I understand that........but if the MATEN is supposed to take ar lower parts why wouldn't one of the others work as well?

Because, the bolt catch/release is one of the few items that is not AR15 agnositc.  It's a specific/dedicated AR 308 part.  Thus, you need to use the 308 version.

Edit: I use the Phase 5 308 bolt catch and it works perfectly.  You'll be happy with it.

I'm sure it did, because like you said, they all do.  I'm guessing he wants to swap it out for an ambi one.

I wanna know what you think of that KAC brake.

I might be tempted to switch to that.

I took mine to the University of Dremel and got my feed ramps added.  I tried to find a cratex bit for it, but couldn't find it so I must used a mild grinder and went very slow.

I would not have done it at all but I had trouble with the long bullet profile of the 140gr Berger (my rifle is in 6.5 Creedmoor).  All other bullets fed fine without the ramps, but feed smoother now.

I'm getting ready to build my first .308 using the Mega Maten ambi set. Buffer question.... Is there any functional difference between a DPMS .308 CAR buffer that can be had for $25-$35 and one of the $99 buffers at heavy buffers.com that are referenced throughout this thread?

In terms of differences I don't know, but I'm using a DPMS .308 carbine buffer and .308 carbine buffer spring and it functions fine. This is with an AR-15 carbine buffer tube, 16" Rainier barrel and a Syrac adjustable gas block.

In short, DPMS has somehow come to define certain terms in the aftermarket .308 AR circles.  Their pre August ( I think ) 2009 uppers has a rail height that was taller than their current ( POST Aug 2009 ) offerings.  Lots of vendors now define their accessories as to whether they match pre or post August 2009 rail heights.

I got my matched set this week, very sweet stuff. Only draw back is that the upper is a matte finish and the lower is a gloss finish, which is very surprising since they are a matched set... Anyone else have this? I got my set from JSESurplus, sub 2000 serial. It isn't a huge issue, nothing functionally wrong with it, just looks odd.

That sounds kind of odd to me.  Maybe a customer "return" containing a swapped upper (or something along those lines) that simply slipped through JSE's return inspection?

Can you paint with an airbrush or HVLP gun?  I have had excellent results with Cerakote Graphite Black on HYPERCLEAN, mildly scuffed surfaces.
As such:

The P1 ( P-38 ) import pistols as you see here, have a phosphated slide and barrel with a smooth anodized, aluminum frame.  As an experiment, I cleaned the frame on this gun like mad.  Several washings, alcohol rinses and acetone soaks before, during and after lightly scuffing with a 3M Scotch Brite pad. It gives a bit of extra adherence but doesn't compromise the anodizing.  It has held up GREAT!!!  ( LOOKS A THOUSAND TIMES BETTER, TOO!!! )

There's a lot of answers to that question.  The consensus seems to be: either the Young .308 group or the JP Low Mass group......I went with CMMG carrier with a JP bolt that had been fitted to a JP barrel.  The JP bolt really snazzed up the fit of bolt to carrier as compared to the original CMMG bolt in it's parent carrier.  I keep the CMMG bolt head as a spare.

What I can't tell you is how my combo will perform.  BUT:  Considering that I did the same thing with a White Oak barrel/bolt head combo in a DSA carrier ( swapping the parent bolt head for the matched White Oak bolt head ) and had fantastic results...Magic Eight Ball says, "outlook is good".

Time will tell.   Maybe sometime this year I'll get my receivers......

Good luck with that. Been waiting for over 1.5 years for mine to ship. They have been a "few weeks out" for over a year.

JP is your best bet for a quality BCG. A standard phosphate carrier and JP bolt is the best way to get it done on the cheap.
I still don't trust these new companies turning out NiB BCG's.

I'm with you.  I think you and I discussed our frustration with Young's "call back in two weeks" stuff.  I gave up on them very quickly.  Bummed me out, I wanted a top quality BCG but i didn't want a low mass carrier...so I tosed a really good bolt into a fairly decent carrier.  We'll see how it works out.

I haven cleaned or lubed in a few hundred rounds. Im going to let her get dirty and see how long it takes to choke.

I don't see any problem with it.  It's at least a known quantity, unlike some of these other fly-by-night NiB shops.

I do the same thing.  i call it "fire lapping"...though that is an incorrect use of the term.  I definitely shoot my guns in.  Dirt and oil...dirt and oil....smooths 'em up right quick.

What's the difference between a low mass and full mass carrier?  Not sure what kind I need/want?

I'm going to go with JP Enterprises for my bolt/BCG

I am looking for a black bolt/BCG

Does a bolt & barrel need to be head-spaced for best fit on a .308?  It will be going on a 16" Mega barrel.
