even triple taps. Might be a bit much on auto for the 308, but I don't have a fun switch.

The Griffin looks meaner, but i think the BCM flows well aesthetically with my armalite.

I was looking at the griffin as well. Pretty similar design to my not so experienced eyes. Definitely don't want a full out brake. I've got FSCs on my 556 ARs and that's got enough of a thump to it. I'd be lying if I didn't just really love the Y shaped ports in the PA EFAB

Though saving a few ounces right at the front end would be real nice too, that's why I'm hoping the SLR is released soon.
Anyone use one of their mini comps?

Maybe on the spring/detent. I'll look at them when I get home and compare the switch itself to another I've got sitting in my parts bin.

Was looking at the BCM comp as well, but steered away from that for reasons I can't remember at this time. May come back to it, because it wasn't all that expensive.

Would be nice to try all of them out on mine or on similar rifles, but that would cut into the ammo fund!

Although with the YHM that's on there now, it has less recoil than I was expecting.

SUCCESSSSS!!!  For once, one of my "precision" builds went "right" straight out of the gate.
I finally got my Mega Carbine out to the range today.  The "best" part of this is that, due to NO ONE making an optic with the options I really want right now, I ended up using some rather mediocre

optics on this build.  The rest of the gun is pure top notch.
The main reason that I went with such mediocre optics is that I just can't seem to make up my mind on how I want this build to run....or what I want it to do.  The beauty of the rail system, of course, is that Ic an pick and choose.

Well, I just couldn't make up my mind on what kind of optic I wanted....
Soooo, I stole the Zeiss Tera 4 X 12 from my Delta HBAR which, at this moment, is quite oddly running an night vision scope.   I tossed it in a PEPR mount that I keep around just as a test rig.  It's a one inch mount I never intended for anything. ...but it fit the bill.  The Zeiss was just to see how well I could get a carbine to shoot without having to fight anything.  For a dot scope ( which was more of my intention with this gun ) I picked a Vortex spitfire.  A decent rig for what it does but I ONLY bought the Vortex because no one else makes a decent ring reticl optic in 1 power that I liked.  Back up irons are MagPul steel flip ups.
The ONLY thing out of that bunch of just above average optics that let me down..............WAS MY OWN EYES.  Sadly, my 20/15 vision is a thing of the past.  The biggest problem I had today was being able to multi focus across separate planes.  That made me sad...but I am nearly 50...whatcha gonna do?
DESPITE my crappy eyes.....I was able to get excellent mathematically random distribution and very good repeatability.  In order to test the potential the best I could I used 2 minute diamond targets and a reduced 50 foot B27.
I started at 25 to get everything on paper.  I should have brought my spotting scope!!!!!!  Without that, I had to start where I cold see what I was doing. In each instance, I had zoom optics, irons and my red dot sighted in in a jiffy!!!
Once I zeroed everything at 25, I went to 50 yards and bumped up the Zeiss, I had a hell of a time getting target focus at that range due to my eyes....but I did the best I could.
I couldn't believe how well I did with my Vortex at 50 yards...despite the fact that it was like trying to shoot with Vaseline in my eyes!
Had I been using high dollar optics and if I had the right prescription glasses,  this thing would ROCK!
As it stands.....I can't believe how good I could do with my handicap!!!!
I did this with a Vortex, no ability to focus, a guy next to me with a 300 Ultra ( dear JESUS was that loud ) and the sun not in my favor and it was windy as hell!!!!

Note:  I had eight rounds of 165 Nosler BTs left.  I shot the first five shot group withOUT my reading glasses.  I tried the remaining three WITH my reading glasses.  LOL...big mistake!!!!
With the Zeiss..25 yards was too close for good focus and even fifty wasn't in my favor but this, again, is my eyes more than anything.  Still....using a smaller target that I had a ard time seeing....I still had great distribution.  I could shoot 3 shot groups...5 shot groups...7 shot groups.....everything was a JP Perfect as I could ask for.

Eventhe irons were great!!!!  ...and that was some fuzzy shooting!!!!

SO, mechanically.....I used some Federal Eagle 147 grain to tune the gas system.  This is a JP midlength barrel with an Odin Woks gas block and WMD tube.  I started at one click open and then proceeded to 9 clicks to give me positive function on a full magazine.  I did this bit by bit as I guided each optic in to a rough zero.
At 9 clicks, my primers are a bit flat but the rims look great and the firing pin showed no cratering.  gun runs with full mags with aplomb.
Softer handloads ran just great.  ( 40 grains of IMR 4064 pushing 165 grain Nosler BTs in this instance )
This gun is SOOOOOOOOOOOO smooth.

Earlier setup picture:

Compared to my Big Mega, I had NO issues with this build.  BUT, once "the Monolith" was "sorted out", that gun proves ( with a shooter with good eyes ) that great optics and great mounts take your performance to a much finer level.  Sadly I can't shoot my big Mega as good as my buddy.......because I REALLLLY need to get glasses!!!!!
Imagine if I had the optics and mounts on THIS gun that I have on my full size!!!!!!!!!
It could just about do this:

Which was done with Leupold optics, an American Defense Mount and very nice hand loads out of this gun:

General Bill of Material:
RECEIVERS:  Mega Arms ambi....UNMATCHED SET!  ( fit up even better than a matched set! )
BARREL AND BOLT HEAD:  JP 18 inch, mid length, light profile with matched bolt head.
CARRIER:  JP full mass, QPQ, stainless
TRIGGER:  Geissele  SSA
BARREL NUT AND HAND GUARD SYSTEM:  Apex 15 inch w. top rail and bipod rail
MUZZLE DEVICE:  Griffin M4SDII, 7.62 NATO Flash Comp  ( it rocks )
STOCK:  Magpul UBR with black moleskin cheek cover.
SAFETY:  B.A.D. Ambi
BUIS: MagPul steel, folding
OPTICS:  Japanese Zeiss Terra, 4X12 on a Burris PEPR and/or  Vortex Spitfire in Vortex mount ( low ).  NOTE ON OPTICS:  These are NOT the final optics for such a tremendous gun.  I would NEVER use such mediocre stuff on a working gun that cost even one third of what this cost me....but I just can't DECIDE on how I want to roll glass on this thing and it is driving me NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
BY THE WAY:  I did run this gun on our 300 yard gong at the Rio Solado Sportsman's club range.....and I punished it!!!!  I did have a bit better focus at long range and I was able to put every round right where I wanted it...EVERY time!!!!

Gentlepeople, first-poster here...

Planning a Maten PRS build. First time Mega, first time 308. 18" barrel (barrel, BCG yet to be determined). Bipod.

Strongly leaning towards an SLR 16" ION handguard. The "Hybrid" looks very interesting, can anyone suggest to me why the absence of a top rail (other than at the front, for back-up sight, and the rear) would be a bad thing?

More bluntly, what are the criteria influencing a choice between an ION HYBRID and an ION MID?

I have yet to use a top rail for anything but aligning the top rail to the receiver top rail. For me, a full length top rail has been a waste of money.  If anything, use a short top rail at the very front to mount a BUIS and one at 6 o'clock to mount a bipod.  ( ETA:  sounds like the Hybrid is just your ticket...only the rail you need and no more.  NICE )

Tip:  ADJUSTABLE GAS BLOCK.  Get one.

Yes I agree about the scope.  maybe down the line and after some range time.  I think that I made a mistake on the stock choice.  It is a little too long for my body and I am having trouble looking through the scope.

Nah, you got the right stock...just a the wrong mount...BUT that's okay....you can go to a cantilever mount and a good scope in due time.

It's all a learning process.  My .308s have taught me more abut the AR system than all of my 5.56 experience combined.

Here's a terrible pic of the "set screw" that keeps the rail cover from popping off every three or four rounds.  Took me all of ten minutes to do with the proper drill and 10 X 24 taps.

....and...last but not least......

just finished this one up today

Figured with all the shootings happening I should go ahead and make the big brother to my sbr. They would be identical in almost every way if geissele stopped dicking around and finished the 308 rails.I'm pretty happy with how it came out and should be able to get out this weekend to set up the gas system

basic specs are

mega maten ambi receiver set
ballistic advantage barrel and bcg
14" fortis switch
seekins adjustable gas block
geissele ssa
battle arms ambi selectors
kac backup sights
swfa 1-4 in an adm mount
51t mount for my can

Ok, next question.

I don't yet have a barrel/BCG selected. I will likely be using an SLR adjustable gas block. Is there any reason I should wait to order a spring/buffer (likely, based on reviews from the board, one of Slash's offerings.) Thoughts?

Get a Vltor A5 receiver extension, Tubb AR-10 spring, and use a standard H3 buffer or something in the 6oz range. Don't make it hard on yourself.

Ok I have a start of a build for my MATEN.

Upper/lower with MML rifle length
16" Mega barrel - ORDERED
LPK - still trying to understand exactly what I need out of a kit...don't like ordering a whole kit and only using a few items.
Larue Apeg AR-15 size -ORDERED
Trigger - Larue MBT-ORDERED
Stock - B5 Enhanced - ORDERED
BCG - RCA-ORDERED
slash XH buffer and spring - ORDERED
AAC Flash Hider or Muzzle Break,or Breakout...undecided
SLR Adjustable gas block + tube- ORDERED

The use of this firearm is pretty general.  I may do some hunting with it.  I may try out some long range shooting (600 Yards max).

Items to get

LPK - still trying to understand exactly what I need out of a kit...don't like ordering a whole kit and only using a few items.

Larue Apeg AR-15 size

Trigger - I'm thinking about trying a Larue MBT.  They are small pin only.  Is the MATEN a small pin receiver? ( YES.  The whole small pin/large pin thing is a Colt clusterfuck from the 90s and 00s.  Megas are small pin ) )

Stock - Probably going with a CTR or STR  ( give the Gen II UBR a thought )

For BCG, think I'll go with a complete RCA.  Seems there's a lot of iffy ones out there other than the pricey JP one, and I hear good things with the RCA.  They make it both with FA and without/fluted.  Guessing I should go no FA?

Since I'm probably going 7" buffer tube/AR-15 stock, it looks like I have to go the slash buffer/spring route.  Need to confirm, but probably the XH buffer since I will run suppressed at times.  ( Slash buffer's rock )

Flash Hider or Muzzle Break, that's the question.  See A LOT of muzzle breaks on here.  But I hear they are SUPER loud on shorter barrels.  With my 16" barrel, that concerns me.  Even though I do have a 762 SDN 6 suppressor, I won't be using it all the time. (FWIW: I'm running a Griffin 7.62 Flash Comp...much more tolerable in my 18 inch Jp as compared to the Surefire Two Chamber on my 22 inch JP barrel. )

Adjustable gas block - want one for sure.  Just haven't decided between JP, Syrac, SLR, Seekins... ( Don't forget Odin Works, another good option )

Thank you for your feedback

I do like the idea of the UBR gen II being a single unit/tube.  I'm sure it firms up the slop some, but how heavy, relative to other stocks are they?  It seems I hear those UBR stocks are heavy and many people swap them out, but maybe those are not Gen II.

Well it seems you are confirming my findings that muzzle breaks are not friendly unless suppressed.  Guess I need some more research and thought.  Thinking that if I was hunting, I wouldn't want/need the use of the suppressor due to added length and weight.  But at the range, well I guess I could run it suppressed most/all of the time.

16"

Ill also be running my sdn6 on it from time to time.I prefer the muzzle brakes due to the recoil reduction, but had the flash hider from my can sitting around so I ended up using it.I don't find the muzzle brake to be any worse on a 16" 308 than I do on my 10.5" sbr.
