Greetings,

First, thank you all for your service!

My niece is attempting to find service records for her grandfather in WW1. So far, she found a draft registration card. She is not sure if he ended up being drafted, enlisted or was not involved. He has a very common name, which tends to bring up huge search results, but so far no luck. Did DD-214s even exist back then? Any tips on finding data from so long ago? Suggestions on where in the mil she could look? Thanks very much.

Regards, Jim

Use the below website, I used it to find my great uncle's Navy service records from WWII so his 2 surviving sisters could know more about his time in the service before they passed. He died in WWII, non combat death and they always wanted to know more about what happened. All I had when I went to the below website was his name, mother & father's name, and his date of birth. They took that information, few weeks later and their mandatory fee I had his service records in my hand. Granted, they did send me the wrong one the first time but quickly fixed situation and offered to refund me shipping for the person's they sent me cause I had to send it back.

If you have his draft card, should have enough pertinent information on it for you to gain his military records that are still on file. Granted, might take some more snooping to get enough but send as much information as you can and see what happens. You'll be pleasantly surprised. Just note, they did lose some records in a fire that occurred in 1973, but that may not even affect you.
