The only coupons I see  now are $99.99. Nothing online that I can find.
I just received one in a flyer today.

I find them in Field and Stream, Bassmaster, gun magazines, Back paclker, etc.  Swin by someplace with a good magazine rack (B&N) and flip through the magazines like those until you find one.  A few bucks for a magazine and a nice discount on a generator.  The current Bassmaster does NOT have tha 2 cycle included in two pages.

Thanks for the replys.

I did a little snooping and found this one in Motor Trend Magazine for a price of $89.99.

86918177

I tried it on the Harbor website, and it reduced the price in my cart to $89.99 and allowed me to go through the checkout with $6.99 shipping.  I think the coupon code is valid through 4/25/2013.

I am toying with the idea of ordering another one if they have a free shipping deal anytime soon.  The coupon states that it is not usable with any other coupons, so the free shipping one would not work, but they seem to have free shipping every once in a while.

I noticed today that the blue 49 states version is "In store" only -- I wonder if the red CARB one is the future.

Mine, the red top "California Emissions" version, either has a modified or different engine.  The spark plug that comes in it is a colder heat range, I think.

They're only one heat range apart, though, so in all likelihood you can run either one in either engine.  You might just get a little more fouling on a cold plug in the blue-top unit's engine.

I can't remember if I've already posted this - but anyway, here's an interesting video of one of these little generators after being torn down:

Also describes a couple of minor carb tweaks for improving the ease of starting in very cold weather.

My buddy just sent me the red StormCat from HF two days ago.  There are some differences between blue and red, which are mentioned in the red reviews on HF's site, but they're more to do with fastener size.  There is a fuel mixture screw on the red, that isn't on the blue, from my research.

The metal contact on my spark plug was loose a bit, but I was already going to get the NGK plug and do the fuel filter mod, as found in this link, so the cheap plug isn't an issue, but it is cheap:

HF 63cc Gen mods

Some guys are running 30:1, or 32:1, instead of 50:1 and my buddy gave me the pros/cons of doing so.  We settled on a compromise of 40:1 when I start break-in on Monday (I'm in a condo, so it's not easy to run this thing for 25 hrs.).  Also, get the marine/outboard 2 stroke oil with TC-W3 added:  Super-Tech OUTBOARD at ChinaMart is what I got and it's $2.50 for 16oz.

Also, if you look at the red's (possibly on blue) choke plate, you'll see a neat ~1/16+" hole that one guy filled up with a little machine nut/bolt (Loctited) and his unit ran better, but that's something I'll fiddle with down the road, after break-in.

Some guys were able to run 1000w appliances with theirs, while others had some issues.  Not a Honda, Yammie or Robin Subaru, but ya get what ya pay for.

Hopefully, this thing will work out well for my limited needs.

Chris

Oh yeah? Well WE had almost a full INCH of snow, and MY generator is keeping the shelf in place very nicely.  Top that!

In all seriousness, there are a reported 650,000 people without power as a result of this storm.   Very glad to have multiple methods of heating and a generator in case things do go south on us.

I have to say that I am pretty impressed with the used unit that I bought in Ebay, once I replaced the leaky fuel tank, put in an Autolite 64 plug and put a good quality fuel line on it.

I've put about 3 tanks through it (prior hours on unit unknown) and this thing barely sips fuel. I filled the tank with 1 gallon of 93 octane with 50:1 ACE brand synthetic 2 stroke oil, and have been using a small heater set to 600w nominal to put a load on it. At that nominal load, it will now run  7 hours before the fuel gets low enough that I pull the plug. I am astonished at that run time for that load. It's putting out 110v at that load at the end of a 10 ft. 12 gauge cord.

That's pretty darn close to the 0.2 gal/Kw-h benchmark that a moderately loaded 4 stroke generator averages.

Hey, thanks for stopping in again and letting us know your opinion hadn't changed since page 7, when you had a different screen name. Same avatar, sig line and join date, though.

Thanks to all you guys who have posted helpful tips on these, especially the spark plug cross references. I have given one as a gift, kept one and considering buying another for my brother: His backup heat is a pellet stove, and though it's on a UPS, I don't think it'll last a week. This little guy will be the ticket for keeping his family warm.

Well, I went ahead and ordered one of these and got it today . Did everything I've read, changed the plug , used good gas , sprayed staybil fog into the cylinder before I even pulled the cord .

It ran for 10 minutes before locking up completely.

Must have forgotten to mix a little oil with the gas.

Two cycle engines will do what you found out every time if you don't.

If you hadn't sprayed snake oil into the engine first, it would've locked up a lot sooner.

No, I mixed it...lol. I guess I forgot to say that, but I did. 50:1 just like it says .

ETA: I just went out and pulled to see if it was free again, it is but is VERY jerky . Something is fucked up in this thing .

When I started it up initially , I let it run for about 10 minutes, and it died a few times in that period . I would  just restarted it and it would run awhile and stop . When I had it running for 10 minutes or so straight I hooked up 3- 60 watt light bulbs . It shut down like it had something really dragging it down after a few minutes ( like 1-2 maybe ) . We went through this about 4 times before it locked up this last time.  Like I said, it does turn over now ( have not tried to start it ) , but it's going back tomorrow . Glad I didn't go through the trouble of putting the fuel filter on it before I checked it, but I knew I was rollin the dice ....

I just used this code for a Red Genny and it still works.

For my purposes, I'd like the little generator to run a little pump so that I can suck water out of a nearby river and use it to water a whole bunch of trees that I recently planted not too far from the bank.  I'm not so sure how well my little plan is going to go, but I think it should work.  We also have a full basement at the house and this combo would be cheap insurance to make sure that the basement wouldn't flood if a sump pump went down.

Question.

<----- I'm over here, and the only fuel I can get is charcoal & charcoal lighter fluid.  Will this little thing run on charcoal lighter fluid?  Not well, not smoothly, but run?  My other option is to build a steam engine from a kit : )

From HOC Industries:

Attached is the MSDS for the Exchange Select brand of Charcoal Lighter Fluid we sell to AAFES.  Since it is petroleum distillates as it states on the MSDS that would be a white gas product.

Hmm, some octane booster, some two stroke oil, & it might work : )

From my own experience, I  used my  little HF genny  to run a 3/4 hp  submersible pump in my neighbors flooded basement.   We pushed the water up a staircase,  out a window and into a storm drain without problem.

The generator ran without a hiccup,  and averaged about 6 hours of run time per gallon ( it ran for over 24 hours continuously,  only stopping to refuel and check the plug after 12 hours).

I haven't made the purchase yet.  I've been slacking because I was trying to figure out how to get the discount from the website, but pick it up locally on my way home.  The code still shows up in the cart as having the discount applied.  Right now the river is up about 10 feet from where it normally would be so I've got plenty of time before I "need" to get water to the trees.

**I stopped by the local HF over lunch and they had the blue generator on the shelf.  I didn't make the effort to ask anyone in the store if I could get the onilne discount in the store.  I know I could read through all 30 pages again to rediscover what the difference between the red top and blue top generators is, but if someone could sum it up for me that'd be awesome.

I've got the spark plugs purchased online and heading towards the house.  While I was at the store and looking at the fuel line I was amazed that guys were replacing it and putting in a line that has a fuel filter on it.  That fuel line was so short I didn't seen that there'd be enough room for a good enough filter to actually make a difference.  I'm going to lean towards skipping that step, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

I'm probably just going to go ahead and buy the generator & pump off the website unless anyone has a reason why I shouldn't.

I never would have thought to try it, but googling around shows some people have used it successfully in small engines:

Definitely not the most cost-effective way to run one, but it should work.  Load up a power strip with battery chargers to maximize every second of runtime!

Thanks for the link.  Sounds like it might work - hey, it's my $79!  However, I is discouraged:

"AAFES Charcoal Lighter Fluid
32 Fl Oz
Meets S Coast Air Quality Mgt District Rule 74, Ref 395

Is this just white gas?  Or alcohol?"

"I do not know if you have received a response back yet, I am the chief chemist and was out last Friday afternoon.  To answer your question it is neither.  It is a petroleum distillate (like the white gas) but it has a higher flash point so it is classified as a combustible (white gas is a flammable/or very flammable).  It is closer to kerosene  or diesel fuel than white  gas."

Diesel generators are a whole lots more 'spensive than my favorite little gas genny.  A $79 try, however, would be cheaper than a $300 steam engine kit that only runs a tiny light bulb.  Then again, a steam engine kit would be rather more steampunk than our red generator.

It's img be a little out there... But perhaps an R/C glowplug engine would behave better with a fuel that's closer to diesel or kerosene.  Most of them seem to want some sort of nitro content in the fuel, how we'll it'll run without that is beyond me.  15-sigh percent blend of castor oil for lube.

Something like this one is rated at a max output of 1.4 HP, so it might be able to handle a small car alternator if you can MacGyver the rig together. Ask around n some R/C forums to see if there's the faintest hope of this working.

Bad new: there wasn't a manual included in the box or bolts for putting the handle on top.

I already changed the spark plug, but is there anything else I should do before firing this little thing up?

You are good to go.. fill it with gas (w/ 2 stroke oil) and let that sucker run, keep it under 500 watts for a couple of tanks to break it in properly.

I did some checking on my two stroke oil that I've got at the house and what I've got already for a lawnmower is one of those generic oil additives where you don't have to figure out the right amount of oil to mix.  Is there a particular two stroke oil that works better than the others for this little genny?

What's the worst that can happen?  It catches fire in the desert?  As long as I don't get electrocuted or the fuel spontaneously combusts in 130 degree heat, I'm ok.

Checking out Chinese diesels on Alibaba.com, looks like I can get a 3KW 240V diesel for $500, then run it on vegetable oil, maybe cut it w/ a little bit of lighter fluid.  It's not going to gum up @ an average temp of 95 degrees ambient.

I joined this forum because of this topic, but found it to be a pretty cool place, so I'm staying!     ;)

I just got one of these little gennys (the red one) on a clearance sale at my HF. Guess I found out why - it puts out too much: ~140V with no load and ~132-135V with a small electric drill running. The speed/idle adjustment does not seem to do anything, and when I look at it on the carb, there is spring sticking vertically out of the housing right next to it but with no end on it and it's not connected to anything. The manual diagram is less than useless - the carb is a blotchy blob with no detail whatsoever.

Does anyone know if the speed adjuster is directly connected to the throttle butterfly, or is it supposed to have that spring attached to it? Any suggestions on the output issue before I take it back?

Thanks for any help you can provide!    :)

The spring is the silver one sticking straight up behind the speed control. There is nothing on the end of it, no hook or anything, and it doesn't move when you move the speed control. Any ideas? Is it supposed to have a hook on it that attaches to the arm on the speed control?

I'm pretty sure that spring is just being used as a detent to hold the choke lever in either its closed or open positions. If so, there isn't supposed to be anything connected to the other side of it.

ETA: This thread should help you adjust the governor - It even has pitchures!

Here's a shot with the gas tank and plastic side cover removed. The red arrow points to the tip of the governor speed adjustment screw:

(Note: It's not actually necessary to remove the gas tank or plastic cover to adjust the screw).

Thanks, Skibane! I will see what I can do with it. I have the feeling it's gonna go back tomorrow evening, though...

Harbor Freight should donate a truck load of these to Oklahoma residents affected by the tornado.

That would be some seriously good Karma.

It's been awhile since I've ran mine, I think I will fire it up tomorrow just for the hell of it.

Local hf having a tent sale this weekend. I picked up a blue one that's new it was the floor model  but out of the box for $20 .  I've only got 5 days to try it out though cuz there is no warranty after that but for $20 I can prolly fix it. What's the diff with the blue vs red?  I need to find some of the oil/gas mixture fuel too. I also got a 10 gallon air compressor for $30 not a bad day overall.
