I can use the .458 SOCOM to hunt deer in Indiana under the new "Pistol Caliber" Rifle rule, since it meets the parameters of case length and bullet diameter.  Can't do that with a .50 Beowulf or .450 Bushmaster.

I picked up a RRA LAR-458 (16in bbl, fixed A2 stock, free-float alum. fore-end) at the Indy gun show on Sat.  Ammo was unavailable (sold out before I bought it.)  I have a couple of boxes from MidwayUSA coming this week.  Can't wait to let 'er fly.

Not sure what you mean by mag mods. the 458 uses satndard 223 mags, just the larger 458 wont double stack they say a 223 30 rounder will hold 10  rounds of 458

All I did to mine was radius a semi-circle in the front of the mag where the bullets feed from. I don't think it was entirely necessary as I am able to feed ammo from an unmodified magazine with no jams. Tested ammo included the 300gr jhp, 405gr jsp, and 500gr solids. The 300gr JHP length and profile makes it somewhat problematic for feeding but if crimped in place there should be no setback or jams.  For the record, 15 rounds single-stacked in a 40rd mag.

edited: The 40rd mag I have is using the regular green follower. I tried the blue single-stack follower and it didn't make any significant changes in feeding. The magpul follower is in my radiused mag from c-products and it is somewhat easier to load in comparison to the green tilting ones.

What brand 40 round mag do you have?  THe ones I have read about contain reviews with people not happy with their reliability

I read on the Teppo Jutsu page that the twist rate of 1 in 14 was better for the heavier bullets (500-600 grain) with the .458 SOCOM.  I saw that some people on here who have used the .458 SOCOM's entire range of bullet weights with what I am assuming to be the 1 in 14 twist.

Is the 1-14 twist upper that RRA sells sufficient for the lower weight bullets or is there an option to choose your rate of twist when ordering?

For those that have the slower twist, is there any difference in accuracy when using lighter bullets or not enough to matter?

14 twist is REQUIRED for 500 and 600 gr

14 twist DOES NOT degrade accuracy with any other loads, as low as 86 gr ....

14 twist is the all around best twist to use for this caliber

What bullet/load in 458 SOCOM, has the longest effective distance for a deer or maybe an elk? My bud wants to to come to Montana for some hunting and I can't afford another rifle. Anyone try out the Lehigh 458-100, 220, 300 bullets yet? Anyone recommend reloading dies for the 458S. Pros and cons? Are the 86 gr bullets avail?
Thanks.

I changed things around a little on the 458.
RRA upper, LCW lower, RRA 2 stage, Enidine buffer, ergo grip, A1 stock, EO 552 and an old thermold mag.

I took it out for a quick sight in and this configuration seems to work well with Reed's 300g.

Sig,

The easiest way to think about the Socom is figure it to be about like a 45-70.  A tad slower than a Guide Gun, but faster than a Trapdoor.  Deer is a no brainer, any load should work.  For elk, I would stay with either a premium 250 or 300 grain bullet, or most any 400 grain bullet.  I have heard lots of good things about the 350 grain Speer bullet, although my hunting loads are either Barnes or Nosler Partitions, in 300 grains.  You just have to take note that there are two classes of 458 diameter bullets. 45-70 class (usually FP) and 458 Wim Mag class, which tend to be on the pointy side.  The difference usually being the velocity envelope for the bullet expansion.

Most of the guys using these like the Hornady Dies.  The Lee's will work, but leave a bit to be desired.  The CH are probably the best, but are also the most expensive.

One gent on the 458S forum is selling his stash of the Barnes Banded Solids that we had run last year(?).  It is a 330 garin Banded solid, and if your game regs allow this type of bullet it would make a mean elk round.  It would behave just as a Hard Cast lead bullet, with zero chance of bullet failure.  I have a load worked up with my batch that will literally put 3 into the same hole on the bench at 100 yards.

HELP!!!  I'm new to this site.... I just finished reading all 11 pages and I STILL don't know which is better, the 50B or the SOCOM.... I like the idea of being able to switch out uppers and plan to buy one or the other soon. The $$$ is burning a hole in my pocket and I have the wife's OK.... I wish to avoid any and all feeding problems as a first priority.  HELP!!!
Link Posted: 8/6/2008 12:35:36 AM EDT
[#14]
Thanker,

I would not worry a whit about feeding.  The 50B, 450B and the 458S all are proven working platforms.

The only thing that I can suggest to help is to make up a priority list of features, and then check them off and decide.  The reason being is that all have subtle differences.

The list would be along these lines:

1) Am I going to reload
2) How expensive is ammo to buy if not reloading
3) How available is ammo
4) Do I want special mags, and is mag capacity a concern
5) Am I punching paper or hunting, and do I need flexibility in ammo choices or reloading components

This would just be a start, as all of the big bores differ somewhat on these points and others.

Craig

PS: I'd buy the 458S, but that is a biased opinion

My .458 SOCOM is 100% reliable with the 405gr JSP loads. Its also 100% with the 500gr FMJ loads. I haven't properly evaluated the 300gr JHP's yet. I'm using C-Products' 10rd .223 mag as well as a usgi 40rd mag. The 40rd mag is using the regular green follower and the c-products uses a magpul follower.

Here's some more bullets, all are "factory" loads bought from either Midway USA or Ron Reed.
This demonstrates the variety of projectiles available to 458 "users" vis-a-vis 50 Beowulf "users".

Ok, let me if I have this correct. I take my Colt and remove the upper. Install a RRA .458 SOCOM upper and I am ready to go. Will I need to change the buffer or the buffer spring?
Link Posted: 8/27/2008 3:38:09 PM EDT
[#20]
You don't need to change the buffer or spring. RRA provides heavier springs with their uppers, one for carbine and one for rifle length tubes, but it will still function fine with the regular carbine buffer & spring.

My rifle is set up for the field but I haven't taken it out hunting yet. Been bed ridden for 2 weeks so all I've been doing lately is posting here and loading ammo.

For now I'm using iron sights, I put the MI flip up on the gas block and an ARMS #40L for the rear. If I had to do it over again I'd probably get a middy or rifle length rail system and troy irons. I plan on putting a leupold mark 4 2.5-8 MRT on the rifle.
My rifle's intended quarry are hogs and maybe black bear one of these years. The stock I went with is the VLTOR e-mod, I love it and it works great for me. I was torn between that one and the ACE ARFX stock. The Ace stock is probably the best choice for the .458 socom. It has the nicest recoil pad of any stock I've seen, and the foam tube that slips over the buffer is very comfortable to shoot with. Since it is a fixed stock you don't have to worry about it collapsing from the recoil. That being said, my vltor stock is holding up fine. Still under 1000 rounds through the gun though.

so, I been reading and it seems the .458 is for me since you don't have to run different mags (right?) and I ljust ove RRA. But, which ammo is easier to find, 50 or 458?

You dont use different mags for the Beowulf.

Hi guys,  I'm new to the Forum and was wondering if you could shoot cast bullets out of the AR platform for these calibers?  I am really leaning towards buying the .458 Socom for the same reasons many have stated "ammo selection".  Although the .50 would take care of anything I hunt.  I think I like the Socom a little better.  Anyways is it a good Idea to use the cast bullets in the big bores or not?

Yes,
I shoot cast out of the 50 Beo, without any issues.  I consulted with Bill Alexander prior to doing so and suggest anyone talk to him first, before trying it.  There is a sweet spot where pressure/leading/fouling is not an issue and Bill helped me find it.

Dang, wish I could find that loading data - hmmm?

Palladin,

There are folks using cast with the 458S, as well.  And Splittinghairs is correct, it does require a little work to find a proper combination.  I have had good results with premium Hard Cast bullets ( Cast Performance), and poor luck (so far) with Lasercast.  I think I was running the Lasercast a bit too fast.  They were shooting fine as to no leading, but accuracy has been poor.

Thanks guys,

I shoot cast performance out of my .45 colt and they are great rounds.  It says on their website they can be pushed to 3100fps without leading issues.  I would think they would work great for plinking and for deep penetration shots on heavy boned animals.

I chose 458 precisely because of ammo selection, though once I get back to CONUS I'll be handloading most of my stuff. At that point I will really begin to enjoy a far bigger range of bullet choices vis-a-vis the 50 Beowulf.

I strongly suggest a 458, I love mine (thanks Marty!).

Mack over at MGI may have some 458 SOCOM barrels left, which might be made by Marty...
I can't say enough good stuff about Marty and his work, its more than worth the wait, and I am not just saying that because I am stuck here in Riyadh for another 4 months.

I've been considering the .458 or the .50 Wulf for some time and the mag capacity has always been an issue.

Then it hit me: Why not buy a piston .308 with long range, 200 yrd flat trag and all sorts of stopping power in a carbine set up (POF P-308 16.5") and it's great.

Then for REAL 100 yrd or less punch I'm using an 870 Tactical with a Remington 20" fully rifled barrel. The friggin Sabots will stop a truck and I'm packing as many round as a Beowulf!

Shotshells will dominate the big hit rounds of the future, just watch. The DOD is working on shotshell tech like crazy.

Just look at the ballastics on Remington Sabot, it's sick...

The initial weapon cost is over $1000.00 less!

people are punching 700+ yds with the .458 socom....

I own a benelli supernova tactical which is essentially a slug gun for me, especially since I located a sabot choke for it....  it does pack a punch but does not offer the versatility of the .458....

Two totally different designs, dimensionally-speaking.  The .308 lower is significantly larger than the 5.56 versions that derive from it.  (The AR-15/M-16 was derived from the AR-10).
