Bummed to hear this, as I JUST finished my monolithic upper with a RA 18" SS barrel - haven't even shot it yet, and it's an orphan.  It turned out really nice, but I'm always considering the road less travelled.

Think I'll go browse the EE and see if I can get my $$ out of it.

I wonder if LMT has the stones to send a cease and desist to Colt, FN, HK, and another little guy.

They would get crushed.  Pretty slimy if you asked me.  I really like LMT, but this is a bad move I think, especially since they have had so much success, and there is no confusion on the difference between the Mega uppers, and theirs, especially when you start sourcing barrels.

I had my own design for a monolithic upper system back in 1999.  I was vindicated when LMT introduced the MRP years later, although mine was different.

Just finished my Mega build. I have two issues id like to correct.
1) Bolt catch is not catching bolt (Rock River) any suggestions on one that works without fitting.....gunsmith told me it was just a hair to small ( I have an extra bolt catch im going to put in from rock river ill try tonight)
2) I put on a seekins precision adj gas block.....to line up the dimple for the first set screw the gas block is flush with the "delta ring stop of the barrel" by doing this it slightly covers the brass adjustment screw and im not able to adjust it, any ideas?

Id also like to know if you guys have any recommendations for someone that could mill the barrel down just a hair in front of the brass adj screw and mill the rail just a bit to allow for easier access to  adjustment screw thanks

I have built a couple Ma-Ten builds and have used the DPMS 308 bolt catch with no problems and no need to do any fitting.

I was hoping to build an ambi lower rifle length upper 308 with 18" barrel to match my ARs.  guess that is out.  sucks

don't know who it is, but colt looks a lot like it––I hear from several different forums it might be Vltor .  How can Vltor claim rights to it other than maybe the name seeing how the barrel nut, upper and lower shield are totally different––

they are nice uppers.  I love them, they can be difficult getting a really tight barrel into the reciever, but with some patience my installs worked out ok but what happens now if there is a warranty or other issue.  guess out of luck

You can still build an MATEN rifle, just not a monolithic upper.  And I'm sure Mega will still offer warranty service on their parts no matter what.

Does anyone know the serial number of the last Maten Monolithic Quadrail set shipped or sold? I have the 3X (thirty something) one made. Seria No. MA0003x I've decided to keep it NIB for the time being. I'm thinking there were probably less than 50 sold since they halted sales about 3 weeks after I received mine. I believe they are and will continue to be very rare. This is the carbine length. ––RR

ok I tried to read through and see if it was covered or not and couldn't find anything. Im building my MATEN and and going to go with the DPMS SASS barrel because of accuracy.

My question is whether I can order another manufacturers gas block ( .936) for that barrel.

I have a Daniel Defense 12in lite rail, will the dpms .936 micro Gas block fit under the rail or will it be to high?

Will the micro gas block even work on the SASS barrel or will the gas tube not line up?

Thanks for the help guys I appreciate it.

You can use any .936 gas block that will fit under the DD rail.

OK guys, i just finished reading this entire thread from beginning to end. Im piecing together parts for my MATEN build. So far, ive gathered that most are going with DPMS style bolt and barrel as i will be doing. what im having issues with is i want to have an extra long quad rail. im talking upwards or 14". I want it to have all 4 rails. i do not really care for the top rail only with the rest of it rounded or smooth. so that counts out the TRX series. i see that troy makes a 13.8" MRF-RX free float rail. i believe its a 2 piece. it would be perfect for my intentions but i see so much back and forth that im scared to pull the trigger on it. I also see that they make several other quad rail so here is my list and then my question!

Receiver: Mega MATEN Ambi upper/lower

Barrel: Rainier Select 18" dpms style

Rail: Troy MRF-RX 13.8" ????? or Battlerail Bravo?? or MFR 308??? (as i look over their website, i realized i overlooked the MFR 308. i have been eyeing the MRF-RX, but still, same question applies)

Gas block: something low pro to clear the rail! probably troy.

gas tube: regular mid length i guess? rainier says dpms style so i guess thats my ticket.

BCG: DPMS or equivalent

Will any of these rails work with this setup? i see some people making special rails for the DPMS and armalite styles and i see some rails not working. if anyone has any info on this setup i would greatly appreciate it. I am just really particular and i want to find the perfect parts since this is as close to a dream build as i can get. I love the Rainier rail that is cut out like the mega monolithic but they apparently dont make a 13" anymore and i think 11" is too short for the look that im going for. Ive seen the daniel defense rails but i really dislike that clamp.. it just looks odd having all those screws. plus DD is more $. troys is cheaper and i think it looks better. I also like the Seekins cutouts but i think those are just for 5.56 rifles. not 308 platforms. ive considered samson but im not too keep on the silver push button under the rail. dont get me wrong, they look cool. i just would hate to but it and not really like it. i gotta make these purchases count because i have little room for error or setback concerning $.

Just getting started on my Maten, managed to find myself a monolithic upper, and picked up a stripped lower.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/579016_4658883078628_330250873_n.jpg

Working first on the lower:
From Rock River: (if I missed anything I need here, please let me know. First time building)
Mag release button, Catch spring, Catch
Bolt Catch spring, Plunger
Buffer retainer, retainer spring

DPMS .308 bolt catch (from Rainier Arms, specifically states in product description that it functions with the Maten)

Geissele Super Semi-Auto trigger assembly
BAD-ASS selector

Magpul MOE+ pistol grip
Magpul UBR Buttstock
CAR-10 Buffer+spring (from Slash's Heavy Buffers)

Plans for the upper:
DPMS barrel, haven't settled on a brand yet, but probably going 20"
DPMS BCG

And looking for suggestions on everything else. I'm building it as a precision rifle.

Please don't ask me how much they cost me. I really don't know, and don't really want to think about it!!! Ha-ha.

Just put my deposit down on a MATEN ambi set, should be here before the end of the month.

I do have a few questions, which I figured I should ask here

BCG (I know its mostly preference, I even counted the builds in this thread 17 armalite 16 dpms)

Armalite
PRO
spring retained firing pin
6 lug design is balanced
better extractor design???(seen this mentioned)

CON
more options

DPMS
PRO
coating options
availability

CON
floating firing pin
unbalanced 7 lug design
extractor issues?

any one had extractor issues with dpms or know why some say the armalite extractor design is better?

BARREL

looking at Rainier Select vs Ultra Match

it seems that everyone considers the Ultra Match to be superior but they both have a sub moa guarantee. I know Shilen blanks are very highly regarded but so is Noveske which uses the same PacNor blanks as the select. The Select also uses a 5R polygonal rifling like Noveske, the Ultra Match has traditional Ratchet. When I wrote Rainier their response on why the UM was more accurate was "The rifling and blank will be more consistent and have more bite to spin the bullet. The Poly will have a slightly longer barrel life."

It makes sense the sharper rifling would grab more in terms of bullet rotation, but isn't this also the main argument for poly rifling. More bite mean more bullet deformation which can affect accuracy. Barrel life is always a positive too.

It seems like a wash or a very minimal gain in theory

I have 2 builds going right now and a question about one of them. I'm Using a DMPS bolt with a Rainier barrel. The only Troy 13.8 rail's I can find in stock right now are for the armalite, so can I use a armalite nut on my barrel and get the troy rail that fits it? Or am I going to have to wait until the DPMS comes back in stock?

Here's the second build (although it's changed some since this picture):

It may be more functional.

It may not be in conflict with LMT's mono patent.

But the old mono tubular was SOOOOO much prettier.

Got a question for you guys. I was installing my 6.5 creedmoor barrel from fulton armory (lr308 pattern) into  my maten mono today and when I installed the gas tube (ar15 rifle length) and gas block it doesn't seem to go into the receiver as far as my ar15. The barrel has a rifle length gas system and I had adco dimple the barrel for my set screw gas block so everything will line up. Barrel nut was torqued to 50 ft/lbs. I don't have a lr308 bcg to test with yet. Do you guys think it will be a problem.

Mine is a mid- length, so I can't say, but Maga Arms says to keep the same pattern with barrel, bolt, and gas tube. I know some here have mixed them, you could try it.

I have a JP Low Mass Bolt Carrier Group and my Mega Monolithic Upper's Dust Cover just barely snaps shut...and if you jar the rifle at all, I mean at all...it will pop open.  The problem is even more pronounced when a mag is inserted since it puts a bit of up pressure on the BCG....anyone else experience this...is it to be expected or is it abnormal?
