Is anyone but me having problems using Sierra 90 gr BTHP in pmags? My c.o.a.l. is 2.254 but the little triangle shaped piece of plastic at the front of the magazine is making significant contact with the bullet.
It works fine in a normal aluminum mag. Also, is anyone who is using the Redding 25x45 dies having problems with the seating die not going down far enough to seat Barnes 80 gr TSX and 90 gr Sierra BK's to magazine length? Thanks, |
TW10,
I am not having any problems with Pmags, but I only use the 10 round. I also have 30 round lancers that are not an issue either. I'll look at my coal tonight. I don't have the stats with me. I use a 223 seating die. It leave a little mark on the bullet, but does not seem to be a problem. Sorry I could not be more help. |

German Shorthair. I have her started on birds, but she is sidetracking on squirrels and now hogs. She may be a triple threat yet.

Just a quick deer vs. 25/223 BDA for those interested.
Took a nice doe during the WI antlerless-only herd control season with the 25/223 this past Saturday. Snowing and about 15*F. She was about 110yds standing broadside. Load was 100gr Sierra BT over 24.5gr AA2200; 20 inch bbl. Chronographed at 2740fps over my Chrony. Owing to the very light recoil/report of this round I was able to observe the deer's reaction and actually heard the bullet impact...reminds one to be careful around guns. Jumped straight up and then ran perhaps 50-75feet before piling up. Postmortem showed the bullet reduced the heart to shreds, except for the very bottom "point", as well as significant lung damage and complete through-and-through penetration with a quarter-sized exit wound. Sorry, no pics of the critter as she is becoming sausage/chops as I write this. I'd like to try Hornady 117gr RN next year. Mmmmm....sausage.... |
BTW thanks, Tammons, for the barrel. The 25/223 has become my go to rifle for vermin on the acreage.

Two more deer this morning with the 25/223. They were both at the 225+ mark and traveled roughly 40 yards before dropping. Both shot in low shoulder and both bullets exited. Total devastation of the heart region. Took a shot at 300 yds, but I think I shot under that one. They cross the road very quick and there is not a lot of time to calculate yardage. Excellent performance again with the Hornady 100 gr SP's. Powder was AA2200 with Winchester Brass and Rem 7.5 primers.

Hi SCPossum1,
Congratulation again on a job well done. How long does your season run? Thanks for sharing the information on the bullet performance. The 110 g Hornady spire point interlocks are devastating. It looks like Altair's gel test on the 100 gr Sierra GK bullets is pretty representative on 100 gr cup and core type bullets. Originally Posted By Altair:

It seems that this is a cartridge that punches above its weight. Again, thanks for sharing this information. |

Does anyone have a listing of all the load data scattered throughout this thread? If not ill start from the beginning and read all the way through again.
Has anyone tried imr 8208xbr? I use this for my 223 loads and have several pounds of it on hand. Having trouble finding h335 or RL7. |
An easy way to do it is to make the entire thread into a pdf and then it will be searchable. Takes about an hour or two, but it is handy. I started working on a load file, but have not finished it yet. Maybe someone has beat me to it and will share.
How do i make the entire thread in to a PDF? I can make a google doc of all the load data
I use adobe pro and paste the each page's link into the adobe "create file from webpage". Then adobe makes a pdf out of the page. I then combine all the pages into one pdf file and end up with the whole thread in one pdf that is searchable.
Well i liked your idea but didnt have adobe pro. instead, while using chrome, i installed the AutoPager extension. This will auto load the next page of a forum when you get to the bottom of the page. After lots of scrolling, it had the whole thread loaded. I then hit ctrl+p and printed to a pdf. Took about 10 minutes. Thanks for the idea!

somebody sent me a ton of data, I found it
send me an email and I'll send you the file. it's not all inclusive but has a lot of info i used in developing a load. |

I called Western Powders and this was the reply. The employee was very nice and checked on the supply in SC in a timely manner. "Hello, Per our telephone conversation this morning, I have searched for Accurate 220 powder for you. Unfortunately, I did not have much luck. Your best bet would be to check with the online dealers, Powder Valley at www.powdervalleyinc.com, 1-800-227-4299; Graf and Sons at www.grafs.com, 1-800-531-2666; or Wideners at www.wideners.com, 1-800-615-3006. If you or anyone is willing to travel that far, one other option would possibly be to check with The Shooting Shop in Clarksville, TN (I know – it’s quite a distance!). Good luck in your search." |

Hey guys, it has been a while since I have posted. But I have reached a new milestone with the caliber. Using a combination of a modified PRI mag to allow COAL of 2.3 (had to file the internal ribs), low mass carrier system, and adjustable gas block I am getting true and safe 2950 fps out of my 20" with the Sierra 90 gr game king. I have pictures to prove it on my phone, and I will be posting it soon. I am going on a javelina hunt next week with this rifle and load, so I hope to have some terminal performance data. I did get to higher speeds, but it was getting dangerous. This load is also producing sub-MOA three shot groups with my rifle.
I believe using a 6.8 mag with a 223 follower will work with this caliber, but I haven't tested it yet. The PRI mag allows 2.3 COAL in the 6.8 mag too, so this would be an easy solution, vs the modifying I had to do with 223 PRI mag to get it to work. But these ballistics (90 gr at 2950, 20" brl) completely puts this caliber in the 250 Savage class, considering the 250-3000 (250 Savage) was made famous by launching an 87gr at 3000 but out of a 22-24" bolt action. A longer throat would definitely be an advantage with this caliber, seating at 2.3. And that COAL is essential for maximum performance and increased bullet selection. I am using AA2200 but don't want to post the charge because it is dangerous unless seating to 2.3. |

Question.
Is the 16in brl running a rifle length gas tube? How would a 20in brls dwell time have an affect on accuracy, if any? This thread alone has made me want to try this wildcat. Tons of info. And I am sure my questions was posted some where in the thread. But I am sure i missed that page. |
Not sure about the 20. I have a 16.5 barrel with a mid gas system. By far one of my favorite guns.
Hi Ekalb2000,
I have made 16.5 in. barrels with both carbine and mid-length gas systems. In 16.5 in barrels, the mid-length barrels the dwell time is more optimum than the carbine length systems. So I do not recommend carbine length gas systems for 16.5 in barrels. I have also built several 20 inch barrels and they run fine with a rifle-length gas system. The dwell times for the 20 inch 25-223Ar are similar to the dwell times of a 20 in. the 5.56x45. For example, below are direct comparison of 25 cal and 5.56 cal bullets (from 20 in barrels) typically used in both calibers. As you can see, the muzzle velocities are similar hence the dwell times are also similar. 25-223Ar: 75g Vmax 3200 fps 5.56x45: 55g 3200 fps 25-223Ar: 100g SBT 2700 fps 5.56x45: 77g 2700 fps Thanks for you interest 320pf Originally Posted By Ekalb2000:

I have returned from the hunt with no kills unfortunately. However I have discovered that the throat on this chamber is too short for safely seating to 2.3; I had some issues with chambering and extraction that I figured out was due to the bullet being shoved into the lands. Because maximum performance using the 223 case is my goal, I am going to re-chamber this rifle.

Are you going to re-chamber or extend the throat?
You are correct that if the throat was a bit longer, the 90 g Sierra HPBT could be seated out further. GIve me a call and we can look into getting a throat reamer for those that want to extend the throat on their chambers. 320pf |

I have pushed the 25-223AR to its absolute max, and since I now plan to load to a min of 2.3, the shorter case neck of the cartridge isn't needed. Ideally I want to use the old DPMS VLD single stack mags that use the nook in the back of the mag for a 2.45 COL, but they are hard to find, so I might have to fabricate one. The 25-223AR is a great cartridge for what it is, a simple cat to get more performance than 223. But for hunting, I want to improve the performance that's possible with this cartridge. |

320pf,
Thank you for the info. Whats you thoughts on an 18brl with the rifle length gas system? Just trying to split the difference. But dont want to do it at the expense of it functioning properly. |

Hi Ekalb2000,
I have built several 18-in barrels with mid-length gas systems and people seem to be quite happy with them. If I remember correctly, wombat25 is running an 18 in mid-length system. So, if you want an 18 in. barrel I would recommend a mid-length gas system. 320pf Originally Posted By Ekalb2000:

Would any of you guys be interested in having a throat reamer made that would increase the length of the throat? The longer throat would allow bullets to be seated deeper (as in 2.30 without hitting the lands) which would allow more powder to be used. Even at the 2.26 length, the longer throat would drop pressures allowing for a higher margin of safety for max loads. It would also increase the variety of bullet types that can be used.
The reamer would be a hand tool that anybody could use provided you have a vice, so you would not need to send your barrel to a machinist. Any interest? |

So, no more trimming cases?
I think that just increases the throat and not the actual chamber. If you seat the bullet to 2.26 the bullet would have a little more of a jump to the lands. That would decrease the pressure of the round, I think. If you seated out further, you would have the ogive of the bullet closer to the lands giving you a little more room for larger bullets and/or powder. Is that what we are talking about Chewbacca?

It should have no effect on the trim length of the cases. |
